ZTE Mimosa X Handset is Brimming with Nvidia Hardware
Nvidia and ZTE are both giddy as all get-out to unveil the latter's new Mimosa X, purportedly the world's first smartphone to incorporate both an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and the GPU maker's Icera modem, which comes fresh off of NVIDIA's acquisition of Icera in mid-2011.
"The ZTE Mimosa X is exciting for a few reasons," said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. "The Mimosa X marks the first time NVIDIA technology powers all the major processors in a single smartphone, and also the first time a premium mobile computing experience is coming to the mainstream smartphone market."
If you're reading this, you're likely already familiar with Tegra 2, which is a dual-core processor for mobile devices. As a refresher, Tegra 2 is based on ARM's Cortex A9 architecture. Reference specs dictate that it can be clocked up to 1.2GHz, has 1MB of L2 cache, and can support up to 1GB of DDR2-760 or LPDDR2-733.
The GPU portion sports eight cores, supports various APIs (OpenGL ES version 2.0, OpenVG 1.1, EGL 1.4), and is capable of encoding and decoding Full HD 1080p video. It's a powerhouse platform, albeit a generation behind NVIDIA's recently released Tegra 3 platform.
Getting back to ZTE's Mimosa X handset, details are fairly sparse though we're told it will ship with a 4.3-inch qHD screen (960x540), 4GB of internal storage (expandable to 32GB), 5MP rear-facing camera, a front-facing camera of some sort, and of course NVIDIA's Icera 450 HSPA+ modem. It will also come with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) installed from the get-go.
The Mimosa X will launch around the second quarter of 2012. No word yet on price.
