Western Digital is back with a new second-generation WD Black Gaming SSD, and it is promising some high-end NVMe PCIe performance for gamers at price points that won't break the bank. As with the previous generation, the new WD Black SN750 is a completely in-house design using Western Digital's 64-bit TLC 3D NAND, firmware and SSD controller.

The WD Black SN750 family is available in 4 storage capacities: 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. Although it doesn't sit at the top of the family, the 1TB model is actually the fastest SKU across the board. It makes uses of 256Gb NAND dies versus 512Gb for the 2TB SKU (so that it can remain a single-sided design). The differences between the two in performance aren't earth shattering, but gamers that want to eke out every bit of performance should keep this in mind.

With that said, the 1TB model delivers sequential reads/writes of 3470MB/sec and 3000MB/sec respectively. Likewise, random reads/writes come in at 515K IOPS and 560K IOPS respectively.

In addition, Western Digital says that it has added a new Gaming Mode to its SSD Dashboard, which allows gamers to disable features like low power mode to ensure that the SSD is constantly running at peak performance for extended periods of time.

When it comes to availability, Western Digital says that the 250GB, 500GB and 1TB SKUs will be available later this month (Newegg is currently taking preorders). Western Digital says that the 2TB model will begin shipping this Spring along with additional SKUs that incorporate an EKWB-designed heatsink to enable longer sustained performance.

The 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB WD Black SN750 SSDs (non-heatsink) are priced at $79.99, $129.99, $249.99 and $499.99 respectively. At this time, pricing has not been announced for SKUs with the preinstalled EKWB heatsink.
