Back in May, Samsung unveiled a high-tech gadget for data centers called the CXL Memory Expander, essentially a memory expansion device that utilizes the newer Compute Express Link interconnect standard. As with most hardware, however, the clever device is only as good as the software. To address that fact, Samsung has now introduced what it says is the industry's first open-source software solution that is specifically designed to support the CXL memory platform. The upshot of Samsung's CXL memory expander is it allows clients to scale memory capacities and bandwidth in data centers to terabyte levels, going well beyond what was previously possible. CXL itself is an open, industry-supported... Read more...
Data centers have a new high-tech toy to play with, courtesy of Samsung. Called the CXL Memory Expander, it sort of looks like an external storage device (from the renders) in the vein of Samsung's T7 Portable SSD, but it is nothing of the sort. This is essentially a memory expansion device that leverages the new Compute Express Link (CXL) interconnect standard. Why not just stick with conventional DDR-based memory? Well, there is a limitation imposed by memory channels, whereas Samsung's CXL-enabled module scales memory capacity to terabyte levels, in DDR5 form to boot. In addition, Samsung says its new solution dramatically reduces system latency caused by memory caching. CXL, by the way, is... Read more...
Earlier this morning, we reported that NVIDIA snapped up Israeli chip firm Mellanox for $6.9 billion in an effort to bolster its pursuits in the high-performance computing market. For those not in the know, Mellanox specializes in high-performance data interconnects -- namely InfiniBand -- which is used in most of today's supercomputers and hyperscale data centers. An interesting wrinkle to this story is that Intel was also reportedly in talks to purchase Mellanox, but lost out to NVIDIA in the end. So, Intel is looking to grab some attention of its own in this space with the announcement that it is leading a consortium that will spearhead the continued development of the Compute... Read more...
