Samsung Galaxy Tab S4: System Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 sports an octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB of system memory. The new processor gives it an additional four cores compared to its predecessor, but the allotted memory stays the same. Even though Samsung chose to stay with only 4GB of memory, we should still see a decent boost in performance, thanks to those additional processor cores.

If we are strictly looking at the performance difference between the Galaxy Tab S3 and S4, there's roughly a 20% performance increase in both tests. Versus other mobile devices with more powerful SoCs, however, the Tab S4 doesn't fare quite as well.

Futuremark's PCMark for Android is a new benchmark addition here for us, so we have fewer results in our database of tested tablets to show you. However, this is an excellent suite of tests that we recommend for benchmarking performance of a tablet with heavier-duty tasks for things like image and video editing, as well as lighter-duty workloads like email, and web browsing. When you see the test running live it's clear its scripted application tests are carefully selected and tuned to make use of the platforms involved in a very controlled way.

Just like what we saw in the two previous benchmark, the Galaxy Tab S4 is performing roughly 20% faster than the Galaxy tab S3. We would have liked to have seen a little bit more of a performance boost from those four additional cores. However, much like a PC, not all software is able to utilize all the available cores -- doubling the cores, won't always improve performance.
