Zelda And Super Mario Odyssey Take Virtual Reality Plunge With Nintendo Labo

Part of the success of the Nintendo Switch has been due to the popularity its first-party games. Now a few of these games will be available with in VR. Nintendo recently announced that Super Mario Odyssey and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be compatible with the upcoming Labo VR Kit.

Nintendo released its Labo line of products last spring, and the cardboard kits are meant to provide interactive build-and-play experiences. Overall, Labo products have been primarily regarded as a novelties or fun tools for primary education. However, it appears that Nintendo to take the Labo line to the next level. This past winter, Nintendo announced the Labo VR Kit. that allows users to build cardboard accessories for the Switch that turn it into a VR gaming platform. The kit will include “Toy-Con VR Goggles”.

Both Super Mario Odyssey and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will receive a free update that will provide VR support. Super Mario Odyssey will include three new mini games that take place in Cap Kingdom, Seaside Kingdom, and Luncheon Kingdom. Breath of the Wild will not be updated with any new content. Once the update is available, users will simply need to turn on their Toy-Con VR Goggles in the settings of the game. It is important to note that pre-rendered cutscenes in Breath of the Wild are not supported in VR.

It remains to be seen whether Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild will be just as beautiful and fun through the Labo VR Kit as they are on the Nintendo Switch. Many VR games have a reputation for being clunky. The Labo kits tend to be marketed towards children and the VR updates are being advertised as “family friendly”. Perhaps Nintendo hopes that this rather risky VR venture will expand its consumer base.
