We have seen major OEMs tinker with drivers and system settings for workarounds and various fixes in games and other apps before. And now that AMD is firmly back in the mainstream desktop processor race, the company is occasionally under the microscope with power users and developers that stumble onto similar patch type efforts. In that regard, it appears Ryzen systems may pose a potential cause for concern. A researcher has found a seemingly disguised AMD driver toggling certain system behaviors when it detects a list of games, which could open the door to security vulnerabilities and other issues. This past Saturday, security researcher and Windows Internals expert Alex Ionescu was working... Read more...
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) has been going strong since 2012, regularly hitting the “Top Games By Current Player Count” list on Steam. With this thriving community, it could make for a great opportunity to try and hack players through the game, and it seems that is indeed a potential threat. Researchers recently found a way to get reliable remote code execution on players’ computers just by joining a malicious community server. The Secret Club is a group of like-minded hackers and researchers who believe in open research about security, reverse engineering malware, and game hacking. Concerning the last part about game hacking, it seems they targeted CS:GO due to... Read more...
Heads up console gamers, if you own an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, are part of the Xbox Insider program, and are subscribed to the alpha ring, there is a new update available that enables playing games in the Dolby Vision HDR format. Microsoft is hoping to solicit feedback and stomp out any bugs before rolling out support broadly later this year. This is something that was announced last year, before the consoles came out. The plan was always to bring Dolby Vision support to both of Microsoft's newest generation Xbox consoles by the end of this year, though precisely when is still not known. However, the fact that it is actively being tested in the Xbox Insider program suggests it is close.... Read more...
Some people are concerned about games like GTA 5 affecting peoples' behavior in real life, but what if those games actually looked like real life? Researchers at Intel Labs may have figured out how to do just that using machine learning to make rendered footage look photorealistic. This technology could just bring gaming into a new era if it is used in the wild. Since the dawn of video games, people have been trying to make them as realistic as possible to achieve the most immersive experience. PC and console hardware has grown over time as well, which nicely complements this goal. Take, for example, the Tomb Raider games, the original of which looks to us more like a Cubism art piece versus... Read more...
Back in The Day, figuring out which PC processor was better for gaming was a matter of architecture and clock speed. More megahertz on a fast CPU architecture generally also meant that the CPU would be better for a whole host of tasks, in addition to games, versus a lower clocked chip. An Intel Pentium II 450 MHz was faster than a Pentium II 366 MHz, and there wasn't much debate about that. First AMD, and later Intel, broke away from this simple equation by creating model families and tiers within those families. Multi-core CPUs were born, integrating two (or more) independent processor cores on a single chip, but certainly not all games were multi-processor aware. These days, just about... Read more...
Leaks pertaining to Intel's upcoming Alder Lake-S processors are piled up a mile high at this point, and they keep on coming. The latest one highlights an engineering sample that made a benchmark run in the free-to-play Dota 2 game, alongside an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card and DDR5 memory running at 4,800MHz. Alder Lake-S, as most of you reading this know by know, is a hybrid (or heterogeneous) architecture that will pair high performance cores with power efficient cores on the same slice of silicon. It's similar in concept to Arm's big.LITTLE approach, though very different in design—Alder Lake-S is very much a x86 CPU architecture. We've seen a bunch of leaks surrounding Alder... Read more...

Back in February, Sony shared the first details of its next-generation virtual reality system that is headed to the PlayStation 5, but stopped far short of serving up any juicy nuggets. Sony said the next-gen model will enhance the resolution, tracking, and input, and connect with a single cable. Fast forward to today and some interesting details have emerged from the rumor mill. As the PSVR 2 gets closer to launch, Sony has reportedly shared a few specifics with its partners. It is said the PSVR 2 will get a resolution upgrade to 4000x2040 pixels, or 2000x2040 per eyeball. That would give it one of the highest resolutions among consumer VR headsets. Here's how it compares to some other models...... Read more...

GTA 6 rumors seem to be popping up and disappearing just as quickly, like the recent news about Rockstar hiring game testers for GTA 6 or any other game the company is working on. Since 2018, it seems that the new map, or at least part of it, may have been leaked online, giving us a glimpse into GTA 6 and what it will look like. Over the last couple of years, four images have been leaked, showing what appears to be a map with a larger landmass with smaller surrounding islands. Reports are that the first image showed an incomplete overview of the map, with the larger island having some things drawn in while other islands were entirely drawn in. The newest leak fills out the missing portion... Read more...
Google Stadia is an easy way to access and play many games, from virtually anywhere via the cloud, provided you do not have a powerful PC or console on hand. And it appears the service is getting better as Stadia for Android is preparing something called “bridge mode”, which will allow gamers to use their smartphones or other connected devices as a controller to play games on a TV. As Stadia version 3.15 begins to roll out through the Google Play store, a new feature called “bridge mode” has been spotted. As it stands, if you want to play games on Stadia using a Chromecast Ultra, you can only use a Google-made Stadia controller that works over Wi-Fi. With the bridge mode... Read more...

