The 17th update to No Man's Sky has arrived, right on the heels of the procedurally generated game's fifth anniversary. Teased last month, the 3.6 "Frontiers" update is a monumentally big one, requiring a 6.6GB download on Steam, and as you might expect, it crams a whole lot of upgrades, new features, and bug fixes into the update. Getting to 17 updates was not always a foregone conclusion, certainly not when No Man's Sky first released five years ago. The game tripped over itself at the outset, bringing with it numerous bugs and performance issues, and feeling incomplete despite four years of development. But to the credit of developer Hello Games, it has remained a work in progress and is vastly... Read more...
As enthusiasts, we're often most enamored by the latest and greatest graphics cards, processors, and storage technology in our endeavors to squeeze as much performance from our systems as possible. However, it is the human interface devices -- like our keyboards, mice, and monitors -- that can have the most significant impact on our user experience. A high-quality keyboard and mouse, for example, can make you more productive, reduce fatigue, and even improve your gaming chops. So, when EVGA offered up their upcoming X20 and X15 gaming mice and Z12 RGB keyboard, we were eager to take a look. After daily driving the peripherals for over a week, it is safe to say that EVGA's latest offerings are... Read more...
As video game streaming from the cloud becomes more prominent, Google is tinkering with the inner workings of its Chrome browser that could potentially benefit the medium. Some of those tweaks are being tested in the Chrome 94 beta, available to try out now for Android, Chrome OS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. One of the challenges with game streaming is dealing with latency. Today's services have gotten better about it, but there is still room for improvement. That is one of the areas Google is looking to address on the browser side of the equation, as far as in-browser game streaming goes. And specifically, with the WebCodecs API. "A low-level codec API would better support emerging applications,... Read more...
Sony has been quietly revising its latest generation game consoles, starting with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and followed by the PlayStation 5 with a built-in Blu-ray drive. Both revisions have started to find their way to retail shelves in certain territories. The main difference at a glance is the weight. The newer models are lighter than the original versions, and a recent teardown reveals why—the cooling scheme is altered. The other change is less controversial, in that Sony also swapped out the screws on the base. On the original PS5 consoles, users needed to bust out a flat head screwdriver to remove the screws and get at the guts to perform whatever surgery might be required... Read more...
The PlayStation 5 has been out for quite some time now (enough time for their to be a slight PS5 revision), having technically landed on store shelves last November. Actually buying one from a first-party seller takes a giant stroke of luck and excellent timing. Fortunately for geeks like us, photographer Fritzchens Fritz managed to do so (or maybe took a different path—more on that in a moment), and has posted several high resolution die shots of the Oberon system-on-chip (SoC) powering the PS5. You might not be familiar with the Oberon codename, it is what makes the PS5 tick. It's a custom slice of silicon based on an 8-core/16-thread Zen 2 processor clocked at up to 3.5GHz, and an RDNA... It seems Sony has revised its PlayStation 5 console, the version with the built-in Blu-ray drive, leaving customers of the original model *ahem*...screwed. In a sense, anyway, but put the pitchforks and torches down, that's just a play on words. Current PS5 owners are not missing out on much, and certainly not any internal hardware upgrades, like a faster CPU or GPU, or anything of the sort. What's changed? Well, the model designation, for one. The new models are appearing on Australian retail shelves (virtual ones undoubtedly, for all of two nanoseconds before they're snatched up by eager buyers), with the new model number CFI-1102A (up from CFI-1000). If you live in Australia and get your hands... Read more...
Game Science, the developer behind Black Myth: Wukong, announced it is enhancing the visual fidelity of the upcoming game by upgrading from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, and a trailer showing off some of the new visuals looks absolutely spectacular. It also happens to be the first look at an Unreal Engine 5 game enhanced with NVIDIA's Deep Learning Super Sampling technology. There's no mention of the settings or other finer grain details, but at its core, DLSS is a fancy-pants upscaling algorithm that taps into the wonders of artificial intelligence (AI). NVIDIA really hit its stride with the latest implementation—see our are DLSS 2.0 quality and performance evaluation for more thoughts... Read more...
