AMD processors that were originally intended for Microsoft's Xbox Series X consoles may have found their way to resellers in China. Or perhaps AMD is building a new CPU for select markets. Either way, a mysterious AMD 4700S part has found its way to the wild, as part of a custom mini-ITX form factor gaming build. What exactly is this previously unknown part? it first showed up around a month ago, in a Geekbench 5 listing, which pegged it as being an 8-core/16-thread processor with a 3.6GHz base clock and 4GHz boost clock. The benchmark listing also pointed to 8MB of L3 cache. Have a look... Click to Enlarge (Source: Geekbench) Notice that the full name is "AMD 4700S Desktop Kit" in the benchmark... Read more...
A recent Windows 10 update has some gamers fuming over crippled frame rates and blue screen of death (BSOD) errors—it is related to this month's Patch Tuesday update, which began rolling out to PCs on April 12. Now a couple of weeks later, Microsoft has acknowledged the problem, found the culprit, and is somewhat stealthily pushing out a fix (more on that in a moment). "A small subset of users have reported lower than expected performance in games after installing this update. Most users affected by this issue are running games full screen or borderless windowed modes and using two or more monitors," Microsoft explains in a support article. The issue is related to KB5001330 for Windows... Read more...
If you want to step back in time and play some retro games for nostalgia, it can be more difficult than it needs to be. Moreover, you do not get the fun of playing with friends on the same screen as everything is now done over the web. Evercade has decided to go against the grain and take the hassle out of emulation and allow up to four friends to play games in person with a brand new console announced today. Last year, we covered the Evercade Handheld, an ultra-small and portable console that allowed users to play their favorite retro games anywhere. Of course, you still needed to bring your game cartridges with you, but it would not be much fun nor nostalgic if you just had a silly little SD... Read more...
Cyberpunk 2077 may not have lived up to the monumental hype preceding its launch, because when it did arrive, it came with too many bugs and performance issues. CD Projekt Red still managed to sell 13.7 million copies of the game, however, and despite a refund campaign, the game sold exceptionally well. It was also a boon for CDPR's overall finances in 2020—the developer raked in more than half a billion dollars last year. Full-year revenue came to nearly 2.14 billion Polish Zloty (PLN), which at the current exchange rate is worth around $567 million in US currency. That amounts to a more than fourfold increase in annual revenue compared to 2019, and according to CDPR, the "dynamic growth... Read more...
Given the difficulty in finding a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S in stock, you have time to decide which one is the right game console for you. One of the factors that could play a role in that decision is what the exclusive game landscape looks like. Not every game gets released on every platform, and Sony's goal is to release more exclusive games on PS5 than any previous PlayStation console. As part of that effort, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Jim Ryan said the company has been "steadily investing" in first-party software for the PS5, but has not been making a lot of noise about it. "We have been quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will... Read more...
Today's dedicated game consoles share a whole bunch of DNA with their PC brethren, such as Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2 graphics hardware, with support for real-time ray tracing. In addition to sharing hardware characteristics, AMD today announced it is making available its FidelityFX family of effects to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. AMD's announcement is great for a couple of reasons. One of them is easier cross-platform coding, with FidelityFX now being injected into AMD's Game Developer Kit (GDK) for the Xbox Series X/S. It should also be noted that these are highly optimized, open source tools that developers are free to modify, and now available across PC and console. "This news makes... Read more...
Sometimes you have to step back and not take life so serious, as challenging as that might be with everything going on these days. In an effort to help, Google is providing a "bit of escapism" by injecting pop culture characters into its search service, brought to virtual life on your smartphone or tablet through the wonders of augmented reality. It's a silly little thing, but we all need a little bit of silliness from time to time, don't we? To that end, Google is focusing on a handful of characters from classic Japanese anime, games, and TV shows. Characters that are viewable in AR include Evangelion, Hello Kitty, Gomora, Gundam, Pac-Man (shown above), and Ultraman. "Now, you can have these... Read more...
Earlier today, we reported on DNS issues with the latest Patch Tuesday update (KB5001330 and 1337), and the Windows 10 pain train does not seem to be slowing down. Users are now reporting a variety of gaming-related issues such as unstable frame rates and game stutters.  Earlier this week, Reddit user /u/m4dden posted to the Windows 10 subreddit that he was facing numerous issues while trying to play games. These included stuttering, unstable FPS, broken VSync, and FPS drops when sharing games in Discord calls with screen share. After he uninstalled the new patch, the issues seemed to all disappear, making Windows 10 the culprit. There are 72 comments on the post at the time of writing,... Read more...
We have bad news for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings franchise. Remember the Lord of the Rings MMORPG that Amazon Game Studios announced it was co-developing two years ago? Sadly, the project has been cancelled, with Lord of the Rings becoming the latest casualty from Amazon's troubled game studio. Amazon revealed in October 2019 that it was working with Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited and Middle-earth Enterprises on the Lord of the Rings MMO. It promised to give fans a "new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the vast world of Tolkien," with versions planned for both PC and game consoles. "The collaboration brings together Amazon’s game technology and talented... Read more...
In December 2020, we reported that EA swooped in and purchased Codemasters in a $1.2 billion mega-deal. This gave EA access to a quite healthy racing game portfolio, but there was concern at the time that the purchase could negatively affect consumers. It appears that EA did not waste any time with shenanigans affecting Codemasters games, however, as regional prices for F1 2021 could double or even triple that of F1 2020. Yesterday, Twitter user @RobotBrush posted a chart putting the global pricing for F1 2020 and F1 2021 side by side. It shows that countries such as China will face a 1.5x increase in price, whereas other places like India will receive a 2.7x price hike. Argentina is stuck with... Read more...
