Typically when installing a patch for a game the expectation is that it will improve performance, stomp out bugs, and maybe even make the title look better, depending on what it brings to the tablet. That isn't the case for some gamers with the Fall update for Battlefield 1. PC gamers who applied the latest BF1 patch are up in arms over a degradation in graphics and they've gotten DICE's attention. A thread is that is 30 pages and growing is filled with complaints on the official BF1 forum. Some questioned whether others were seeing things, chalking the whole thing up to a placebo effect of sorts, though the degraded graphics are more easily seen on higher resolutions with the eye candy cranked... Electronic Arts and Dice are busy putting the final touches on Battlefield 1 in preparation for its release on October 21, but it's not the only Battlefield title receiving attention. There's a new user interface in the works, one that's currently rolling out in beta form to a small audience playing Battlefield 4 before being made available to Battlefield 1 and Battlefield Hardline as well. The new UI is supposed to make playing with friends easier. You'll be able to create a squad before you even enter a game, along with have the ability to switch between Battlefield titles. The revamped UI will also help ensure that you're able to spawn on your buddies as soon as you're in game, saving you... Read more...
If it's varied styles of combat you're after, Battlefield 1 might be the title you've been waiting for. Electronics Arts brought along a trailer of the World War 1 shooter being developed by DICE to E3, which starts off with ground warfare showing soldiers hopping into tanks and storming through towns on foot. While this is going on, biplanes whiz by overhead shooting at one another before taking down a zeppelin later in the trailer. It's noted in a separate video showing an hour of gameplay footage that when the zeppelin finally succumbs to gunfire, it catches fire and comes crashing down on top of houses in the field of play. There's no predetermined path that's conveniently out of the way,... Read more...
Exactly one month ago today, Dice took the veil off of the next major Battlefield title. The oddly-named Battlefield 1 will take a break from more futuristic combat to bring us way back to the World War I era. While World War II-styled games used to be poked fun at due to the sheer amount available, it seems now is the right time to give ourselves a new-age WW1 experience. To say that the hype surrounding this game is huge would be an understatement. While we've learned the hard lesson of not putting our complete faith into launch trailers, Battlefield 1's was so good that even if it doesn't live up 100% it should still be an incredible game. Save the date - A new #Battlefield 1 trailer is coming... Read more...
The Xbox One, PC, and Playstation 4 are definitely not all quiet on the western front. The Battlefield 1 trailer was just released and it is big, bad, and beautiful. Yesterday the concept art was leaked, but today we get the full trailer. The game is set in an alternate universe filled with WWI-era trench warfare, naval battles, and of course Zeppelins. EA Games and DICE stated, “With Battlefield 1 we set out to create some of the largest create, most dynamic battles in FPS history while continuing to tap into what fans love most about the franchise. One of the things that makes World War I such an amazing era is just how advanced it really was. Almost everything that you know about the... Read more...
Battlefield 5 was the expected name of DICE and Electronic Arts’ latest shooter, but a new leak just ahead of the game’s office debut reveals that this isn’t the case at all. In fact, DICE has turned the clock back to Battlefield 1. While Call of Duty is delving further into the depths of space with Infinite Warfare (to the horror of series veterans), the latest edition of Battlefield is going back in time to World War 1. But this isn’t a completely historic representation of the first world war -- according to various reports, Battlefield 1 is set in an alternate universe. We should expect to see some laborious trench warfare, up close and personal attacks on opponents (just look at the trench... Read more...
Brace yourself, Battlefield 5's world premier is coming. In the meantime, go ahead and grab your detective cap, you're going to need it. In anticipation of today's world premier, which is scheduled for 4PM Eastern (1PM Pacific), DICE and Electronic Arts have taken to social media to tease eager gamers with clues about the Battlefield 5, including an extremely short video. The clip is less than 10 seconds long and you have to look very closely for subtle hints. All you see is the neck up of a rendered soldier with detailed facial features, including dirt and the pits of his skin. It's an impressive visual, one that's labeled as "game engine footage," not to be confused with in-game footage. Take... Read more...
With all due respect, if watching the official launch trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront doesn't get you pumped for the game's release next month, you might not have a pulse. Seriously, we think it's even listed as a warning sign for a zombie related disease in WebMD. That also means the pressure is on developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts to deliver an epic multiplayer experience that lives up to the pre-release hype. Though the newest Battlefront title will be the third in the series, it's not a sequel to the previous versions, but a reboot. You'll play from either a first-person or third-person perspective (you can switch at any time) as a Rebel Alliance soldier or an Imperial Stormtrooper.... Read more...
