Alienware's m15 series of notebooks has typically impressed us, thanks to the family's performance and unique good looks in a relatively svelte mobile package. Performance always hinges upon having the latest platform hardware, so perhaps it's no surprise that the laptop we're looking at today has one of NVIDIA's latest mobile Ampere GPUs on board from its new GeForce RTX 30 family. When NVIDIA pulled the lid off mobile Ampere, it made some pretty big promises. Performance across the Ampere lineup that spans from RTX 3060 to 3080 should be faster than NVIDIA's previous mobile powerhouse, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER. That bodes well for the middle child in NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 30 Mobile... Read more...
This year's virtual CES 2021 is wrapping up today, but before we close out our coverage, we wanted to take you on a tour of a couple of rather innovative products from Dell. The Dell OptiPlex 7090 Ultra is a compact, modular PC that actually resides inside the monitor stand of this bodacious and gorgeous Dell UltraSharp 40, 40-inch monitor. And then there's the Dell Latitude 4920 2-in-1 laptop that has a few tricks up its sleeve as well. We got some in-studio hands-on time with these new Dell products that will launch either this month or soon in the Spring of 2021, so strap-in and let's take a gander.   First, an honorable mention for the Dell UltraSharp 40 is in order. This big, beautiful... Read more...
This year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was a different sort of animal than all previous ones, as the Coronavirus pandemic took away the feasibility of big crowds congregating in Las Vegas. In light of the situation, CES went completely virtual this year. What did not change, however, was the excitement and barrage of product releases and announcements that have become a staple of the annual tech event. This year did not disappoint in that regard. And as in previous years, there were some standouts among the bunch. What exactly stood out the most? Quite a few products, actually, which we have taken the liberty of highlighting. From next-gen laptops sporting brand new CPU and GPU hardware,... Read more...
Over the years, Dell has produced some sleek yet almost alien in appearance products, hence the Alienware brand. These computers have always been on the bleeding-edge of technology, and Dell continues that trend at CES 2021. We get to see a refresh of the Alienware m15, m17, and Alienware Aurora R10, which should pack a punch for gaming and productivity. Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 Back in October, we took a look at the Alienware m15 R3 that we found to be a high-performing option when it came to gaming laptops. Now, Dell gives the lineup an update with the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000-series graphics, but it retains 10th gen Intel processors with up to an Intel Core i9-10980HK. Because of... Read more...
It is CES 2021 time and companies are beginning to show off what they have created over the last year.  Now, Dell is back in business with a number of different laptops that have been refreshed with the latest Intel Core processors and some extra nifty features.  We have compiled some of what they have to show down below, and there are certainly some interesting things this year... Latitude 5000 Series The Dell Latitude 5000 Series could be the best choice for business and educational purposes of all the offerings from Dell. While that statement is bold, the laptops have some bold specs to back that up. Within the 5000 Series is the 13.3” Latitude 5320, 14” Latitude 5420,... Read more...
Dell on Tuesday unveiled a bunch of new displays, including what it claims are the world's first video conferencing monitors certified for Microsoft Teams. It is an interesting pitch, and sign of the times—more people than ever these days are working remotely, a result of COVID-19. And even if recent vaccines eradicate the threat in the coming months, it is feasible that telecommuting will remain immensely popular. That presents an opportunity for PC hardware makers to design and build products that are suited for this new reality we find ourselves in for the foreseeable future. And Dell has done just that with its new and appropriately branded Video Conferencing Monitor line, which currently... Read more...
Earlier this morning, we brought you some deals on excellent gaming laptops that complete with discrete graphics and chest-thumping 6- and 8-core processors. The cheapest entry on that last came in $849, but our next list is aimed at laptops priced at $750 or less. First up on our list is the Dell Inspiron 7000 2-in-1, which Best Buy is currently selling in both 15.6-inch and 13.3-inch configurations. The 13.3-inch model is cheaper at $649.99 and features an 11th generation (Tiger Lake) Core i5-1135G7 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a display resolution of 1920x1080. Graphics duties are of course handled by the integrated 12th generation Iris Xe graphics controller.... Read more...
