Rivet Networks is adding another "world's first" trophy to its showcase with the launch of the Killer E3000. The company claims that this is the first Ethernet controller capable of delivering 2.5 Gbps data speeds for PCs. The Killer E3000 is primarily aimed at enthusiasts, which is why you will see it installed in monster gaming rigs like the Alienware Area-51m that was announced this week at CES. With that being said, Rivet Networks says that the 2.5 Gbps controller will be available in desktop and laptop systems along with motherboards from top component makers. The Killer E3000 takes advantage of Killer Advanced Stream Detect technology, which will automatically identify and prioritize... Read more...
Acer announced that its upcoming Predator Triton 500 and Predator Triton 900 gaming laptops will come equipped with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX graphics processors. In addition to the high-end hardware, these systems both have special features that help them to stand out from the competition. We got our first look at the Acer Predator Triton 900 last year, which features a unique convertible design. The notebook's 17.3" 4K IPS display uses a specialized CNC-machined Ezel Aero hinge that connects to the center of the display on its left and right sides. The display can be set just like a normal PC, or it can be rotated and set into tablet mode. "We are pushing the envelope on what a gaming notebook can... Read more...
In an attempt to get the jump on the competition, Acer today announced two new lightweight consumer oriented laptops. The more interesting of these two systems is Acer's new Chromebook 315, which the company said is the first to feature an A-Series AMD processor with Radeon graphics. Acer's Chromebook 315 will be available with either an AMD A4-9120C or a more powerful AMD A6-9220C. These new CPUs are both based on AMD's 8th generation Excavator microarchitecture. These processors are largely similar to their A4-9120 and A6-9220 counterparts, but feature a TDP of 6 watts instead of 15 watts along with tweaked CPU and GPU speeds. The Chromebook 315 will ship with either a 1366x768 or 1080p 15.6"... Read more...
When Acer debuted its Predator Helios 300 laptop line a little over a year ago, it quickly garnered praise for delivering an unexpected level of gaming performance for the price. At the time, the Predator Helios 300 came equipped with an assortment of hardware that could typically be found only on more expensive laptops. As such, we've had multiple requests to get our hands on one of the newer models and give it a full review. Well, for those who asked (and those who didn't), that's exactly what we're doing here. This past summer, Acer refreshed its Predator Helios 300 with an upgraded display supporting a 144Hz refresh rate, Intel 8th generation Core processor options, and faster storage. It... Read more...
There's a wide range of ultra-premium laptops on the market at the moment. However, many of them are simply out of reach for the average mainstream consumer due to budget constraints. There are more budget friendly options though, such as the Acer Swift 3 we are looking at today. The base model in the series starts at a thrifty $650 USD, and that gets you an Intel 8th Gen Core i5-8250U processor, a 14-inch FHD display, and a 256GB SSD. Along with that premium hardware, the exterior also features a sleek brushed aluminum chassis and its display sports relatively thin bezels.  The model we were sent to evaluate, however, doesn't sit at the top of the Swift 3 stack. Although, it does have some... Read more...
We love high performance gaming monitors here at HotHardware, so we're always on the looking for new entries from popular player in this space. So, Acer's new XZ1 series definitely caught our eyes when it was officially announced this month. Available in both 27- and 31.5-inch screen sizes, these XZ1 monitors offer plenty of features with the performance to back them up. Both monitors feature a WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution, and rock 144Hz VA panels with a 1ms response time (it should be noted that 144Hz refresh rates are supported with both DisplayPort and HDMI). Both support HDR10, but we're only looking at maximum brightness of 250 and 300 cd/m2 respectively for the XZ271U and... Read more...
Acer is at IFA 2018, and it is going official with some very cool gear. Among the products are gaming accessories and what Acer claims to be the world's lightest 15-inch notebook. Among the gaming gear is the sweet Predator XB273K gaming monitor that measures 27 inches and has a native resolution of 3840 x 2160. It supports NVIDIA G-SYNC and has a 144Hz refresh rate. The high refresh rate aims to deliver smooth images and tear-free gameplay with fast-moving on-screen action. The IPS panel used on the XB273K offers 90% DCI-P3 color space, and it is VESA Display HDR 400 certified. The monitor isn’t cheap and will sell for $1,299 when it lands during the fourth quarter in North America, EMEA,... Read more...
