Microsoft Reimagines Windows 10 Tablet UI Experience, Cloud Restore With Latest 20H1 Build

Microsoft has launched a new Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18970 (20H1) to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring. This build brings a new tablet experience for 2-in-1 convertible PCs as a Beta to Windows insiders. The new experience is meant to allow tablet mode users to stay in their familiar desktop experience with no interruption, and brings some new features.

The new features include increased spacing between taskbar icons, the search box on the taskbar is collapsed into an icon, the file explorer switches to a touch-optimized layout, and the touch keyboard auto invokes when a text field is pressed. Microsoft also made some changes to the tablet section in Settings. Microsoft says these changes should happen automatically when the keyboard is removed or folded back.

Microsoft has introduced a new Reset this PC option using the cloud. The option allows users to download Windows or use a local reinstall. Previously, Reset this PC was only able to do a local reinstall and would build new a Windows installation from the existing Windows files. The recovery will remove apps that have been installed, and the "Remove everything" option deletes user data. Microsoft notes that the cloud download option is currently not working with optional features installed.

Insiders will also see a Cumulative Update Build 18970.1005 (KB4518974) available at the same time. Microsoft notes that it is testing its ability to service a build at the same time it is released, and the software giant notes that insiders should be on Build 18970.1005 after completing these updates. Before anyone jumps into installing the build on their computer, Microsoft has a warning. If users install this build, there may be bugs, and once this is installed if users want to move to the Slow ring or Release Preview rings, a clean install will be required.
