Toshiba OCZ VX500 SATA SSD Review: Fast, Affordable Storage

Next we ran SiSoft SANDRA 2014, the the System ANalyzer, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant. Here, we used the File System test suite and provide the results from our comparison SSDs. The benchmarks were run on fully formatted drives, with software RAID 0 configured on the DC P3608. Read and write performance metrics are detailed below.

The OCZ VX500 series drives technically finish in the middle of the pack here, but the deltas separating the drives are quite small. Reads are pushing the real-world limits of the SATA interface, and writes aren't too far behind.

ATTO is another "quick and dirty" type of disk benchmark that measures transfer speeds across a specific volume length. It measures raw transfer rates for both reads and writes and graphs them out in an easily interpreted chart. We chose .5KB through 64MB transfer sizes and a queue depth of 6 over a total max volume length of 256MB. ATTO's workloads are sequential in nature and measure raw bandwidth, rather than I/O response time, access latency, etc.

The two VX500 series drives we tested tracked very closely in the ATTO Disk Benchmark. Performance was relatively strong and all of the drives were tightly grouped once the transfer size hit 64K. At the lower transfer sizes, however, the VX500s trailed the Trion 150 and Samsung drives in the write test. Only the Samsung drive was better in the read test, however.