Most of you reading this have long since moved on from using those bulky CRT monitors of yesteryear, the kind of big and heavy displays that would break your back if you had to lug them up a flight of steps (been there, done that). Nevertheless, you might still be on the hunt for a new monitor, one that is primed for gaming. If so, now is a good time, with Cyber Monday deals bringing discounts on a bunch of models. One of the more affordable gaming monitors is the HP X24C, priced at $189.99 at Amazon (Save $40 - 17% Off). It features a 23.6-inch VA display with a 1500R curvature and 1920x1080 resolution. This display also boats a speedy 144Hz refresh rate, and is a FreeSync Premium model, making... Read more...
The deals keep pouring in, and we're doing our level best to keep up with them. While building a PC by hand can be a fun and exciting project, sometimes (like right now) components are hard to come by, and buying an off-the-shelf desktop presents itself as a convenient and time-saving method for getting a new system up and running. The folks at Dell and Alienware have a nice selection of PCs on sale for the unofficial shopping holiday, and we've got the best ones picked out here.  Amazon has deals on a pair of Dell G5 Gaming Desktop systems that are a bit lighter on the budget. The first has a Core i5-10400F, 8 GB f system memory, GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER graphics, and a 256 GB SSD... Read more...
Intel's 10-nanometer Tiger Lake processors have one of the fastest CPU architectures available in Windows notebooks today. That's not to say they've got the fastest overall CPUs, though. There are competing mobile processors available with more cores and support for additional threads that are better suited for complex, multi-threaded tasks. It does, however, mean that right now Intel's single-threaded performance in Windows notebooks is king. It only makes sense, then, that Dell would want to bring Tiger Lake to its XPS 13 2-in-1 family as quickly as possible, because fast single-thread performance translates into a snappy, response experience, which is something everyone wants. The world's... Read more...
If there is one thing we can count on whenever hot new component hardware arrives, it's that it will not be long before Dell integrates it into their Alienware gaming systems. So naturally, with the release of Nvidia’s latest and greatest GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 graphics cards, it was no surprise to see Alienware desktops already shipping out with these cards on deck. The Alienware Aurora R11 we have in our lab today features Dell's highest-performance configuration with an RTX 3090 to create what representatives at Dell are calling a “Benchmark Bruiser.” We will, of course, get to those benchmarks, but first let’s get familiar with this new Alienware machine itself.... Intel's 11th Gen Core Tiger Lake family of processors really impressed us in terms of is single-threaded performance gains as well as its general high level performance. It doesn't matter what the task, content creation, productivity or otherwise, 11th-generation Core processors from Intel could handle it with ease. The only problem, as we saw it, was that the newest tech was only initially available in some higher-end, high-priced systems. Dell has come to the rescue today, however, with its midrange Inspiron 14 5000 series of notebooks and 2-in-1 systems, and we think the price is just right.  Dell has a pair of Inspiron 14 5000 systems up for sale on the PC maker's own website.... Finding a GeForce RTX 3080 or GeForce RTX 3090 in stock and at MSRP (or thereabouts) is virtually impossible at the moment, and NVIDIA warns that demand is likely to exceed supply into next year. Bummer. However, it is a different situation if buying a pre-built PC. Case in point, Dell just upgraded its Alienware Aurora R11 and Aurora Ryzen Edition R10 gaming desktops with GeForce RTX 30 series GPU options. The GPUs are custom variants by Dell, with its own designed cooling scheme featuring 10mm copper heatpipes, vapor chambers, and dual axial fans. That also means they look a bit different than a typical Founders Edition model, or even most third-party versions. Not that the aesthetic really... Read more...
Dell has announced some new updates to its UltraSharp family of monitors, including the UltraSharp 32 HDR PremierColor Monitor, UltraSharp 24 USB-C Monitor, and UltraSharp 34 Curved USB-C Hub Monitor. With more and more people working from home these days due to COVID-19, having access to a quality display for getting work done (and seeing your coworkers) is paramount. So, Dell is hoping that these three additions will make a great impression on business professionals. Perhaps the most interesting of the three monitors is the UltraSharp 32 HDR PremierColor (UP3221Q), which as its name implies measures 32 inches across. It has a 4K display resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz. It covers 98.8... Read more...