If you've had your eyes on the GPD Win 3 handheld gaming PC ever since it was first unveiled back in November 2020, we've got some good news for you. The portable gaming device is now available for preorder on Amazon, with an estimated release date of June 2nd. The GPD Win 3 has captured so much attention due to its small form-factor, which looks like a cross between a Nintendo Switch and an old Sony Vaio UX UMPC. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the device is its 5.5-inch display, which slides upward to reveal a dainty backlit QWERTY keyboard for input. The integrated hardware keyboard allows you to input text on the go without the need for an on-screen keyboard (which would be cumbersome... Read more...
In late April, Microsoft’s Discord acquisition dreams were dashed after talks came to a screeching halt. Though any hopes of a buyout were gone, Discord was still looking for funding evidently, as it has now been announced the Sony and Discord are new partners. Perhaps this is a way to make Microsoft jealous, but it seems to be a solidly beneficial partnership, nonetheless. Back in 2015, Discord was created by founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, who sought a way to keep in touch with friends made over the internet. They believed they could make a better service that was not “slow, unreliable, and complex,” and thus Discord was born. Since then, gamers have taken it up... Read more...
In February, Microsoft unveiled FPS Boost, a new way to revive older games with lower frame rates. Initially, the Xbox team gave a select few games the performance enhancing treatment, and then some Bethesda games followed later after the Microsoft acquisition was complete. Now, the company is bringing the FPS boost love to another 70 titles in the “largest drop of games featuring FPS Boost to date.” FPS Boost is a user-adjustable setting to make older games “visually smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay.” For the most part, it can nearly double frame rates on select titles when the game engine adapted to render things more quickly. To accomplish this impressive... Read more...
Do you feel that breeze? It is a shift in the winds of gaming, spurred by Microsoft's decision to join Epic Games in allowing game developers to keep a bigger share of revenue. Following last week's announcement that Microsoft is going to slash its cut of PC game sales to just 12 percent (down from 30 percent), court documents in the Epic Games lawsuit against Apple reveal the same reduced royalty rate is also headed to the Microsoft Store on Xbox. This is a big deal, and assuming there are no strings attached, just as none exist on the PC side, the 88/12 split of revenue will apply no matter how many sales a particular game achieves. This is in contrast to Apple's reduced 15 percent royalty... Read more...
More than four years after it came out, Titanfall 2 maintains an 'Overwhelmingly Positive' rating on Steam, both in all-time reviews and in recent evaluations (it arrived on Steam a little more recently, though, in June 2020). Did you miss out on the game when it released in 2016? Well, now is your chance to jump in at no cost—it is free to play right now, and will stay that way throughout the weekend. The free-to-play period has already begun and lasts until May 3rd at 10:00 am PT (1:00 pm ET). Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but why focus on a game that came out around four and a half years ago? It's a fun game, for one—see our Titanfall 2 review. There has been a big spike... In terms of PR and gamer experience, Cyberpunk 2077 flopped out of the gate with a plague of glitches and multiple undelivered features. On the other side of the equation, the game still made quite a bit of money for CD Projekt Red, even in the face of game returns and Sony refusing to sell the game on its platform. Now, the company executives who pushed this game out the door will receive millions in bonuses, while the developers at the grindstone will get significantly less. Top executives of gaming companies receiving massive bonuses while the employees on the floor get by with less is something of a recurring issue. In March, we reported on Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick possibly getting... Read more...
Let's say you splurged on a ginormous 49-inch monitor like AOC's fast and wide Agon AG493UCX, which offers a 5120x1440 resolution and 32:9 aspect ratio. Well, guess what? Microsoft revealed that Halo Infinite will natively support such ultrawide displays when the game launches this year, and it teased a few amazing looking screenshots. In the image above, for example, you can see what one of the scenes looks like on a 32:9 display compared to a 21:9 monitor, and if you click to enlarge it, there's also a 16:9 comparison. It is super expansive, and is part of an effort to build a "native, first-class PC experience" so players who game on PC do not feel like an afterthought to their console brethren.... Read more...
GTA 6 has been on the horizon for some time, and there have been rumors left and right about the upcoming game from Rockstar. Though the company has not announced nor confirmed anything yet, we could be getting closer to a launch of the much-anticipated game. Rockstar North, out of Edinburgh, is in charge of Grand Theft Auto development, and they are hiring a new game tester alongside other interesting positions. Rockstar's website lists 18 different job positions currently available for applicants, including the rather interesting game tester role. Diving into the position, Rockstar is looking for people with "Knowledge of current generation games consoles and PCs" and who have "Competent gaming... Read more...
We are no strangers to Alienware’s Aurora line of gaming PCs here at HotHardware. In fact, we have reviewed many Aurora systems over the years, and for good reason. Aurora desktops embody the essence of a powerful, mainstream prebuilt rig, with semi-custom, almost boutique styling, in a manner that makes them more attainable for the masses. Yet, every time we receive an Aurora in for review, it has something added we have not seen in the family before and this Aurora R10 Ryzen Edition is no exception. Strictly speaking, this is also not the first time we have had an Aurora R10 Ryzen Edition in our lab. Back in 2019, we tested Alienware’s first Ryzen-imbued iteration which housed a... Read more...
