Performance Testing with Nero CD-DVD Speed



CD/DVD Read Performance Testing
The Basics

Throughout our testing of the DRW-1604P, we utilized Nero's CD/DVD Speed.  This is an exceptionally versatile tool that allows us to peer into the drive's behavior during various operations.  In the next section, we ran several read tests on the ASUS DRW-1604P and included results from a Plextor PX-712SA DVD +/- R/RW Drive for comparison where applicable.  Please note that in each test, the Green line represents Rotation Speed while the Yellow Line represents the drive's progress.  CD performance is viewed on a scale of 80 minutes and DVD in Gigabytes.

Nero CD-DVD Speed - CD Data Test:

With our first test we inserted a CD-R with a single 677MB AVI file and initiated the read test.

The DRW-1604P managed an average read speed of 31.66X, starting at 18.21X and peaking at 41.99X.  Note the DRW-1604P peaked 2X higher than its rated 40X read speeds using Constant Angular Velocity.  This means the drive rotated an increasing speed while maintaining a steady data flow.

Nero CD-DVD Speed - DVD Data Test:

In our next test we inserted a DVD+R full of MP3 files to test DVD data read rates.

The sliding scale looked very similar to the CD-R read test, with the drive maintaining data flow while increasing in speed steadily as the test progressed.  Here, the drive averaged 8.83X overall, starting at 5.23X and hitting a maximum11.86X using P-CAV.  P-CAV or Partial Constant Angular Velocity.  This means the drive will speed up to its maximum speed and then switch to CAV to maintain peak speed.
