If one thing is for sure, recent home TV and movies services market changes have been seismic. Over the years we have gone through Beta, VHS, laser discs, DVDs, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, but nothing has reshaped the home entertainment landscape like streaming video. Each time a new form factor for delivering movies in the home launches, the old form factors have eventually gone extinct and it appears that Blu-ray may be the next format to die off. Samsung has announced that it is not going to produce any new Blu-ray players for the U.S. market. Samsung announced that no new 1080p or 4K Blu-ray players would be produced for the U.S. and the new announcement gives more detail than an earlier statement by... Read more...

At long last, the Radeon VII is here, it has been reviewed and benchmarked (be sure to check out our own hands-on analysis), and it is now up to consumers to pull the trigger or take a pass. One of the selling points is that the Radeon VII has 16GB of HBM2 memory. Is it overkill? Not according to AMD, which believes the generous allocation of memory gives the card some future proofing. Of course, honest-to-goodness future proofing is unattainable. That's not the point, however. AMD decided to design and build a card that is simultaneously attractive to gamers and professionals alike, and is pitching the excess memory (compared to 8GB cards) giving the Radeon VII some legs. "This new GPU is meant... Read more...

We've got some excellent news for you today if you're heavily invested in Google Play with respect to movie purchases. Google announced that it is upgrading your previously purchased movies -- whether they were purchased in standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD) -- to 4K resolution. This is being done automatically and completely free of charge. This is a great move on Google's part, as 4K has pretty much become the standard for big screen televisions sold today, and anytime the word "free" is thrown around, it gets our attention. Google says that when you open the Play Movies & TV app, it will alert you to which titles have been upgraded to 4K.  We have to caution,... Read more...
Here's my bold, and maybe biased prediction: Red Sox are going to the World Series, Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl, Celtics are a lock for the NBA Finals, and the Bruins will compete for the Stanley Cup. It comes with a Voice Remote with... Read more...
Sony has announced a new digital camera that it claims to be the world's smallest compact camera with a 24-720mm zoom lens: the Cyber-shot HX99 (DSC-HX99). The small size of the camera makes it well suited for travel, yet the high zoom rate allows you to get closer to far away subjects. The lens is a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T 24-720mm High Magnification Zoom lens with Optical SteadyShot integrated. Image stabilization is important at high zoom levels, or you end up with close up, blurry images. Sony integrates a Zoom Assist function that makes it easier to zoom accurately and keep distant subjects in the frame by temporarily zooming-out to show the shooter a wider area. A BIONZ X processing engine... Read more...
It might be taking content developers a long time to flood the market with 4K movies and TV shows, but one thing is for sure, the hardware is in place on the consumer side. TVs with native 4K support are the new norm, and the transition is taking place on the peripheral side as well. Case in point, Amazon today announced a new version of its streaming Fire TV Stick that brings 4K resolution support into the fold. It doesn't stop there, either. Amazon's new Fire TV Stick 4K adds support for the two most popular high dynamic range (HDR) standards, those being Dolby Vision and HDR10+, to make those 4K Ultra HD visuals pop. Of course, you'll need a TV that also supports HDR, which are also starting... Read more...
LG is getting ready to release a 31.5-inch FreeSync monitor with a 4K resolution, HDR support, and high color fidelity for what we hope will be a relatively affordable price. While the MSRP has yet to be announced, word on the web is that it will cost around 55,000 yen, which is a little over $480 in US currency. According to the monitor's product listing on LG's website in Japan, the new monitor sports a VA panel boasting 95 percent coverage of the DCI-P color space. It has a rated response time of 4ms (GTG), a 60Hz refresh rate, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, and 178-degree viewing angles (horizontal and vertical). For the most part, this looks to be a higher end display. Where it seemingly falters,... Read more...
At this point, there is a lot of information out there about NVIDIA's next-generation GeForce RTX graphics cards, including details on pricing and availability, and a deep dive into the underlying Turing architecture. All that is really left to know is what kind of performance the new cards will deliver. Reviewers are under embargo at the moment, though a set of leaked results for Final Fantasy XV provide a glimpse of how the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti compares to previous generation cards. What makes this leak data somewhat unique is that the results appear in Square Enix's official Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition database, rather than some random website or web forum. That doesn't mean there isn't... Read more...
Lenovo is expanding its ThinkPad X1 family with the arrival of an even larger form-factor. As you might expect for a modern notebook, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is available with 8th generation Intel Core processors. Sitting at the top of the range will be the Core i9 complete with six physical cores and 12 threads, while RAM tops out at 64GB. The storage... Read more...
DJI may be the king when it comes to consumer aerial drones, but Yuneec is looking to give customers plenty of bang for the buck with its all-new Mantis Q. The Mantis Q seems to hit all the right notes for a consumer drone and appears to compare favorably to the $799 DJI Mavic Air. For starters, the Mantis Q has 4K video recording capabilities (4K30) or it can shoot 1008p video at up to 60fps. The camera features a 1/3.06-inch CMOS sensor and incorporates 3-axis stabilization. However, it appears that the camera can only tilt up (20 degrees) or down (90 degrees), putting it on par with entry-level drones like the DJI Spark.  The drone's four arms independently fold up against the... It is really happening, folks. NVIDIA is just days away from announcing a new generation of graphics cards for gamers, presumably based on its recently unveiled Turing architecture. If the leaks and hints to this point prove true, NVIDIA will roll out a GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card with ray-tracing capabilities, and beefy specs for glorious 4K resolution gaming. At this point, we pretty much know NVIDIA's next gaming card will be called the GeForce RTX 2080. NVIDIA dropped some strong hints of this in a recent teaser video. And if that is the case, then ray-tracing will figure prominently in its release, at least from a marketing standpoint, just as it is a point of focus with NVIDIA's new... Read more...

When the first 4K TVs hit the market, their high price and dearth of worthwhile content made them a tough sell. But before long, 4K TVs became much more affordable, to the point today where there's little reason not to consider one if you're looking to upgrade. TCL's 55R617 unit is a perfect example of how the incredible value found in today's TVs. At $649.50 (as of the time of writing), this 55-inch television supports both HDR10 and DolbyHDR formats with the DCI-P3 color profile, so that you can enjoy current or remastered HDR-supported content with much richer color than typical sets can provide. Acer is rolling out a new 4K Ultra HD monitor for graphics designers and other professionals who need pinpoint color accuracy and lots of brightness for their projects. This is not the first HDR monitor to boast a 1,000 nits brightness rating, though such animals are comparatively rare in the wild—the vast majority of HDR displays top out in the 400-450 nits range. In addition to the impressive brightness, Acer claims the ProDesigner BM270 is pre-tuned and tested to ensure Delta E<1... Read more...
