Acer has students and educators in its sights with the introduction of two new Chromebook models, including the Chromebook 11 and Chromebook 11 Spin, and a Chromebox mini PC. All three are primarily aimed at the education segment, a place where Chrome OS and, by extension, Chromebooks have thrived due to their relatively low cost and cloud capabilities. The Chromebook Spin 11 leads the pack. It is a 2-in-1 device that is similar to Google's PixelBook, in that it offers USB-C connectivity by way of two USB 3.1 Type-C ports, and comes with a stylus. However, it has a much lower starting price at $349 (PixelBooks start at $999) to reflect the lower end hardware inside—like other recent Chromebooks... Read more...

It's a massive display that measures 65-inches and has NVIDIA G-Sync technology integrated in conjunction with NVIDIA's new Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) initiative. The display also has NVIDIA SHIELD hardware built-in for streaming movies and TV shows in 4K HDR resolution. The 4K resolution monitor has ultra-low latency and a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth playback no matter how fast the action on screen. Acer is unveiling some cool new hardware at CES 2018 and among that new hardware is the Acer Swift 7 (SF714-51). That laptop is being billed as the thinnest PC in the world with a profile just 8.98mm thick. Despite its svelte profile, the machine does have an Intel Core i7 processor under the hood. Acer also integrates 4G LTE connectivity and crams all that hardware inside an all-black unibody aluminum chassis complete with a 14-inch Full HD touch display covered in Corning Gorilla Glass . The internal battery promises 10 hours of runtime per charge, and Acer says that the Swift 7 will launch in March starting at $1699. Acer is also showing off the Nitro 5 notebook aimed at causal gamers. This... Read more...
Intel’s newest 8th generation Core processors are here and have delivered promising early results in our initial tests on the desktop, and more recently in Dell's XPS 13 laptop. The biggest change with Intel's 8th Gen Core Mobile processors comes by way of doubled core counts. This makes many of this new generation of Core i5 and i7 mobile chips true quad-core processors now, with support for up to eight threads with Hyper Threading, all within a 15W TDP target. This improvement does not come without trade-offs, of course, as we see base clocks dropped by up to 900MHz relative to each chip’s predecessor. However, Intel has also seen fit to keep boost clocks high and even increased... Read more...
Microsoft is on the verge of unleashing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and alongside that major OS update will be the launch of Windows Mixed Reality headsets. We've talked about these virtual reality/augmented reality headsets on numerous occasions, but now OEMs are ramping up preorders to coincide with the October 17th launch of the Fall Creators Update. The latest OEM to open preorders is Acer, with its dryly named "Windows Mixed Reality Headset". Acer says that its Head Mounted Display (HMD) works straight out of the box with Windows Mixed Reality-ready PCs, supports six degrees of freedom, and comes equipped with a 13-foot cable to give you more freedom when navigating virtual worlds.... Acer wasted no time pouncing on Intel's 8th generation Kaby Lake Refresh (Kaby Lake-R)  processor lineup for ultrabooks and other thin and light systems. These new processor options are the foundation for Acer's next-generation Swift, Spin, and Switch models, and specifically the Swift 5 (ultralight), Spin 5 (convertible), and Switch 7 Black Edition (stylish detachable 2-in-1). "The new generation of Swift, Spin and Switch notebooks from Acer intersect functionality and mobility with the power and performance of Windows 10," said Peter Han, Vice President, Partner Devices and Solutions, Microsoft Corp. "Light, sleek and powerful, these notebooks are three great options for anyone that uses... Read more...
When it comes to gaming desktops many gamers feel like you can never have enough power inside your rig, especially if you plan to game at high resolutions with all the eye candy turned on. Acer has announced a new gaming desktop at IFA in Berlin, and the machine is high-end to say the least. Acer says that the Predator Orion 9000 is an "extreme platform for gaming and content creation." How extreme you ask? Well, the Predator Orion 9000 can be fitted with up to an Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition processor with 18-cores and up to 36-threads. Graphics can be up to 4-way AMD Radeon RX Vega video cards or a pair of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards in SLI. All of that hardware is crammed inside... Read more...
