What's After Marshmallow? Google Considers Online Survey For Next Android Dessert Name
You have to hand it to Google, the search giant has done a great job plugging itself into pop culture and has a sense of humor to boot. One example is Android. More specifically, Android's naming scheme, which goes in alphabetical order and is always representative of a tasty treat, the newest being Marshmallow.
It started with Cupcake, then there was Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and Kit Kat, the sole sugary treat that was part of a promotional tie in with Nestlé and The Hershey Company. That led many to wonder if Google would follow suit with Android M, though as we now know, KitKat was a one-off play with a candy company. Nevertheless, the tradition is alive and it's a fun one.
So, what can we expect for the next version of Android? We know it will be something delicious and we know it will start with the letter "N" but beyond that, it's anyone's guess. It could also be left up to vote.
While speaking at Delhi University's Sri Ram College of Commerce, Google CEO Sundar Pichai talked about a number of topics, including Android N. Someone via video playfully asked why none of the prior versions of Android have been named after Indian sweets.
"Maybe what I'll do next time is when we're working on the next release of Android, Android N, maybe we'll do an online poll on what the name should be. And if all Indians vote, I think we can make it happen!," Pichai said.
That's not a bad idea, especially if Google weeds out the ridiculous and/or inappropriate suggestions and picks a handful to vote from.
