It is easy to take for granted that our premium-designed smartphones just work as expected, and won't fall apart like some cheap gadget picked up from the clearance bin at the local thrift shop. And for the most part, they do dutifully operate to expectations. It takes a lot of design chops and testing to achieve the kind of durability necessary for daily use, and providing a rare glimpse of what goes into the latter, Samsung has partially lifted the curtain to reveal some of its testing procedures. Companies don't often provide behind-the-scene looks at how the sausage is made. Or in this case, how it is deemed ready for public consumption. Samsung chose the perfect time to make an exception,... Read more...
It’s been a mixed year for Samsung when it comes to smartphone sales. The company launched the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in January 2021, but sales have been lackluster. According to research from Counterpoint Research, Galaxy S21 family sales were down 20 percent through its first six months compared to the Galaxy S20, making it the slowest-selling release since the Galaxy S5 in 2014. However, things are looking more positive for Samsung regarding its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. These are Samsung’s third-generation folding smartphones, and early reports already indicated that the devices came charging out of the starting gate. Now, a new report from The... Read more...
It took a few generations, but the folding smartphone form factor has come into its own and appears to be drawing greater interest. One could argue that it has achieved mainstream status. It just depends on if the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 sales momentum in Samsung's native land can carry over to other territories. These are fine handsets, even if they are not perfect. In our Galaxy Z Fold 3 review, we noted there is a visible crease down the center of the main display, which can either be a non-issue or somewhat distracting, depending on how it is being utilized, and the user. Battery life in our testing was only so-so, and it's an expensive phone. But otherwise, the form factor works... Read more...
Samsung has been refining its innovative foldable phone line-up for a couple of years now. While the first iteration of the company's Galaxy Z Fold may not have been terribly robust out in the wild, last year's follow up was by most accounts a solid device. This year, the newest Galaxy Z Fold3 5G seems to have it all: a malleable 7.6" screen, more durable construction, Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 5G Mobile Platform, and enough memory and storage to keep the Galaxy Z Fold3 viable for a long time to come.  There are many questions we wanted to answer with this device. What's it like to carry around? Does the foldable nature of the main display feel strange under our fingertips? What... Read more...
Samsung recently launched its third-generation foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 -- and they’re very impressive. The cheapest of the two is the Galaxy Z Flip 3, priced from $999 compared to the $1,449 launch price of its predecessor. Even though the smartphone has only been on the market for a few weeks, Amazon is already discounting the Galaxy Z Flip 3 by a fair amount. Amazon’s discount comes in at $75, which takes the smartphone down to just $924.99 with free shipping. The discounted pricing is available for Phantom Black, Lavender, Cream, and Green colors. Two years ago, Samsung ushered the era of folding phones with the daring (but ultimately flawed) Galaxy Fold. In 2020, the company followed suit with three much improved foldables -- the stylish Galaxy Z Flip, Z Flip 5G, and the powerful Galaxy Z Fold2. With most of the kinks worked out (pun intended), these excellent handsets were finally worth recommending, though cost and durability were still obstacles for many. But things are different today. Samsung’s new water-resistant $1800 GalaxyZ Fold3 and $1000 Galaxy Z Flip3 are more affordable and life-proof than ever. While the Fold series transform from a phone into a small tablet, the Flip models are basically standard handsets that... Read more...
It looks as though Samsung has a hit on its hands with its latest folding Android smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. As their names imply, these are third-generation folding phones. Hence they bring a bevy of functionality and usability benefits over their predecessors. Most importantly, pricing is trending down for the smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is $200 cheaper than its predecessor (now starting at $1,799), while the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has dropped a staggering $450 to just $999. According to The Korea Herald, home market preorders for the two smartphones combined reached 450,000 units as of Sunday. However, according to industry sources, that figure could top 800,000... It's no secret that Samsung plans to launch its new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphone later today. The devices have been making the rounds in leaked form for months and are highly anticipated by smartphone enthusiasts. However, OnePlus is apparently looking to make some waves of its own with a folding smartphone, as witnessed by emails and posts that went out yesterday. In a video teaser posted to Instagram, we see OnePlus' take on folding smartphones, which appears to take a page from LG's playbook. However, it seems as though OnePlus is using a OnePlus 9 Pro (or perhaps a garden variety OnePlus 9) with an accessory case that adds a second display. So, in essence, we're looking... Read more...
