Windows 10 Build 17035 Redstone 4 Branch Previews Next Major Windows Release

Microsoft pushed the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update out the door last month, and is well along in the development process for the next major release of Windows 10. This upcoming release is part of the Redstone 4 development branch, and Microsoft has just sent out a new build to Windows Insiders on the Fast ring: Windows 10 Build 17035.

This new build brings an oft-requested feature to the Microsoft Edge browser: the ability to mute individual tabs that may be playing [annoying] audio. You can simply click on the audio icon to mute a tab in question; clicking it again will restore audio. The option can also be brought up by right clicking on a tab and clicking on "Mute tab".

Build 17035 also brings a new feature called "Near Share", which allows you to quickly share files and URLs with someone wirelessly -- as long as they're in close proximity, hence the name. Near Share can be invoked from Action Center, and uses Bluetooth to initiate and complete the wireless file transfer.

To send a file, find the Share icon, right click on a file and click Share.  A list of nearby PCs available via Bluetooth will be presented. You can then initiate the transfer, which will begin once the other party accepts. In practice, this sounds a lot like Apple AirDrop functionality that is available with macOS and iOS devices.

The touch keyboard has now been upgraded with an acrylic background, text insertion is now more streamlined within the handwriting panel, and a new "split" gesture allows you to increase the amount of space between words when inking.

While it may be annoying for some, Microsoft is introducing text suggestions when using a hardware keyboard. "You can see three text suggestions near caret while typing and choose candidates in text suggestions if you find a word you want to insert," writes Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc. "Set focus to the first suggestion by tapping the up arrow key on your keyboard and using the left/right arrow keys to change focus. To select the desired candidate, tap space or enter."

While there are a lot of small additions here and there with Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17035, it will not work on PCs with AMD processors. Microsoft says that an issue is present in this build that makes AMD processors bug check during the upgrade process. Until Microsoft can figure out a way around this bug, Build 17035 will strictly be an Intel-only affair.
