Nyrius Aries Pro Wireless HDMI Kit Review: Low Latency Cord Cutting

The number of “cord cutters” has accelerated over the last decade. Many people are cutting their ties to cable companies TV programming packages, and instead looking for online entertainment solutions. In that regard, consumers have been turning to streaming devices like Google Chromecast, Roku and NVIDIA Shield TV.

However, HDMI wireless transmitters and receivers are another viable option for cord cutters. Wireless transmit/receive video products like these can be used for much more than streaming your favorite shows, including everything from gaming to office presentations and live drone footage. The Nyrius Aries Pro is one of the latest offerings in the market for wireless video transmission and it promises almost zero lag.


Nyrius was founded in 2003 and concentrates on connectivity products. The company originally released media fusion docks, wireless Bluetooth audio transmitters, and smart home products. Nyrius is now particularly focused on wireless HDMI and other video transmitters, receivers, and A/V accessories.

Nyrius promises that their Aries Pro allows users to “eliminate constraining cables to give you full freedom in the living room, office, in the sky, and on filming locations.” They insist that users will be able to stream movies and television shows to their preferred display, enjoy wireless gaming, easily display presentations in boardrooms, and stream video from drones and other cameras without perceptible latency or a loss in quality.

The Aries Pro bundled kit includes a transmitter, a receiver, a power adapter, a 5-foot HDMI cable, USB power cable, and right angle adapter. The transmitter measures 3.4 x 1.3 inches (roughly 8.6 X 3.3 centimeters). It can be connected to any laptop, desktop, or other device with an HDMI port. The receiver measures 3.7 x 3.8 x 1.1 inches (roughly 9.4 X 9.7 X 2.8 centimeters). It can connect to essentially any high definition display with an HDMI port. The receiver can be mounted on a wall and Nyrius provides the users with two screws for this purpose. Users will need to press the power button to put the receiver to “sleep”, but they will not need to press the button to turn it on. And with that in mind, it's worth noting that Nyrius does not provide or offer a remote for this device. The solution is sort of a set it and forget it type of device, but this is something to consider none-the-less, depending on your use case.

The Aries Pro supports video resolutions up to 1080p Full HD along with uncompressed 7.1 PCM, Dolby DTS, and Dolby Digital Surround Sound audio. In terms of wireless frequency, the Aries Pro uses the 5GHz band for transmission employing GigaXtreme Technology. The wireless signal has a bandwidth of 40 MHz, the same as 802.11n. The Aries Pro does not use a WiFi network, however, as it makes its own connection peer-to-peer.

The Aries Pro should be placed in a ventilated space. Nyrius claims that the Aries Pro can withstand temperatures up to 176 °F (80 °C) and should be placed in an area that does not exceed 86 °F (30 °C). They state that it will typically operate at 140 °F (60 °C). We found this to be relatively accurate, as measured with our infrared thermometer. However, this is still quite a high temperature. Caution should be exercised when touching the Aries Pro transmitter after prolonged use.
