It's the second such "pocket dialing leads to arrest" story in less than a month, and you have to admit, it makes one wonder a) what kind of cell phones these criminals are using, and b) why they don't use a belt holster. Authorities say a Georgia man "pocket-dialed" 911. The dispatcher on the other end of the line overheard people discussing a drug deal. The call was made around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Col. Jeff Strickland said the dispatcher could overhear several people speaking about a drug deal involving prescription drugs. A deputy was sent to a Gainesville Waffle House restaurant, from where the police determined the call originated. The deputy eventually found the cell phone in... Read more...

San Francisco, home of the Giants and land of sometimes questionable mandates, like the one passed last year that would require cell phone retailers to slap a label on their devices indicating radiation levels. The measure created a bit of a firestorm on the Internet over whether such a label was really needed or simply ridiculous. For now, San Francisco is betting on the latter. According to a report in The San Francisco Chronicle, city officials have now decided to delay implementing what is known as the "Right to Know" ordinance, placing it on indefinite hold, likely until a different version takes its place. So why the change of heart? Image Credit: Flickr (Salim Virji) It's not just the... Read more...
Pocket dialing is when a cell phone stuffed in someone's pocket accidentally dials an actual number. In perhaps the worst example of pocket dialing ever, three larceny suspects were arrested after police overheard planning break-ins in upstate New York when one of the pocket dialed "911." Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh said that after the call came in, a dispatcher relayed the conversation to deputies. The men described their surroundings and discussed their plans as police listened, and even commented, "there go the cops now." That information was enough to give a deputy enough of their location that he turned around and stopped their car, a Kia Sportage which was full of tools they had... Read more...
We've seen a number of hot smartphones hit the market recently, including the HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Charge, and others. Although each phone has its own appeal, there are also a lot of similarities among today's hottest smartphones—most have a 1GHz processor, at least 16GB of storage in one form or another, at least a 4-inch display, etc. Sprint and Kyocera weren't content to simply offer more of the same in terms of smartphones. That's where the Kyocera Echo comes in to play. This smartphone features an innovative design with not one, but two, screens. The Echo is the first dual-touchscreen Android-based smartphone to hit the market, and it certainly brings a new experience to Android.... Read more...

It seems that devices keep getting thinner and thinner, which makes us think about just how thin our smartphones and other devices can really get. If a development by engineers at Queen's University Human Media Lab is any indication, our future phones may be a lot thinner than you might think. The engineers have created a "PaperPhone." As you might assume from its name, this slim smartphone is so thin that it's almost like paper. In fact, it can even bend like paper, and you actually control the phone by bending the device. The PaperPhone can memorize bend points and directions and will respond with different actions depending on how you bend the phone. The developers hope the technology could... Read more...
