Maybe brand new Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai is rethinking his decision to take the reins of legendary Japanese electronics maker; a day after announcing its new CEO, Sony delivered its financials for the quarter October-December 2011, and the results were less than stellar. The company lost $2.1 billion in the quarter and predicts losses $2.9 billion... Read more...
Sony has a new lead man. Howard Stringer will be heading out (probably to play a few rounds of golf), while long-time Sony exec Kazuo Hirai will take over as Sony's President and Chief Executive Office. Sir Howard won't be leaving entirely; he'll be moving over to become Chairman of the Board of Directors in June. The move isn't entirely unexpected,... Read more...
Well, this is strange. But not entirely unexpected. Rumors had intensified in the last few days that HP was getting ready to switch CEOs for the second time in a year, and those rumors were just put to rest. Because they're true. In September of last year, former CEO of SAP, Léo Apotheker, was chosen to lead HP after the Mark Hurd scandal.... Read more...
It's official, we're in the wrong business. Don't get us wrong, playing with the latest hardware and sharing our experiences with our awesome reader base is a blast, and there aren't many things we'd trade this gig for. Being CEO of Apple is one of the few exceptions. Don't take it personal if you're a die hard Windows user, it's just that... Read more...
There's tons of talk surrounding Apple right now, and for good reason. The man who directed a huge amount of Apple's comeback story has stepped aside as CEO, and there are plenty of unanswered questions moving forward. But it's important to note a few things. First, Tim Cook has been a monumental figure at Apple... Read more...
In the wake of Steve Jobs' departure, Apple is probably going to have a rough couple of days, but one can't but chuckle at the irony of the former CEO's timing. Apple has a long history of doing things in a way that surpasses their competition and Jobs' announcement handily surpasses HP's decision to abandon tablets and PCs. HP, after all,... Read more...
In the span of mere days, Google announced its intentions to acquire Motorola Mobility, HP halted webOS and PC production, and the TouchPad went on a fire sale at just $99. Now, Steve Jobs is stepping down as Apple's CEO. August has surely been a shocking month for the tech world. In fact, the news from Cupertino was... Read more...
AMD released its results for Q2 2011 today and the news was generally good, though not as strong as investors might have preferred. Sales revenue was $1.57B, down two percent from Q1 and five percent year-on-year. AMD notes that Q2 was a 13 week quarter as opposed to the 14-week Q1, but that's not something that hurt Intel's results. Operating... Read more...
One might say that Steve Jobs can't be doing too terribly bad (regarding his health) if he has it in him to go out on the town for dinner, but when the President calls you, we assume you make every effort to hide any ailments and just make the event. Barack Obama attended a dinner in northern California this week with... Read more...
The times, they are a-changin'! It's not exactly normal to see two high-profile companies announce market-shaking news about their primary leaders in the same week, but 2011 is definitely shaping up to be an unusual year. Just a few days after Apple's Steve Jobs decided to take a medical leave of absence, Google has... Read more...
With Dirk Meyer out the door and AMD publicly hunting for its new CEO there's a great deal of speculation as to who AMD might want sitting in the center seat. The board's options may be more limited than it likes; several analysts have raised questions as to the BoD's credibility in the wake of Meyer's dismissal. AMD announces its Q4 earnings... Steve Jobs is in the news again today, and not for the best of reasons. Last week, Apple's Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook took the stage at a Verizon Wireless event in New York City in order to co-introduce the iPhone 4 for VZW. Many found that peculiar. Why wouldn't Steve Jobs take this opportunity to introduce... Read more...
And just like that, another CEO rolls into an HP corner office. Not even two months after HP's Mark Hurd resigned as the CEO of Hewlett-Packard, a replacement has been found. It's not immediately clear why the temporary CEO wasn't positioned as full-time, nor is perfectly clear why HP went outside of the company. We always have to wonder what... Read more...
And just like that, it's done. Rumors were flaring over the past couple of months that Nokia's existing CEO was on the hot seat. We guess those rumors weren't wrong. It's being reported that a search for a new Nokia CEO had been ongoing since at least May, and it seems that Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo's replacement has now been found. The timing... Read more...
Less than 24 hours after Oracle named ousted HP CEO Mark Hurd as co-president, HP has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against him. To be honest, if Monday had not been Labor Day, and if the announcement hadn't been made so late in the day, they probably would have filed a lawsuit that same day. While Hurd didn't sign a non-compete agreement,... Read more...
Ousted HP CEO Mark Hurd, 53, who abruptly resigned on Friday after an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, will receive an exit package worth $28 million. In fact, prior to Friday's events, Hurd had been negotiating with the company over a new three-year contract which would have been worth $100 million, according to an unnamed... Read more...
Out of nowhere, HP CEO has resigned. Quit. Left the company. Headed for other pastures. Late on a Friday, after most investors had headed out for the weekend, Hewlett-Packard quietly dropped a bomb that their CEO was no more. Effective immediately, CEO Mark Hurd no longer has his CEO title, and CEO Cathie Lesjak has been appointed interim... Read more...
Where this is smoke, there is fire, right? That's the old saying, and it's not still being said for no particular reason. Nokia as a whole has been struggling to keep pace over the past few years, mostly due to an inability to release a "hero level" smartphone to compete with the iPhone and various other Android... To say that the writing hasn't really been on the wall means that you really haven't been paying attention to Nokia. Though the company still holds on to the "biggest in terms of global market share" award, Nokia has recently come under fire for not producing adequate rivals to the iPhone and a host of Android phones that currently lead the... Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo is probably the most oddly named CEO in the world, but it's okay, since he's the head of the planet's biggest phone maker in terms of global market share. But Nokia isn't the giant they once were, and holding the lion's share of the phone market is becoming much, much more difficult with new... Read more...
Several financial analysts have weighed in on AMD's Q2 performance since the company announced results, and their collective opinion has been anything but good. In the wake of its earnings call, AMD has been taken to task over its failure to provide an answer to Atom (or a netbook processor in general), weak margins... Read more...
Well, isn't this something? We knew that Palm was looking to reinvent itself after the Centro, and that was never more apparent than when the slipping company managed to convince Apple's own Jon Rubinstein to step in and take on a high-level management position. Jon is largely credited with putting the wind back in Palm's sails and pushing... Read more...
