Windows 10 Mobile RTM Coming To Legacy Lumias In February At The Earliest

Microsoft already lifted the curtain to reveal Windows 10 Mobile when its Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL handsets launched to retail, but for legacy Lumia device owners, the waiting game is still being played out. For how long? If going by Vodafone Australia's time frame, Windows 10 Mobile won't roll out to older handsets until at least February of next year, if not longer.

Vodaphone posted an updated chart detailing the statuses of new software versions for various handsets, including both Android and Windows 10 Mobile. For the latter, Vodafone lists five different Lumia phones -- Lumia 630, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 730, and Lumia 930, all of which will be getting Windows 10 Mobile.

The "Current Status" entry for each handset reads, "Awaiting final software for testing, expected mid Jan 2016." If assuming about three weeks of testing, then it looks like Windows 10 Mobile will arrive for select Lumia phones in early February. That also assumes that the final code reaches carriers when expected, and that subsequent testing goes well.

It's become a tedious wait for owners of older Lumia devices, though with so much riding on a successful roll out, Microsoft is understandably taking its time. Grumblings over an initial delay are preferable to a bad reputation based on a buggy release. Microsoft learned that lesson with Windows Vista on the desktop (it became a serviceable OS after SP1, but by then users were reluctant to upgrade from Windows XP).
