Windows 10 Build 10074 Brings Aero Glass, New Sounds, And Cortana Updates

A mere week after Microsoft rolled out build 10061 of its Windows 10 Preview comes a brand-new one: 10074. This build is a bit special in that it's the first in a while to be delivered to those on the "Slow" ring - so if you're currently running an earlier Windows 10 build, you should expect the 10074 update to come through shortly.

While 10074 becomes available not long after Microsoft announced the final name of Project Spartan, Microsoft Edge, the change is not reflected in this build. It seems likely that the next build would take care of that, unless there are simply no other updates to the browser during that time (which seems unlikely).

At the forefront, 10074 brings with it a slew of user experience enhancements, and some might only be noticeable if you actually use the OS. Microsoft does note that it's improved the performance and stability of Live Tiles, and it's also improved how the OS handles high or different (per monitor) DPIs.

Here's something that might pique a lot of interest: "We’ve also heard loud in clear that many Windows Insiders want to see Aero Glass from Windows 7 make a comeback." You know what this means: Microsoft will roll out Aero-like effects to all of Windows 10 if people want it. Unfortunately, the effect isn't guaranteed in your install - only 50% of people will see it. I personally don't see it when using the OS inside of a virtual machine, as seen below. Even without a frosted look, the transparency adds a lot to the look and feel.

One minor addition that could please many is that the default sounds in the OS have been changed - finally. As with most things with the preview, if you love or hate the new sounds, be sure to submit feedback.

Cortana has also received a big update, and is now able to respond to a variety of new questions. Examples given include "MSFT Stock", "Seattle Weather", "UA 238" (flight status), "time in London", and "tell me a joke".

Other improvements include updates to Continuum, multi-tasking, select apps (Xbox, Music, Video, Store), as well as an optional mechanism that can recommend certain apps to you. There's no doubt at all that Microsoft really wants you to dive into 'Modern' apps.