Thin and light gaming laptops are no longer a novelty, as practically every PC maker offers their own take on the category. Some of them don't always stand-out from the crowd, however, and can push the envelope on thermals in ever-tighter chassis designs. That is most definitely not the case with Dell's Alienware m15 R3 though, unless you want to compare it to last year's Alienware m15 R2. At a passing glance, this year's refresh looks just like last year's model. That is not a bad thing, as the new m15 R3 is a head-turning laptop with some notable improvements to this newest iteration, including a revamped cooling solution. Quite frankly, we are just fine with the overall physical design staying... Read more...
While COVID-19 can claim some credit for more workers than ever performing their job duties remotely over the course of this year, the fact is the corporate world has been moving in that direction for a long time. At the same time, more businesses are trusting their data with private datacenters or public cloud hosting solutions. The two-fold struggle for IT departments has been how to securely give employees access to cloud apps, in-house data servers, and applications, while also managing a fleet of PCs when that fleet is outside of the corporate firewall. VPNs can help but there's a lot more to it than that. In fact, VPNs are just another variable that has to be considered, and often... Read more...
Earlier this month, Intel launched its highly anticipated 11th generation Tiger Lake platform complete with the 12th generation Iris Xe graphics engine. As we've already discovered in our early performance preview of Tiger Lake, the new CPU family will deliver some strong gains for thin and light notebooks this year. However, conspicuously missing from the early Tiger Lake announcements were any from Dell regarding its highly popular XPS 13 notebook and XPS 13 2-in-1 convertible. That silence is now over, as the company has announced that both product lines are being updated with Tiger Lake power.  For both the XPS 13 and the XPS 13 2-in-1, there will be... Read more...
Dell is making a bid for business customers in search of a premium Chromebook with its newly launched Latitude 7410 Chromebook Enterprise, a 14-inch laptop (or 2-in-1, if you prefer to call it that) co-developed with Intel as part of the Project Athena innovation program. It offers a 4K display, long battery life, and a host of interesting features. "This is not just another Chromebook," said Rahul Tikoo, senior vice president, Commercial Product Group, Dell Technologies. "Our latest Latitude Chromebook Enterprise is designed equal parts for employees and IT managers adopting Chrome OS in the enterprise. Employees will appreciate its sleek design and collaboration features that help them navigate... Read more...
It's just about time for students around the country to go back to school, meaning that many are in need of a new notebook computer. Anyone looking for a notebook with a blend of portability and performance for school, work, or fun might want to take a look at the Dell XPS 13, which offers a solid mix of performance, style, and portability. Currently, Dell has some deals going on the XPS 13 Touch Laptop, offering substantial discounts making the entry-level version under $700. Dell offers the entry-level machine with a $209 discount off of its regular $908 price tag, bringing the purchase price to $699.99. For the money, buyers get a 10th generation Intel Core i5-10210U that operates at up to... Read more...
Wnen we reviewed the Alienware m15 R2 last year, we noted that Dell had "not yet circumvented the laws of physics" to allow a potent gaming laptop to keep temps totally in check, with so much high-end hardware underneath the hood. Simply put, it could get hot under load. It seems Dell has tackled the challenge with aplomb, however, as this year's Alienware m15 R3 apparently runs much cooler, and does it without a major redesign to the chassis. In our own testing of last year's model, the GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q inside our test system did actually keep potentially toasty temps at bay, by never jumping past 75C at load. But on the CPU side, the Core i7-9750H in our test configuration got pretty... Read more...
If you’re the owner of the recently released Dell XPS 17 9700, you may have noticed some issues with regards to charging when running CPU intensive tasks. Most would expect that a laptop would drain its battery when you’re not plugged in to a charger, but new XPS 17 9700 owners are experiencing battery drain while actually charging. The issue was first noticed by the folks at Notebookcheck while playing The Witcher 3 at 1080p resolution. The XPS 17 9700 comes with a 91 WHr battery, and the publication charged the battery to 100 percent and left it attached to its 130W wall charger before starting the game. Once they started playing the game, it was noted that... Read more...