While VR is the big thing for gaming, there is another similar tech that PC makers and software giant Microsoft really want to take off in a big way and that is mixed reality. VR and mixed reality are similar in that both have virtual constructs in them, but in VR everything that the user of the tech sees is virtual whereas mixed reality overlays virtual objects with your real world environment. Mixed reality has big potential to revolutionize industry with the ability to help train new workers and to bring gaming into your home in a new way. Microsoft writes, "A little over ten months ago our mixed reality journey took a leap forward when we announced that the world’s largest PC makers were... Read more...
Earlier this morning, Intel announced the first processors in its 8th generation Core family. These mobile processors include Core i5 and Core i7 SKUs with a TDP of 15 watts, and all are quad-core designs capable of executing eight threads. As we expected, the first products based around the processors are coming to light, with Acer taking the plunge with the Nitro 5 Spin. Acer describes the Nitro 5 Spin as a convertible notebook that is “designed for light gaming”, and we don’t disagree with that assessment. At the heart of the convertible is an Intel Core i7-i7-8550U processor, which has a core clock of 1.8GHz and a maximum Turbo clock of 4GHz. Like Intel, Acer is claiming a 40 percent performance... Acer has been on the Chromebook bandwagon since it began and has learned a thing or two about the platform. The biggest lesson is that any electronic device that is primarily intended for the education market needs to leave fragility at the door. To that end, Acer's new Chromebook 11 C771 packs a few performance upgrades into a rugged design that is not going to shatter into a thousand pieces if dropped. That is not just for the benefit of kids who are still developing their motor skills, but also school administrators, teachers, and everyone else involved the hustle and bustle of a busy school day. The same can be said for business users, though the audience outside of education is a bit smaller... Read more...

Acer whet our appetites with by teasing its Predator Triton 700 earlier this year, but today we’re hearing more about the no compromises gaming laptop. Specifically, we’re learning that the Predator Triton 700 will be one of the first products to take full advantage of NVIDIA’s Max-Q Design. As Marco explained earlier today, Max-Q is a deft combination of GPU tuning, game optimization, and thermal management, which helps keep GeForce GTX 10-Series graphics cards operating at peak efficiency while under stress. Acer goes one step further, invoking NASA’s efforts with rocker design. “Max-Q, an integral part of NASA’s mission to launch man into space, is defined as the point at which the aerodynamic... Computex is kicking off this week and Acer is joining in on the festivities with the announcement of two new mobile products. For those looking for a gaming laptop that won’t burst your budget, the company has announced its new Nitro 5 series. Acer says that the 15.6-inch Nitro 5 is aimed at casual gamers, and can be outfitted with Kaby Lake Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Given its lower positioning on Acer’s mobile gaming totem pole, your graphics options max out with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (which is still no slouch when it comes to 1080p gaming). If you prefer to get your primary motivation from AMD silicon, you can also choose from A-Series FX, A12 or A10 APUs. Likewise, these... Read more...
Acer is known for its outrageous gaming monitors, and that is even more apparent today with the new Predator Z35P. The company announced that the Predator Z35P is available for pre-order right here in the United States, and that it will hit retail shelves later this month. At its heart is a hulking 35-inch 21:9 UltraWide WQHD (3440x1440) panel. If that wasn’t enough, the Predator Z35P features a 1800r curvature to make gaming more immersive at it slightly wraps around your field of view. The monitor is capable of handling 3440x1440 content at 100Hz when hooked up via DisplayPort, however, its maximum resolution can only be achieved at 50Hz via HDMI. Other features include 178-degree viewing angles... Read more...
If you’ve been itchin’ to get your hands on new [relatively] affordable mixed reality hardware designed for Windows 10 PCs, the wait is nearly over. Microsoft today at Build 2017 announced that preorders are open for Windows Mixed Reality headset dev kits from Hewlett-Packard and Acer. Both of the headsets use “inside-out tracking", negating the need for external cameras or IR emitters, and provide six degrees of freedom in mixed reality environments. “You’ll be ready to code new mixed reality experiences out of box with a headset and a Windows 10 Creator’s Update PC that meets our recommended hardware specifications for developers,” Microsoft explains to developers. “We invite developers to... Remember when convertible notebooks were considered a luxury? That's especially true for convertibles that have four different modes: laptop, stand, tent, and tablet. It was also considered a luxury to have a notebook that could last more than 10 hours on a single battery charge. Acer's TravelMate Spin B1 has all of those features, so it must fetch quite the premium, right? Nope - this laptop starts out at a meager $299 USD. Acer unveiled this laptop at a Microsoft education event, so its target audience is going to be obvious from the get-go. That also inherently means that there are going to be a couple of caveats, with two rather big ones surrounding this device. First, it's not a powerhouse... Read more...
