AMD Threadripper Pro 7000 Debut: 96-Core Zen 4 CPU Benchmarked

AMD Threadripper Pro 7000WX Workstations: Dell Precision 7875 And HP Z6 G5

During our briefings with AMD, we also had the good fortune to meet with a handful of partners that will be offering Threadripper Pro 7000WX-based workstations. Two of the workstations we got to experience up close and personal were the Dell Precision 7875 and HP Z6 G5...

We have a full review of the previous-gen Precision 7865 live if you’d like a deep-dive look at many of the Dell innovations in its high-end workstations. The new 7875 for Threadripper Pro 7000WX is slightly taller than the 7865, but the design language and overall setup are similar.

The chassis is compartmentalized with dedicated cooling for the expansion slots and storage, the processor and memory, and motherboard VRMs. As is typically the case with high-end workstations like these, Dell will be offering an array of configuration options, with all of AMD’s Threadripper Pro 7000 WX processors and various graphics cards.

We should also mention that a Dell Precision 7875 powered by the top-end Threadripper Pro 7995WX and a pair of NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada graphics cards is what we had available for benchmarking. The system also included 512GB of DDR5-4800 RAM in an 8-channel configuration to maximize bandwidth. The system was technically a pre-production model, but should be very close–if not identical–to what will ship to customers.

Unfortunately, since we were working with it remotely, we weren’t able to test actual power draw from the outlet or measure sound levels, but we did experience the system in person during our briefings. As we mentioned in our review of the previous-gen Precision 7865, Dell’s design is exceptionally quiet given the immense horsepower in the system.

Our ability to benchmark the Precision 7875 was enabled by the Dell Customer Solutions Center (CSC) We like to thank them for their assistance in making this review possible and for the flexibility to accommodate our schedule and software needs. Special thanks in particular to Bharat “B.P” Patel for his personal assistance in the CSC Lab with the particular Precision 7875 unit we tested. With his help, we were able to experiment with different BIOS settings and he facilitated the remote access of the system.

The HP Z6 G5 Threadripper Pro System

One of the other systems we got to see in person was HP’s new Z6 G5. As is the case with the Dell system, HP will be offering a myriad of Threadripper Pro 7000WX-based workstation configurations, with a variety of memory, storage, and graphics options, including 8-channel memory configs as well as both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs.

The Z6 G5 is not a completely new product line (there are other Z6 systems in HP’s line-up), but the G5 does feature a redesigned chassis that’s slightly smaller than HP’s previous top-end professional workstations, with external storage expansion slots incorporated into the middle of the chassis.

Moving the external storage slots to the middle of the chassis allowed HP to break up the display slot configuration on the motherboard. There are a pair of slots available at the top of the motherboard, and additional slots below, with the CPU and memory in between.

The Z6 G5 chassis is configured with many fans and multiple cooling zones, and there’s ventilation all around the chassis. Air is pulled in from the side panel and front of the system, and exhausted out the back from a large center-mounted fan and PSU.

We saw the Z6 G5 live and in-action, and it too was relatively tame acoustically considering the system was packing the flagship 96-core Threadripper Pro 7995WX and a thirsty Radeon Pro W7900. We didn’t, however, get to run any of our own tests on the system. That’ll have to wait for a full review, assuming we get one in house at some point.