There were lots of juicy bits at this year's E3 convention, among them a full five minutes of actual gameplay footage from the third installment in the Star Wars Battlefront series. What makes this trailer so exciting is that the gameplay is plucked from a PlayStation 4, as opposed to renders made with the game engine or cutscenes that don't actually depict gameplay graphics. It's a wild five-minute ride filled with TIE fighters, X-Wings (which you get to fly, by the way), AT-ATs, AT-STs, rebel troopers, stormtrooopers, lasers, lightsabers, and, well, you get the point. When the finished product ships, you'll be able to join the Empire and accompany AT-AT walkers as they march... Read more...
Battlefield 4 may be 18-months-old at this point, but DICE has made it clear that it has no intention of halting the production of new content. On its way in the near-future are two night maps, a community map, some new weapons, and even a new game mode called Gunmaster. The question that's been on many BF4 player's minds has been, "But is it free?", and BF4Central confirms that it is indeed free. For a game like BF4 which has as much paid add-on content as it does, this is great to see. The upcoming night maps feature will introduce night versions of Siege of Shanghai, Zavod 311, and Golmud Railway, and as the screenshots below highlight, they'll add some incredible atmosphere to the game -... This has been a tremendous week for Star Wars fans. First we got to see Han Solo and Chewbacca make an emotional appearance in the newest Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer (the second official trailer Disney has put out) and now Electronic Arts is treating us to a visual smorgasbord of cinema-quality footage showing the forthcoming Star Wars Battlefront game. Had you not known it was a game, it would be easy to mistake the trailer for an upcoming movie. Instead, you're seeing actual game engine footage of the multiplayer shooter, which was unveiled Friday at Star Wars Celebration, an annual convention celebrating one of the most popular science fiction franchises of all time. I don't know... Read more...
Ever since it launched last year, Battlefield 4 has been practically synonymous with how not to launch a major entry to a beloved online franchise. Finally, some of the major flaws are being repaired -- or at least, they've been fixed on the beta Community Test Environment (CTE) server. This is the new server system Dice has set up for PC players that subscribe to Battlefield Premium and they've been rolling out new game changes over the past week. One of the major changes coming to BF4 is an increase in what's called the "tickrate." The term refers to how often the game updates the location of objects and players. In BF4, the tickrate has been just 10Hz, or 10x per second, compared to 30Hz in... Read more...
As one of the most anticipated games of the year, Battlefield 4 also has the distinction of being one of the most buggy releases, and that's regardless of platform. Even worse, Electronic Arts and DICE can't seem to catch a break. To wit, there's a new patch available for the PC version, and the main reason it exists is to fix a bunch of issues introduced in a previous update. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back! Those of you wielding multiple graphics cards will be happy to know that the latest patch issues a fix for terrain flickering when running BF4 on a SLI or CrossFire configured system. Applying the patch is also supposed to resolve "three of the top crash issues on the... Read more...
The suits on Wall Street took notice of rumors that Electronic Arts had put a freeze on DICE from working on future projects such as Star Wars: Battlefront and a new Mirror's Edge title due to ongoing problems with Battlefield 4. EA shares dipped more than 8 percent as reports of halted production pranced through cyberspace. In a statement to Polygon, an EA spokesperson earlier this week acknowledged that there's much work to be done to fix Battlefield 4's persistent problems. "The team at DICE is working non-stop to update the game. Since Battlefield 4 China Rising expansion pack was already in the final states of development by the time issues began with Battlefield 4, we decided to fulfill... Read more...
The hits have been coming (and coming, and coming) from AMD’s Hawaiian press event today, and here’s one more.  AMD has also announced Mantle, a “low-level high-performance console-style” graphics API for the PC. Mantle will ostensibly allow developers to work “closer to the metal”, like they do with console GPUs. And wouldn’t you know it--it’s AMD GPUs that will be powering ALL next generation consoles, so the whole concept flows out of AMD’s experience with both consoles and PCs. AMD’s angle is that PC graphics present several challenges that hamstring both performance and programmability. For instance, you have to support a huge... Read more...
Battlefield fans, rejoice: EA has just announced a couple of dates worth paying attention to. On October 1, the company will launch the game's open beta, affecting the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. By all appearances, no pre-order is required to gain access. As previously planned, the game will launch on October 29. Along with this news, EA has also revealed the street dates for this game and others (FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25) for next-gen consoles: November 19th for Xbox One (21st for Europe), and November 12th for PlayStation 4 (29th for Europe). As we covered last month, Battlefield 4 is one of EA's titles that qualifies for $10 upgrade pricing if you happen to want to pick up the game for... Read more...
Sure, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, which was built on the Frostbite 3 game engine, looks great, but it’s nothing compared to the Frostbite 3 engine-equipped Battlefield 4. In a YouTube video, gamemaker DICE and Frostbite developers discuss the breath-taking features of the game engine with scenes from Battlefield 4, and it’s the kind of thing that makes you want to put your chin in your hands, sigh dreamily, and watch in awe. In an effort to offer realism and believability, the Frostbite 3 engine handles features such as trees swaying in the breeze; the game engine produces “weather”, and the rules of the weather affect the movement of the trees, the ocean, and...