Acer just unveiled their new Switch 3 and Switch 5 2-in-1 hybrid notebook convertibles. The thin and light devices now pack Intel Kaby Lake processors, a completely fanless cooling system, and Acer Active Pen. Acer claims that various features of the hybrids will also help boost productivity at work, school, and for fun. The Acer Switch 5James Lin, General Manager of Commercial & Detachable Notebooks, IT Products Business for Acer, remarked, “Acer’s Switch line is now able to reach more customers, whether they are looking for something that provides the latest in performance and features, or if they need a more accessible option for studies, work and play.” The Acer Switch 5The Switch... Acer is determined to keep gamers entertained with a flurry of new products, and it is targeting mobile-minded gamers with the introduction of the Predator Triton 700 and Predator Helios 300 gaming notebooks, both of which can be equipped with Intel Kaby Lake processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-Series graphics cards. The Predator Triton 700 is perhaps the star of the two, sporting a 0.74-inch thick frame that seems to take direct aim at the Razer Blade family of gaming notebooks. The Predator Triton 700 features an aluminum chassis and a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display with G-SYNC. Powering the 5.7-pound machine are Intel’s seventh-generation Kaby Lake Core processors, which can be partnered with... Read more...
We’ve seen plenty of gaming excess over the years when it comes to desktop and notebook systems, but the Acer Predator 21 X definitely comes close to taking first prize when it comes to over-the-top gaming goodness (at least on the mobile side). First announced earlier this year at CES, the Acer is finally shipping the massive 21-inch gaming notebook. The only disappointing aspect, well other than its price, is the display resolution of the machine. Even though the gaming notebook features an expansive 21-inch display, the screen resolution is a somewhat disappointing 2560x1080 instead of 4K. However, when it comes to everything else, the Predator 21 X goes completely bonkers with its specs,... Read more...
Acer is further fleshing out its gaming monitor lineup with the release of yet another UltraWide release. Today’s addition comes in the form of the XR382CQK, which sports a massive 37.5-inch 21:9 display with a resolution of 3840x1600. But the UltraWide resolution isn’t the only thing that the XR382CQK brings to the table; the curved monitor (2300R) also has a ZeroFrame design that minimizes unsightly bezels to give users a more immersive gaming experience. Acer has also infused the XR382CQK with a 5ms IPS panel that offer 172-degree horizontal and 178-degree vertical viewing angles. Brightness is listed at 300 nits, 1.07 billion colors are supported (with 100 percent of the sRGB gamut) and the... Read more...
When it comes to over-the-top gaming hardware, Acer knows how to put on a show. Such is the case with the monstrous Predator 21 X gaming notebook, which is set to launch next month. Announced today at CES, the Predator 21 X is the world’s first curved screen notebook, and as its name implies, it measures a massive 21 inches diagonally. While the sheer size of the display is impressive, its resolution isn’t. We were expecting to see at least a 4K (3840x2160) display resolution, but instead we’re greeted with a resolution of 2560x1080. The IPS panel supports a 120Hz refresh rate and incorporates NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. The Predator 21 X includes not one, but two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs in SLI,... Read more...
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is barely more than a week away, but not every company is waiting for the annual convention in Las Vegas to show off their new product lines. In an effort to beat the rush, Acer today unveiled its new Aspire C Series of incredibly thin all-in-one systems measuring a scant 8mm, which is thinner than some smartphones, and starting at an affordable $450. These are sleek and sexy machines with brushed metal backs, optional gold accents, and a stand made out of metal to ensure a sturdy foundation. They're also ergonomic—Acer says users can adjust the display from -5 to +20 degrees (15 degrees titled back or 5 degrees tilted forward), though the AIOs do not support... Read more...
