Xbox One August Update Arrives Bearing 1080p 60fps Game Streaming
The August Xbox update is here and it’s bring better streaming functionality for gamers who stream games from their Xbox Ones to PCs running Windows 10. The most notable upgrade is the new support for 1080p streaming at 60fps – if your own networking hardware can handle it, that is. The Xbox app for Window 10 also received an update.
“The fan feedback around game streaming has been incredible,” said Richard Irving from the Xbox engineering group in an interview with Major Nelson. “We’ve been working on a higher quality setting for game streaming. So now if you have the right network conditions you’re going to be able to stream at 1080p/60 frames per second from your Xbox One to the Xbox App.”
The key to high quality game streaming is going to be in the bandwidth that your home network offers. A wired network can handle the new streaming setting, but Irving says the right wireless network can also handle the increased data. “It’s a very bandwidth intensive setting, but if you do have the right network conditions it can work over wireless,” Irving said.
The new Very High setting appears in in the Xbox app on Windows 10, under Settings, Game Streaming. The update also brings a bunch of smaller features, including an easier way to message friends. Now, you can just right-click your friend’s name to send a message or invite them to a party. You’ll also have a new animated display that tracks player activity so you can see which if your friends have been playing a particular game recently.
Microsoft also added achievement comparison tools and updated the My Games interface to make browsing easier. You can also now manually add games to the collection. The Windows 10 Xbox app will update automatically to version 8.8.15003. You can verify that you have the latest update by looking in the General section of the app’s Settings area.