In just a little over a week from now, Samsung will unveil a handful of new devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Flip 3, and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. There may not be a whole lot in the way of surprises, though. That is because the leaks and rumors scene surrounding the upcoming launches has been especially active, with the latest chatter centered on pricing. Of course, we will have to wait for Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event for official confirmation on pricing. That will take place on August 11, 2021. Ahead of the event, however, notorious leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) has posted what pricing will look like in Europe. As expected, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip... Earlier this month, we brought you a lengthy preview of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event, which will take place next month. At the time, the rumors indicated that the event would take place on August 11th, and tonight, Samsung confirmed that date and a start time of 11 am ET. This will be one of Samsung's biggest launch events in recent memory, with multiple smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds on the agenda. However, the biggest launch will be the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which we've seen leak on numerous occasions at this point. Speaking of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung has already opened up its Reserve Now program for its "next flagship." With Reserve Now, early preorder customers can take advantage... Read more...
We all know that Samsung is planning an Unpacked event for this summer to announce its latest crop of consumer electronics devices. Over the past few weeks, we've seen some substantial leaks of the Galaxy Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, over the weekend, famed leaker Evan Blass struck the motherlode and released animated gifs of every product Samsung plans to launch. These GIFs show the devices from every possible angle in multiple colors. Galaxy Z Fold 3 The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is perhaps the most stunning device that will launch with its large folding display and tall/skinny cover display. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, this new iteration has three cameras on the back along... Read more...
We've discussed leaks about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 for months. The current generation Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Z Flip 5G are perhaps the most high-profile folding smartphones on the planet, so their successors are highly anticipated. Luckily for us, we've just been presented with the first official renders of the smartphones. We are confident that these are official because they come from none other than gadget leaker Evan Blass. And if Blass is going to take the time to tweet an image, you know that his sourcing is ironclad. Looking at the first image, we see the Galaxy Z Fold 3 from the front and the back. From the front, we can see that the bezels around the folding... Read more...
Samsung will eventually get around to unveiling its Galaxy Fold 3 (and Z Flip 3), as recently leaked marketing images revealed. Unfortunately, those images were some of the lowest quality pictures we have ever seen, and did not provide a crystal clear look of the upcoming phone's details. That said, a recently published patent application hints that a surprising design decision may accompany the Galaxy Fold 3—say goodbye to physical buttons. Well, maybe the physical buttons are going away, or maybe Samsung is toying with the idea for some other handset down the line. Either way, Samsung spent 110 pages describing a "foldable electronic device" that replaces the power, volume, and other... Read more...
Samsung is known in enthusiast circles for its Galaxy smartphones, Windows 10 PCs, memory, and SSD products, but the company is also a major player in display panels. Not only does Samsung make the displays that go into its own devices, but it also supplies panels to competitors like Apple. Today, Samsung Display is giving us a sneak peek at its next-generation displays that will likely be featured in its future products. The displays were part of the Display Week 2021 expo and included several exciting design choices like the S-Foldable. The S-Foldable is a bi-folding OLED display that Samsung says can fold inside and out. In its fully folded state, a device could function as a traditional smartphone.... Read more...
The inevitable Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will soon be upon us from Samsung. Samsung launched its second-generation folding smartphones last year, and this year's crop of third-generation devices is highly anticipated. Images of both the Galaxy Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 have appeared in what looks to be leaked marketing materials from Samsung. While the photos look like they were taken with a potato phone that had Vaseline smeared on its lens, we do get a relatively good look at the rear camera module for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 with three sensors arranged vertically. Galaxy Z Fold 3 But the rear cameras aren't the most exciting thing here; the marketing materials confirm that the Galaxy Z Fold... Read more...
Samsung was among the first to bring a foldable smartphone to the consumer market with its original Galaxy Fold and then followed up with devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and Galaxy Z Fold 2. The latter is currently Samsung's largest device with a flexible display, measuring 7.6 inches across when unfolded. However, according to a new report, Samsung plans a folding device much larger than the Galaxy Z Fold. The Galaxy Z Fold Tab is reportedly in the pipeline for Samsung and will employ a tri-folding display. The display will allegedly be covered in the latest version of Samsung's Ultra-Thin Glass, which will hopefully be even more durable than the current iteration. It will also likely support... Back in August, Samsung revealed the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which was a much-improved follow-up to the problematic, first-generation Galaxy Fold. Given that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has been on the market for a few months, there is already talk about its inevitable successor, and there are new rumors streaming in about what kind of features it will have. South Korean news organization Ajou News claims that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in June, which is a few months earlier than its predecessor. According to the report, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will feature S Pen support, which is something that we've heard in previous leaks. There will also reportedly be a silo incorporated into the...