It was several months ago when AMD confirmed plans to introduce quad-core CPUs to its second-generation Ryzen family, and one particular SKU that has shown up in numerous leaks since then is the Ryzen 5 2500X. That same processor has made yet another appearance, this time as the foundation for a new Acer Nitro gaming desktop. Acer's new Nitro N50-100 with a Ryzen 5 2500X inside shows up on a couple of its foreign websites, including a product listing on its German portal and a sales page in its web store in Slovakia. The asking price is 934.5 euros, which is around $1,105 in US currency. In addition to having a Ryzen 5 2500X, the Nitro N50-100 sports 8GB of DDR4-2666 RAM and a Radeon RX 580 (4GB)... Read more...

However, if you're itching for a deal ahead of the big the event and happen to be in the market for a laptop, good news—Amazon has partnered with Acer to bundle a free Echo Dot with the purchase of an Alexa-enabled Nitro, Spin, or Aspire laptop. There are half a dozen laptops to choose from. As an added bonus, each one is currently marked down $50 from their respective MSRPs, so you are saving a chunk of change right off the bat and getting an Echo Dot. Acer is rolling out a new 4K Ultra HD monitor for graphics designers and other professionals who need pinpoint color accuracy and lots of brightness for their projects. They will find both in the company's new ProDesigner BM270, a 27-inch monitor with a 3840x2160 resolution at 60Hz, and an eye-searing 1,000 nits brightness rating to deliver high dynamic range (HDR) content. This is not the first HDR monitor to boast a 1,000 nits brightness rating, though such animals are comparatively rare in the wild—the vast majority of HDR displays top out in the 400-450 nits range. In addition to the impressive brightness, Acer claims the ProDesigner BM270 is pre-tuned and tested to ensure Delta E<1... Read more...
Last week, Acer announced the Predator Helios 500 gaming laptop with Intel Coffee Lake processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics. However, Acer is also making a version of the laptop for gamers that bleed AMD red.  The Predator Helios 500 (PH517-61) adopts AMD's new second-generation Ryzen processors, up to a Ryzen 7 2700. This particular processor packs a powerful punch with 8 physical cores for a total of 16 threads. Like the Predator Helios 500 that was announced last week, customers can opt for a 17.3-inch panel with either a 1080p (144Hz) or 4K (60Hz) panel, but this time around it is paired with a Radeon RX Vega 56 GPU and 8GB of HBM2. Both panels support AMD FreeSync... Read more...
It's not too often that we see epic deals on gaming notebooks, but Best Buy is currently running a promotion on the Acer Nitro 5 that made us do a double take. The laptop comes with some pretty stout specs and will only set you to back $599 (plus tax, of course). That price will get you a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920x1080) IPS display with Acer ComfyView technology to reduce screen glare. The display is backed up by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory onboard.  Powering the system is an Intel 7th generation (Kaby Lake) Core i5-7300HQ quad-core processor with a base clock of 2.5GHz and the ability to boost up to 3.5GHz. It isn't HyperThreading-enabled, but... Read more...
Chromebooks running Google's Chrome OS seem to be all the rage these days in the education sector. Low prices coupled with functional keyboards make them a cheaper, more productive alternative to Apple iPads. However, there's also a market for premium Chromebooks, as witnessed by Google's own Pixelbook, which starts at $999. Acer also wants a piece of the premium market and as a result is launching the new Chromebook 13 and Chromebook Spin 13. Both machines include a 13.5-inch Full HD+ IPS display with a resolution of 2256x1504. Acer boasts 178-degree viewing angles and a 3:2 aspect ratio, which is popular with the Microsoft Surface family and the Google Pixelbook. The Chromebook Spin... Read more...
Way back in March, we got an early glimpse at the latest entry in Acer's Predator family: the Helios 500. Today, Acer officially unveiled the stout new gaming notebook, which packs in a big 'ol 17.3-inch display. The notebook comes standard with a 144Hz Full HD (1920x1080) resolution display, but you can option it up with a nice 144Hz 4K (3840x2160) resolution display if you're willing to fork over more money. Both displays are backed by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card and G-SYNC adaptive refresh technology. Powering the machine are Intel's latest Coffee Lake-H based processors, up to a Core i9-8950HK. You can pair the processor with up to 64GB of RAM (base systems come with 16GB... Read more...
