Microsoft Internal Docs Show Windows 10 Activations Continue Rapid Expansion To 825 Million Devices

Windows is the most popular PC operating system on the planet today with more machines running it than any other OS, by a long shot. In March, we learned that Windows 10 had been installed 800 million times making it the fastest growing version of Windows ever. 

An internal document seen by Thurrott claims that Windows 10 is now active on over 825 million devices globally. That is a significant gain in only a few months since the last announcement, and it's interesting that Microsoft didn't take the time to brag on that number at Build. The software giant has also been changing things up behinds the scenes and has filled a key leadership role that had been vacant since 2018 when Terry Myerson left the company.

To fill that vacant spot as the corporate VP of Windows and Education, Microsoft has promoted Eran Megiddo. The new VP will report to Joe Belfiore, the head of Microsoft Essential Products team known as EPIC internally and part of the Microsoft 365 organization that is responsible for Windows 10 apps, Microsoft Edge, OneNote, and Android/iOS mobile experiences.

Megiddo will reportedly be part of the Windows leadership team but not part of the Microsoft senior leadership team. Some interesting statistics about the EPIC team's success so far have turned up. The Windows 10 mobile apps they create have been downloaded 32 million times.

Other interesting tidbits include that fact that there have been 4.5 million downloads of the mobile version of Microsoft Edge so far, which is a pleasant surprise. Microsoft Launcher has racked up over 4 million monthly active users, and SwiftKey has over 159 million active users. Microsoft is also reportedly working on a new app called Microsoft Family, but it's not clear what that app will do.