Maybe now Activision's legal team can take a chill pill and stop sending out DMCA take down notices for leaks pertaining to Call of Duty: Vanguard. There is no reason to protect the artwork anymore, because on the heels of releasing a Vanguard teaser trailer earlier this week, Activision has followed that up with an official announcement and a nearly three-minute reveal trailer. As was rumored to be the case, Call of Duty: Vanguard once again returns players to a World War II setting (well, a post WWII setting), this time to "witness the origins of Special Forces as you play a pivotal role and change the face of history." Though the WWII setting is a familiar one in the CoD franchise, lead developer... Read more...
You have another opportunity to play Star Citizen for free, and not just for a weekend. Cloud Imperium Games is letting people trial the title in still-unreleased form at no cost for a little over a week—enough time to check it out, fly a handful of ships, and perhaps even decide to add more money to the crowdfunded coffer. "From now through August 27th, Star Citizen is completely free to download and play. Enjoy access to six iconic ships, each giving you a taste of the distinct career paths and play styles awaiting you in the ‘verse," Cloud Imperium Games says. These free-to-fly events blast off from time to time. This one comes fresh off the heels of Cloud Imperium Games rolling... Read more...
A couple of the developers behind the popular Among Us game are not real happy with Epic Games right now, after releasing its Fortnite Imposters Limited Time Mode (LTM) this week. As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and there is a lot of imitation in the video game space. But even the map in Fortnite's new mode is similar. It's not identical in every aspect. Fortnite Impostors supports up to ten players, including eight Agents tasked with maintaining The Bridge, and two Imposters who try to overtake it. In contrast, Among Us can be played with four to 15 players, and up to three imposters, who are randomly chosen at the beginning of each round. "Work together to root... Read more...
For as hard as Activision has been trying to stifle leaked information about Call of Duty: Vanguard through a series of Digital Millennium Copyright Act take down notices, it is proving to be an impossible task. Even the publisher's own partners can't keep a secret, apparently. Earlier this morning, Sony leaked when the Call of Duty: Vanguard reveal is scheduled to take place. Sony's inadvertent tip comes on the heels of several tweets and forum posts being removed, that had depicted artwork and imagery from the upcoming game. Activision is trying really hard to keep everything under wraps, but if Sony's tip is any indication, the publisher can finally dial back its efforts in the coming days.... Read more...
Over the weekend, EA held a Battlefield 2042 technical playtest on both PC and Xbox platforms for those who applied and got an invite. However, it appears that not everyone read the invitation closely as there were some rather stringent rules broken in the past 72-hour playtest period, leading some players to be banned from the EA test and potentially the game as a whole once it it released. Battlefield 2042 is EA’s upcoming title in the long-running Battlefield series, wherein players will be taken 23 years in the future from now. The world is on the brink of war, and traditional society has collapsed, fragmenting people into groups of “No-Pats” or Non-Patriated people.... Read more...
Just as the sun rises and sets, Epic Games has put another game up for grabs. Anyone can now get open-world RPG Rebel Galaxy for free through August 19th to keep forever. Space is the final frontier and reminiscent of the Wild West in Rebel Galaxy, a game of “action-packed combat, exploration, discovery, trade, and ‘negotiation’.” Players will “battle pirates, explore anomalies, befriend aliens, scavenge battle wreckage, mine asteroids, and discover artifacts,” while choosing their path in the universe. Take a look at the trailer below to get a feel for the game:  If your interest is piqued, then you will need the following minimum specifications on a... Read more...
The Radeon RX 6600 XT officially launched earlier this week, bringing AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics architecture down to more affordable price points (relatively speaking). Radeon RX 6600 XT cards target mainstream, 1080p gamers, and the two models we previously looked in our initial coverage proved to be decent performers and quite power efficient. This time around, we’re going to take a look at a factory-overclocked Radeon RX 6600 XT from AMD board partner, XFX, the MERC 308 Black. The MERC 308 RX 6600 XT Black is the top-of-the-line model in XFX’s Radeon RX 6600 XT lineup. Like most of AMD’s board partners, XFX has an array of cards coming down the pipeline, ranging from simplified... Read more...