We learned earlier this week that the time has finally come for new gaming monitors based on NVIDIA's G-SYNC HDR technology to be released to the public. NVIDIA explained that monitors would be available in late May or early June. Right on cue, Newegg is now taking preorders for the Acer Predator X27. As expected, the Predator X27 features a 27-inch display panel with a 4K (3840x2160) resolution. The display's refresh rate clocks in at 144Hz and gray-to-gray response times are rated at 4ms. The IPS panel supports 10-bit color depths, features a peak brightness rating of 1,000 nits (600 nits typical) and uses Quantum Dot technology. On the connectivity front, Acer throws in HDMI... We’ve been hearing about 4K G-SYNC HDR monitors with 144Hz panels ever since CES 2017. At the time, both ASUS and Acer announced monitors that adhered to NVIDIA’s announced specs. 2017 came to a close and CES 2018 came and went with no sign of these mythical G-SYNC HDR monitors. However, NVIDIA is now saying that the time has come to unleash the beast, so to speak. The first 27-inch 144Hz monitors supporting G-SYNC HDR will launch in by the end of this month, or early June at the latest. All of these monitors will of course feature a 4K resolution (3840x2160) with virtually zero input lag. A next generation G-SYNC controller is incorporated, while the panel itself will have cover... Acer has announced refreshed Aspire Nitro 5 notebook computers, and while there are no visual changes to speak of, there is plenty going on under the hood that makes this a worth upgrade. The Nitro 5 has been updated to the latest 8th generation Intel Core i5 processors, and versions of the notebook with Core i7 processor will be arriving soon. The machines are aimed at casual gamers and pro users that need power for more complex workloads. "Acer is excited to be among the first to offer the new Intel Core i7+ processors with our new Nitro 5 gaming notebook," said Jerry Hou, General Manager, Consumer Notebooks, IT Products Business, Acer. "The new Nitro 5 provides exceptional performance... Read more...
For customers that are hip to the all-in-one PC form-factor, Acer has a new offering that is both stylish and powerful. The new Aspire S24 is incredibly thin, measuring just 0.235 inches thick in profile (the display portion). Acer says that the Aspire S24 is its thinnest all-in-one to-date. The IPS display itself measures 23.8-inches diagonally and has a Full HD resolution. The display, which has 178-degree viewing angles, is framed by incredibly narrow 0.106-inch bezels all around, which give the Aspire S24 an impressive 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. The display is tiltable from -5 to 25 degrees and includes Acer ExaColor, BluelightShield and Flickerless technologies. On the hardware front,... Read more...
Acer has not shied away from offering big and burly desktops for gamers, even if it means attaching a price tag that many people will find cost prohibitive, like the $8,999 Predator X21. A little more sane (a lot more, actually) is the company's upcoming and unannounced Predator Helios 500. This is one of several laptops in the pipeline to incorporate Intel's also-unannounced Coffee Lake-H processors. The Predator Helios 500 showed up on a Polish retailer's website, and though the listings have since been removed, the Internet has a speculator memory. In this case, there were two configurations shown, one with a Core i7-8750H processor inside and the other wielding a Core i9-8950H. Both are 6-core/12-thread... Read more...
Acer is looking to conquer the education market with a fresh take on Chrome OS-based devices for students. The company just announced the Chromebook Tab 10, which Acer claims is the first Chrome OS tablet designed specifically for the education market, and it also includes full access to the Google Play Store. The Chromebook Tab 10 features a respectable 9.7-inch 2048x1536 IPS touch display (264 pixels per inch), which puts it on equal footing with the Apple iPad. The tablet also includes a Wacom EMR stylus that allows students to draw and take notes (it can be stored within the body of the tablet when not in use). We'd have to imagine that taking notes in class with a stylus is preferable to... Read more...
Let's rewind the game tape back to CES 2017; it's at this time that we were floored by the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ display which measured 27 inches across and featured a 144Hz 4K HDR G-SYNC panel. A few months later, Acer countered with its Predator X27, offering largely the same specs. And after that... crickets. ASUS and Acer never released their draw-dropping displays, with both products seemingly being left in limbo. Now fast forward to today; two separate reports are claiming that the wait will soon be over for these fearsome displays. Both G-SYNC displays, which use an NVIDIA reference design, are now scheduled to arrive on the market in April -- they were originally supposed to ship in Summer... Read more...
We have seen an influx of Chromebooks in recent weeks, with both Dell and Lenovo launching new models primarily aimed at the education segment. These laptops run Google's cloud-oriented Chrome OS, offering students and teachers a low cost alternative to a Windows machine, but what about tablets? So for no company has released a tablet running Chrome OS. That might change, as one was spotted at the BETT show in London. Alister Payne, founder and managing director of CloudEd Solutions, a Google Education partner, posted a picture on Twitter of an Acer-brand tablet running Chrome OS. "Grade 1, 2, 3 look what's coming your way... Not official[ly] released but a Chrome OS tablet," Payne wrote. The... Read more...
