ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q G-SYNC Gaming Monitor: IPS At 165Hz

Inspecting The ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q

We really liked the look of the last year’s ASUS ROG SWIFT. Thankfully, the company saw fit to keep a very similar – almost identical – aesthetic with this new model, though a few things have been updated to make the new ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q more user friendly. And it still looked pretty awesome in our opinion.

One of the nicest external features of the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q are its relatively thin bezels. The PG279Q’s bezels are only slightly more than 1/4 an inch or so around the top and sides, and about 1/2 an inch at the bottom, which also makes this monitor a perfect candidate for a multi-display NVIDIA Surround (or AMD Eyefinity) setup.

Except for a stylish ASUS logo centered at the bottom, and some lightly silk-screened labels on the left side, and adjacent to its controls, there are no unsightly features to detract from the display’s good looks.

The back side of the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q’s enclosure is also quite attractive. The angular enclosure has an aggressive look, and features a matte black finish with a diamond pattern texture at the top, which looks great in our opinion. At either side of the rear panel, there are long vents, which help keep the display’s internals cool by allowing air to circulate inside. And the stand has a built-in slot for easy cable management. To further aid in routing the cables attached to the display, ASUS angled all of the various connectors, in an inverted V shape. By configuring the connectors this way, the cables naturally point downward, at an angle, toward the cable management slot in the base.

The ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q’s stand has a ton to offer as well. The stand supports height, swivel, tilt, and pivot adjustments. The monitor’s height is adjustable up and down by about 4.7” (120mm), the display swivels 60 degrees to either side, it can tilt from +20 to -5 degrees, and it can pivot from portrait to landscape mode without any kind of disassembly required.

The base also features a built-in, lighted red ring which adds an aggressive aesthetic without being too over the top. Stamped into one corner of the base is the ASUS “Republic of Gamers” logo and badge and the angular design language present on the rear panel is employed here too. We should also mention that the base isn’t terribly heavy, though it is very sturdy. Even during an aggressive gaming session, with you and you buddies bouncing around the room, this monitor isn’t going to tip over.

The ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q also ships fully assembled, so there’s no need to mount the base yourself, or fuss with any tools, as can be the case with many other monitors.
asus PG279Q IO
IO on the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q consists of a full-sized DisplayPort 1.2 input, an HDMI 1.4 input, a power connector, a headphone jack, and three USB 3.0 ports—one upstream and two downstream. Though two display inputs isn’t a lot these days, it is an upgrade over previous generation G-SYNC displays, which feature only a single DisplayPort input. We should also note that the power supply is external, so a power-brick is included and only a thin power cable needs to be connected to the display itself. Under that rubber gasket at the right, there's also a multi-pin header, we assume for testing / qualification purposes and for tweaking the G-SYNC module, but that's not something end-users will be doing.
