Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Reported As Groundbreaking Blockbuster Gaming Fun For Nintendo Switch

Nintendo is taking a big risk with the Switch, a hybrid console that eschews a spec war with Microsoft's Xbox One S and Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro in favor of a versatile gaming experience, one that can be enjoyed in the traditional living room setting in front of the big screen TV, as well as on the go like any any other mobile handheld. Such a gamble needs a blockbuster hit, and it appears Nintendo has one in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Zelda is one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time. Link, the iconic main character, was introduced over three decades ago with the original Zelda title on the Famicom Disk System in Japan, and then the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the U.S. a year-and-a-half later. Then in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 marked the franchise's first foray into 3D gaming territory. It's been garnering positive reviews ever since.

Zelda Breath of the Wild

The newest entry in the series, Breath of the Wild, is no exception. Before we get to that, let's have a look at how well previous titles have been regarded, based on Metacritic ratings:
  • Ocarina of Time: 99
  • Majora's Mask: 95
  • Wind Waker: 96
  • Twilight Princess: 95
  • Skyward Sword: 93
To say Zelda is a beloved franchise is an understatement. More importantly for Nintendo, Breath of the Wild is yet another highly regarded entry with a Metacritic score of 98. That too might be an understatement, as professional praise for Breath of the Wild is in no short supply.

For example, GameSpot called it a "breathtaking masterpiece" and "the most impressive game Nintendo has ever created."  The latter seems to be the general consensus with The Telegraph describing the title as "one of the finest video games ever made" and Trusted Reviews writing, "If there's a better game out there than Breath of the Wild, I haven't played it."

Such high praise has to be welcome news for Nintendo, which is not is taking a gamble with the Switch's design but is dealing complaints of Joy-Con connection issues and stuck pixels. Having a game that is as well regarded as Breath of the Wild could give potential buyers who are on the fence a gentle nudge.

Breath of the Wild is available now for $60. It can be purchased on physical media or as a digital download, the latter of which requires 13.4GB of free space.
