SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Review: Compact, Rugged USB-C External Storage

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD: Our Summary and Conclusion

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is compact and portable enough to replace pokey USB thumb drives, but with high enough capacity to replace old-school hard drives in your bag as well. Its rugged exterior will survive being knocked around or endure a sudden rainstorm. Plus, since it uses USB-C, it's compatible with newer computers while retaining USB Type-A compatibility for older PCs and Macs thanks to the included adapter.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD's street price is about $260 ($0.26 per GiB) for the 1TB version we tested here, an improvement in both capacity and value over the 540GB Extreme 510 ($135, $0.28 per GiB). It makes even more sense to buy the newer model when you consider its USB-C compatibility and cleaner design.

The only minor nit-pick we have with the device is that the included USB-C-to-USB-Type-A adapter is small and easy to lose, so we would welcome it if SanDisk attached it to the cable with a tether of some sort.

Overall though, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD comes highly recommended. It provides speedy storage in a durable, compact container and is quite handy for the traveling photographer, videographer, or anyone that needs easy access to lots of data on the road.