Activision and its legal team are apparently scrambling to remove key artwork from the web depicting Call of Duty: Vanguard, the unofficial name of the next CoD installment. It might as well be official, though, because the leaked artwork and where it came from leave little doubt that Activision has settled on a name (same goes for past leaks and rumors). As the story goes, Call of Duty: Vanguard will bring the action back to a World War 2 setting. What appears to be box art for the game were discovered in game files associated with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War after the Season 5 update dropped. If that is the case, then the imagery comes directly from Activision, and is as close to a confirmation... Read more...
Earlier this year, we got to see some Unreal Engine 5 demos that had us rather excited for the technology coming to the gaming industry. As we creep closer to the launch of the game engine, we are beginning to find out games that will be running in Unreal Engine 5, such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 is the sequel in the series of the same name, in which players explore the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone after an explosion rocked the second reactor in 2006. To survive, people will have to fight violent mutants, deadly anomalies, warring factions, and more that plague the radioactive lands. While the story sounds interesting, the game should also look gorgeous with UE5 powering everything. As the... Read more...
With the alien invasion of Fortnite island in full swing, what better way to fight fire with fire with another alien named Clark Kent? With new battle pass quests from Epic Games, players will restore Clark Kent’s memories and unlock his heroic gear. As part of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7 Battle Pass, the new Superman quests and rewards tell the tale of the Man of Steel coming to the island. Unfortunately, it appears his memories were stolen from him, and working through quests one through five will help Kent figure out what happened. After that, you can help Superman return to power with several other quests which give extra rewards. Besides the main questline, players can also “unlock... Read more...
The classic Amiga 500 is getting remade and reborn as another miniature console for old school gaming (in case you're not interested in building a killer Amiga emulator yourself). While the original system was released by Commodore way back in 1987, Retro Games is behind the remake, which is officially dubbed 'The A500 Mini', sometimes stylized as THEA500 Mini. However you want to write it out, this is another nod to retro gaming. Companies continue to try and replicate the success Nintendo had with its NES Classic and SNES Classic consoles, and that has led to some interesting projects, this being one of them. Retro Games has been especially active in the space, having rebooted the famed Commodore... Read more...
Exactly five years ago, No Man’s Sky launched to the world with a less than stellar start by many accounts. However, years of hard work and patches have turned things around to make No Man's Sky a stellar game and story. Now, the group behind the game, Hello Games, is celebrating the anniversary and teasing a new expansion to come. On August 9th, 2016, No Man’s Sky stumbled out of the gate, as we explained it, and was plagued with game-breaking issues. Many players were also quite disappointed with the features at the time, which would soon be rectified with updates and patches. Since the early days, though, there have been 16 different named updates bringing features and fixes... Read more...

It seems as though many companies are looking to the past to plot a path forward with gaming consoles. We've seen Sony and Nintendo release miniaturized versions of their popular consoles, although the latter had the most success with the NES Classic and the SNES Classic. Other companies like Atari have also thrown their hat in the ring. Intellivision, another gaming company with a storied history, announced in October 2018 that it would launch its new Amico gaming console on October 10th, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the console was delayed until April 2021. Then, the console was delayed until Fall 2021. Intellivision has now announced that the Amico is facing another delay,... Read more...
There is a lot of excitement surrounding Valve's upcoming Steam Deck handheld gaming PC, and rightfully so. Adding to the hype, Gabe Newell bragged how the open nature of the Steam Deck is its superpower, and a distinguishing characteristic compared to the crop of game consoles running on proprietary platforms. That means users will be able to install Windows 11 if they choose. But will the Steam Deck be ready to accept Microsoft's next OS at launch? That's the goal. Several factors are at play that make this an interesting question. The biggest one is Microsoft's stringent requirement that systems must enable Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 support. This is an added layer of security that... Read more...
