6 TB Hard Drive Round-Up: WD Red, WD Green, Seagate Enterprise
ATTO Disk Benchmark
ATTO is another "quick and dirty" type of disk benchmark that measures
transfer speeds across a specific volume length. It measures raw
transfer rates for both reads and writes and graphs them out in an
easily interpreted chart. We chose .5kb through 8192kb transfer sizes
and a queue depth of 6 over a total max volume length of 256MB. ATTO's
workloads are sequential in nature and measure raw bandwidth, rather
than I/O response time, access latency, etc. This test was performed on
blank, formatted drives with default NTFS partitions in Windows 8.1 x64.

The overall ATTO Disk Benchmark results are
interesting since we see the Seagate drive towering over its rivals, while the WD Red and Green run in lockstep throughout the test. On the write speed portion the Seagate is clearly the winner, trading blows with the speedy WD Velociraptor as the two are the only drives we've seen top 200MB/s on this benchmark. When it comes to read speeds the Seagate drive hovered over 200MB/s for the majority of the test, which is impressive for a 7,200rpm hard drive. The WD Red and Green drives performed admirably, humming along at about 180MB/s as well, so they are certainly not slouches by any measure.
