Today, NVIDIA officially unveiled the nForce 2 core logic chipset.  This second generation of the nForce brings with it a host of new features that should make it a favorite amongst enthusiasts and OEMs.  The nForce 2 incorporates GeForce 4 MX level graphics, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 and dual Ethernet controllers.  The most important addition though is support for DDR400 memory through the use of an updated memory controller that NVIDIA states will give the nForce 2 a performance advantage over competing chipsets.

Jeff and I had a chance to see the nForce 2 live in meeting we had in New York with the folks from NVIDIA in late June.  We were not able to run any benchmarks, so we'll wait until we test final hardware before we comment on performance, but seeing this level of integration, at the price points NVIDIA mentioned was impressive.  We were told some basic nForce 2 motherboards will be sold for prices lower than $70 US!  I'm sure we'll see loaded, higher-priced boards from some OEMs, but getting GF4MX level graphics and DDR400 support from a mobo that inexpensive is awesome.  We're told reference boards should hit reviewers soon, so stay tuned.
