Windows 10 May 2019 Update Hits Release Preview, Here's How To Grab It Now
The company doesn't want to make the same mistake with its latest release -- the Windows 10 May 2019 Update -- and has taken many precautions to make sure that its customers don't go through upgrade hell. As a result, Microsoft is pushing the May 2019 Update (Build 18362.30) to the Release Preview ring much earlier than usual. This should give Windows Insiders enough time to properly vet the software and make sure that there are no show-stopping bugs that could cause problems for the larger Windows 10 collective.
If you'd like to be among the first to try out the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, and are already a Windows Insider, you'll first need to verify your existing Windows Insider Program settings. You'll want to navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program.
From here, you'll be able to select if you want to get on the Skip Ahead, Fast, Slow or Release Preview rings. The Release Preview ring will allow you to get the May 2018 Update almost immediately, while the those on the Slow Ring will eventually get update after Microsoft has deemed its safe for a broader rollout. With the Fast and Skip Ahead rings merging (as we previously reported), those testers will instead be seeded early builds of the Windows 10 20H1 Update.
For those that haven't already joined the Windows Insider Program, you can do so with the following steps:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and click “Get started”.
- Link your Microsoft account or Azure Active Directory account.
- Choose “Just fixes, apps, and drivers” to join the Release Preview ring.
- Press “Restart Now”.
- After rebooting, check your Windows Insider Program settings via Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and make sure it shows “Release Preview” under “What pace do you want to get new builds?”.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and press the “Check for updates” to receive the May 2019 Update.
While most of the major bugs should have been worked out with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update at this point, don't be surprised if you do encounter a few minor issues here and there.
