Xiaomi Mi 5 Is Big On Price And Specs With Snapdragon 820, 4GB RAM, 5.2-inch QHD Display

Yesterday, we were treated to the Xiaomi Redmi 3, a mid-range smartphone that some pretty stellar specs with a $107 price tag attached. Today, we’re getting a first look at Xiaomi’s latest flagship which costs 6 times at much as the Redmi 3 — but do the specs warrant the significant jump in price? Well, you be the judge.

The Mi 5, which is set to be unveiled on January 20th, has been leaked by retailer GearBest. The specs aim to impress, as you’ll find a Qualcomm’s latest powerhouse SoC under the hood: the Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996) with 4GB of RAM. Display duties are said to be handled by a 5.2-inch QHD display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4. The Mi 5 can be had in 16GB or 64GB variants, although there is no mention of a microSD slot to further expand storage (as in the lesser Redmi 3).

Other specs of note include a 16MP rear camera with dual LED lash, 8MP front-facing camera, a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button, USB-C port, NFC, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual SIM capabilities. The unibody aluminum chassis will be available in white, black and gold, and a 3600 mAh battery powers the device (3600 mAh seems pretty unimpressive next to the 4100 mAh battery found in the Redmi 3).

If these specs turn out to in fact be accurate, the Mi 5 should have no trouble going head-to-head with Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S7 and other 2016 flagship smartphone refreshes from LG and HTC. And its rumored priced tag of $625 should put it right in the ballpark of other flagships in its class.
