Will the iPhone 5 Sport a Dual-core Processor? Bank on It
Apple all but confirmed the iPhone 5 will run the same dual-core A5 processor as found in the iPad. Not intentionally, mind you, but the so-called proof lies in the iOS 4.3 code. It gets just a tad confusing, but follow along and we'll help you make heads or tails of what has everyone convinced of the iPhone 5's hardware.
In sifting through the iOS 4.3 code, iOS developer Filippo Bigarella noticed an entry for "N94AP." Based on some of the past code names Apple has used, it's pretty clear this one refers to the iPhone 5. The reason this is important is because the N94AP device is listed as having the same S5L8940 processor as the iPad 2, which is a dual-core A5 chip.

Short of an official announcement from Apple, this is about as much proof as we're ever going to get, though it seems like a no-brainer to us. There's already at least one dual-core equipped smartphone on the market, and you can bet several more are in the pipeline, including those utilizing processors from Samsung and Qualcomm. The only real concern is battery life, but with the iPad 2, Apple claims the same 10-hour run time as the iPad 1, so apparently Steve Jobs and Co. figured out how to best make use of a dual-core chip without straining the battery.
