The AIO PC form factor isn't new by any means, but it's only recently begun to make a broad market appearance across a number of manufacturers beyond Apple or HP, who were among the first to pioneer the form factor. Better touchscreen technology, combined with lower prices, has made AIO PCs both practical and affordable. The ET2410 from Asus attempts to be both of these things. It's an $850 system built around Intel's Sandy Bridge platform and packaged in an ultra-slim body that looks fashionable and takes up very little space, despite bringing a sizable 23.6-inch touchscreen to the AIO party... Don't let the doomsayers sell you on the idea that the desktop PC is dead. Far from it, desktops are just now entering their heyday with blazing fast multi-core processors, gobs of RAM, high definition output, SuperSpeed USB 3.0, HDMI connectivity, wireless input devices, and everything else you might find on a modern day system. No, desktops aren't dying; if anything, they're finding new ways of securing a permanent spot in your living room, your office, your dorm room, and even places like your kitchen counter or man cave. All of these areas are places all-in-one (AIO) PCs have been known to dwell. The AIO form factor isn't new by any means, but it's only recently begun to make a broad market... Read more...

Perhaps it's not a major surprise that Meg Whitman is making a stamp on the future of HP by not acting impulsively, but still, pulling the company's massive personal computing devision back from the brink is newsworthy in the finest sense of the word. While it's not quite as jarring as the thought of reviving webOS, HP has today announced that it has completed its evaluation of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group (PSG) and has decided the unit will remain part of the company. Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer, offered the following comments: "HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It feels like only yesterday that we evaluated the Asus 2400ET, a touch-enabled All-In-One desktop that had high-end specifications and a $1,250 price tag to match. Turns out, that was nearly four months ago, and if you aren't interested in a touch panel, a Core i5 processor, and don't have deep pockets, perhaps the scaled-back ET2011 we'll be showing you here is worth consideration. This is a somewhat unique product in the Asus Eee Top ET2011 AIO line up, in that in relies on AMD's Fusion Brazos E-350 APU in lieu of a more traditional desktop processor... Despite the fact that HP will be shuffling out of the consumer PC business, there are quite a few products in the pipeline that have to get out first. The company has just revealed "its largest investment in the all-in-one desktop PC market to date," but it's a shame that it could very well be its last big investment in the space. The company's shipping two new Omni PCs, the 20-inch diagonal HP Omni 120 and 21.5-inch diagonal HP Omni 220 PCs, which tout built-in speakers, HD displays and HP LinkUp, which lets users view and interact with content from a notebook PC on the Omni PC. Changes are saved directly to the notebook, so there are no file transfer hassles. The 20-inch HP TouchSmart 320,... Read more...
Years back, embedded systems weren't much good in the consumer realm. They were used for rather boring enterprise applications, and not much else. But with the power packed even into low-end CPUs and APUs these days, that's all changing. Habey USA is leading that charge in a way, with the introduction of quite a few interested embedded rigs in recent months. The company's newest is the BIS-6564, combining both Habey’s ICEFIN case design and embedded MITX-6564 board to bring a fanless, high performance embedded system. Equipped with the low powered dual core Atom and dual heat pipes, the BIS-6564 eliminates the uncertainty of fan failure while operable in temperatures of up to 60C. The NVidia... Read more...
Small just keeps getting smaller. Zotac's ZBOX line has been around for a few years now, and we've been rather impressed with every iteration that we have played with. But the "palm-sized" ZBOX Nano AD10 makes those prior models look like giants. The new AD10 series shrinks the form factor even more, and inside it's packed with an AMD Brazos E-350 APU. The box itself measures 127mm x 127mm x 45mm, and it comes bundled with a Windows Media Center compatible remote control – a USB IR receiver is also included. Within, you'll be able to install your own DDR3 SO-DIMM (1 slot) and a 2.5" SATA 6Gbps drive, or you can buy a kit model that ships with 2GB of memory and a 320GB HDD. Other specs include... It's that time again. The time of year where students and parents frantically hit e-tailers with overnight shipping deals in order to get that all-important back-to-school technology into a dorm room or backpack before classes begins. It's back-to-school season, and whether you've started classes recently or are awaiting (dreading?) that first 8AM lecture, there may be a few bits of techno-shopping that need to be taken care of before you can be on your way to that straight-A report card... If you thought Google buying Motorola Mobility was a bombshell to end all bombshells, have a look at this. HP just announced their most recent earnings, but that's hardly the buzz. In a rather camouflaged way, HP just made a couple of huge, huge announcements that will no doubt leave a lasting impression on the technology universe. For starters, they confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Autonomy Corporation plc regarding a possible business combination -- a combination that involves an offer. HP also reported that it plans to announce that its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group (PSG). HP will consider a broad range... One of Alienware’s Aurora R3 gaming systems crash landed at HotHardware, and today it's us performing the Alien(ware) autopsy. We dissected the Aurora R3 from head to toe, discovered what makes it tick, and then fed it a handful of games and other software to observe how it digests a diet of DirectX 11 and other modern morsels, all in the name of science, of course... As the final days of summer wind down, most people will find themselves in one of two situations. Either you're gearing up to head back to school, or it's life as usual, only with worse weather right around the corner. It doesn't matter which category you fall into, because either way, there's a good chance you'll be spending less time outside grilling steaks and squandering more of your free moments inside your home or dorm, sheltered from the inclement weather, sitting behind a PC. If you're ready for a new rig to last until next summer (and beyond), it's time to make a decision: Do you play the part of Polly Prudence and pick up a modest machine that's good enough to surf the Web and... Admittedly, small form factor machines have seemingly vanished from the spotlight in recent years, but there are still a handful of companies out there working at them. CompuLab is one of them, and this week they've introduced the Trim-Slice. The Trim-Slice H is an ARM Cortex A9-powered desktop that runs on NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset. The Trim-Slice further extends the usability of ARM on the desktop by incorporating an accessible bay for a 2.5" SATA hard-disk inside the miniature fanless casing, and will be offered in a couple of models: the $279 Trim-Slice H Diskless, where the buyer can add the hard disk or SSD, and the $319 Trim-Slice H250 which comes with a 250GB hard disk and Linux pre-installed.... Nothing like the fresh smell of a new PC to get the morning started right. So thinks Lenovo, as they've just announced the latest in their biz-centric ThinkCentre line. The new M71z is an all-in-one desktop designed for large businesses, schools and governments, but as always, there's nothing stopping the average consumer from taking advantage here as well. There's a current-gen Core family processor, a touchscreen (optional) and support for advanced video conferences. Folks can load it up with RAM and up to 1TB of storage, or pop in a 160GB SSD for the serious Excel junkie. There's a 20" panel, DVD burner, optional WiFi, six USB ports, chassis intrusion switch and DisplayPort for viewing... Read more...