CD Projekt Red continues to stomp out bugs in Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most hyped and highly anticipated games of 2020, which unfortunately could have benefited from several more coats of polish before it released. It gets another coat of polish today, as well as a commitment from CDPR to work on improving the game in hopes it will sell for several years. First let's talk about the latest patch. Hotfix version 1.21 is mostly focused on further improving the overall stability of the game, in addition to fixing what CDPR says are the most most common issues that could potentially block a player's progression in the game. It gets rid of some show-stopping gameplay bugs, in other words. It's a... Read more...
Epic Games is a massive company, but we already knew that between their battle against Apple and the ability to throw money to the wind with the Epic Games Store and free games. The behemoth gaming company is still chugging forward, though, with a new $1 billion round of funding and an equity valuation of $28.7 billion. This new round of funding, which was announced on Epic's website today, includes Sony Group Corporation, which invested $200 million. Besides Sony, there were also investments from "Appaloosa, Baillie Gifford, Fidelity Management & Research Company LLC, GIC, funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, funds and accounts... Read more...
It has been around five months since the PlayStation 5 came out, and for those who have been lucky enough to acquire one—the PS5 is in short supply, like the Xbox Series X/S and various PC hardware—Sony is now readying its first major system software update. With it comes expanded storage compatibility. More specifically, the update enables storing PS5 games on external USB drives, essentially giving players a way to expand their console's built-in storage allotment. After applying the update, PS5 owners will be able to transfer games from the console's internal solid state drive (SSD) over to an external storage device, or the other way around. Sony also notes that is faster to reinstall... Read more...
PowerColor has historically released its high-end, customized Red Devil-branded Radeons in lock-step with AMD. AMD launches a new GPU with one set of specifications, and a short time later, board partners like PowerColor come through with tweaked versions injected with their own special sauce. On the surface, that’s how today’s launch of the PowerColor Red Devil Ultimate Radeon RX 6900 XT also went down, but there is some additional mojo at play here. PowerColor already has a “non-Ultimate” Red Devil 6900 XT in its line-up, but the Red Devil Ultimate Radeon RX 6900 XT takes things to the next level. The silicon on this card has been specially binned to ensure stability... Read more...
Battlefield 3 and 4 were some of the most recent beloved Battlefield titles, but when the franchise went back to historical roots with Battlefield 5 and 1, some fans were left disappointed. With Battlefield 6 on the horizon, those same fans are hopeful of returning to the modern era of combat, and they may get just that if recent leaks are anything to go by. Levolution To A Whole New Level Introduced in Battlefield 4, Levolution was the concept that game-changing events would occur on a timed basis or through player action. For example, the Battlefield 4 map Siege of Shanghai featured a skyscraper that could eventually topple, effectively changing the map and capture points in the capture-the-flag... Read more...
Perhaps "apes together strong," but monkeys with Neuralink embedded in their brains maybe even stronger. When Neuralink was shown off in August of last year, it was a rather impressive technology which we could not wait to see where it went, even if it was slightly creepy. Since then, it seems many experiments have been done, and Elon Musk's company has progressed to testing on monkeys who can now play video games with just their mind. Using the brain scanning functionality of the Neuralink implant along with wireless capabilities, the Link could send data from any animal from their brain to a computer. After some training and decoding work on the transmitted data, the computer can then... Read more...

One glance is all it takes to figure out Lenovo has ASUS in its sights with its new Legion Phone Duel 2, a high-powered gaming phone with similar specifications and features as the ROG Phone 5. What exactly constitutes a gaming phone, anyway? It starts with the flagship hardware, like Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 SoC, but these companies have figured out it takes more than just top-end specs. Not that either phone is lacking in premium components. The Snapdragon 888 is the best consumer chipset on tap from Qualcomm right now, with eight Kryo CPU cores (one clocked at 2.84GHz, three clocked at 2.42GHz, and four clocked at 1.8GHz) and an Adreno 660 GPU running at 840MHz. It is the chipset of choice... Read more...

Battle Royale games are some of the most popular out there right now, with popular titles such as Fortnite and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds. Since these games came out, companies have been trying to twist the genre, and Nintendo is the latest to shake things up. In the new Pac-Man 99, players can show off their “chomping chops” against up to 99 other players simultaneously. When you think of the typical battle royale game, you may think of all the players being in the same lobby and competing in the same location. With Pac-Man 99, however, players play on their Pac-Man maze while trying to mess up opponents via power-ups and be the last Pac-Man standing. You can see how... Read more...
On-demand games are becoming one of the best ways to enjoy various titles without having to buy them. PlayStation Now is a solid service for PlayStation users to trial some new games or replay some old ones. This week, Sony is adding three games to the platform to make it that much more enticing, and you can start playing right now. Marvel’s Avengers The first game added to the docket is Marvel’s Avengers, an “epic, third-person, action-adventure game that combines an original, cinematic story with single-player and co-operative gameplay.” The game surrounds a future where Super Heroes are outlawed (not unlike The Incredibles), and Kamala Khan must reassemble the Avengers... Tobii head and eye tracking can be an incredible add-on that can improve immersion while gaming. The only issue is that the traditional eye-tracking bar from Tobii can be cost-prohibitive for some people, especially if they just built or bought a new PC. In response to this, Lenovo is now working with Tobii to implement head tracking into the Lenovo Legion 7 gaming laptop releasing later this year. Using Tobii Aware technology, Tobii Horizon is a new PC application “that leverages sensor data from the laptop’s in-built web camera to deliver highly accurate head tracking for enhanced game immersion and simulation experiences.” The tech offers six degrees of freedom head tracking...
