If you own an Acer laptop powered by a GeForce RTX 30 series GPU, we have good news to share. A free performance boost is potentially coming your way. It depends on which specific model you own, but by way of a whole bunch of firmware updates, Acer is bumping up the total graphics power (TGP) threshold by as much as 30W. When it comes to gaming laptops, the GPU is the most important component. In most cases, it is also not a part that can be upgraded, so it is sound advice to go with the most powerful GPU you can afford, since you are stuck with it for the life of the laptop (barring an external graphics enclosure). Components like the RAM and storage can be upgraded or replaced in a lot of models,... Read more...

Following up on Intel's recent expansion to its mobile 11th Gen Core CPU lineup, Acer has come out with some upgraded gaming laptops that pair the chips with NVIDIA's latest generation GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs (also in mobile form, naturally). They include the stylish Predator Triton 500 Special Edition shown above, and a more aggressive looking Helios 500. Starting with the Predator Triton 500 SE, it is aimed at consumers who want a laptop for both play and work, hence the toned down design language for a Predator product. It packs plenty of firepower though—fully loaded, this thing can wield a Core i9 processor, GeForce RTX 3080 GPU, 64GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, and 4TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD storage,... Read more...
Acer has quietly rolled out what appears to be the world's fastest gaming monitor, the Nitro XV252QF with a whiplash-inducing 390Hz refresh rate. While for whatever reason Acer is not shouting about this from a mountaintop, these things never go unnoticed—it would be like your neighbor trying to nonchalantly sneak a Lamborghini into their driveway. You're going to see it. There have been a few monitors to land with an almost equally insane 360Hz refresh rate, like the ASUS ROG Swift PG259QN, but Acer has apparently decided to get a step further because hey, why not? That said, this is almost definitely built around a 360Hz panel that has been overclocked to 390Hz. Other than the refresh... Read more...

Earlier in the month, brewer Molson Coors was allegedly hit by a ransomware attack under the guise of a “cybersecurity incident.” Now, Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer has reportedly been hit by a REvil ransomware gang attack, and the hackers are demanding the largest known ransom to-date. The ransomware gang announced earlier this week that it breached Acer and had taken files. On the REvil website, called the ‘Happy Blog’, these stolen files -- including financial spreadsheets, bank balances, and bank communications -- were posted as supposed proof of the breach. In response to the rumored attack, Acer has only reported “abnormal situations observed”... Read more...

There's no question that we're getting close to the launch of AMD's Ryzen 5000 Series mobile processors and the upcoming GeForce RTX 30 Series Mobile GPUs. Both product families have been leaking frequently in recent weeks, with the most recent leak coming today with the Acer Nitro 5 AN517. This version of the Nitro 5 (AN517-41-R9S5) features a 144Hz 17.3-inch IPS display (matte) with a resolution of 1920x1080. Powering that display is a mobile version of the incredibly potent NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080. That GPU is a 4K graphics monster, and should have no trouble pushing pixels with ray tracing enabled at the panel's default resolution. The GeForce RTX 3080 is listed with just 8GB of memory versus... Read more...
It feels like Black Friday deals started somewhere in late October, but the day after Thanksgiving is finally upon us. Hopefully you've had some leftover pumpkin pie for breakfast and maybe a cup of coffee, because now it's time to shop. On the desktop, AMD's Ryzen 5000 family is quite remarkable. These CPUs thump anything available from Intel in the single-threaded performance department. Not only that, they also bring the multi-threaded hurt on loads that can handle it. All around, they have amazing performance at attractive prices. The only thing that's missing is Ryzen 5000 in notebooks. Now, some mobile Ryzen machines are starting to peek their heads out of hiding.  AMD's newest, still unannounced CPUs will apparently make their way into Acer's Aspire 5 family of notebooks. According to this listing on Amazon's Italian website, the Aspire A515-45-R2J2 notebook will have a Ryzen 7 5700U, 8 GB of DDR4 memory, and... Read more...
It has been a long time since the monitor market was a stale one. These days, it is one of the most frequently updated categories, with new models arriving all the time sporting faster speeds and a barrage of fancy features. So it is not surprising that among the products Acer announced today, there are half a dozen new displays, including four that fall under its Predator branding and two that carry the Nitro designation. What you see above is the fastest of the bunch, Acer's new Predator XB253Q GW. It sports an IPS screen with a 1920x1080 resolution that users can overclock to 280GHz (there is no mention of the stock refresh rate, but I'm guessing it is 240Hz, with up to a 0.5ms gray-to-gray... Over the summer, Intel announced its 11th generation Tiger Lake processors, which power the latest thin and light notebooks from various OEMs. In addition to bringing faster overall CPU performance compared to the preceding 10th generation Ice Lake processors, Tiger Lake also introduced the world to 12th generation Iris Xe integrated graphics (which offers a significant uptick in GPU performance). Keeping that in mind, Acer has announced a first with its new Swift 3X laptop. At first glance, the Swift 3X doesn't seem to be that remarkable of a machine. It's available with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 or Core i7-1165G7 processor, up to 16GB of LPDDR4X memory, up to a 1TB SSD, and... Read more...

This 28” 4K IPS display is packed with features and specifications such as AMD FreeSync, an HDR600 rating, 1ms response times, and 144Hz refresh rates. Moving up to the monitor, it is an all-black design with angular lines with some vents on the rear. Also on the rear, you will find I/O which includes HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 as well as a USB 3.0 hub.  As far as monitor movement goes, you will be able to rotate... Read more...
Qualcomm first announced its Snapdragon 8cx Compute Platform way back in December 2018, which was designed to deliver PC-class performance to ultraportable Windows 10 laptops with the power-sipping credentials that Arm-based chips are known for. Since that time, we’ve seen a handful of devices that have embraced the Snapdragon 8cx including the Samsung Galaxy Book S and the Surface Pro X (which uses a slightly modified version of the SoC called the Microsoft SQ1).  Now, Qualcomm is ready to deliver the next evolution in its PC-centric endeavors with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G Compute Platform. On the surface, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G doesn’t seem to offer... Read more...

The refresh rate wars are getting to be insane these days with gaming monitors, and Acer is throwing its hat into the ring again with its new Predator X25. As its name implies, the monitor measures 25 inches diagonally, but its claim to fame is no doubt the dizzying 360Hz refresh rate. 360Hz is absolutely bonkers, especially when you consider that most gamers would be wholly satisfied with a 240Hz or even 144Hz gaming monitor. But for those eSports gamers that want every possible advantage over the competition with their twitchy reflexes, this just might be the ticket. In addition to its insane refresh rate, the Predator X25 features a 1080p resolution, which again is ideal for eSports gaming,... Read more...
