AMD's next round of server processors are going to be EPYC beasts, if recently leaked documents end up being legitimate. These supposedly official documents outline some of the characteristics of AMD's next-gen EPYC processors based on its upcoming Zen 4 architecture, including the SP5 socket design they will slip into, and the possible max core count. As things currently stand, AMD's EPYC 7003 series based on Zen 3 (codenamed Milan) scale to 64 cores and 128 threads of raw compute muscle. AMD has been on a hot streak in the processor market since it introduced its first-generation Zen architecture in 2017. Its most recent iteration, Zen 3, is available across consumer (Ryzen), workstation (Threadripper), and enterprise (EPYC) product families, topping out at 64 cores for the latter two. AMD is on one heck of a run with its Zen architecture. The company really hit its stride with Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000 series on the desktop), which helped the company steal market share away from Intel and, just as importantly, gain mind share with enthusiasts. Zen 3 is even better (albeit in short supply at the moment), and while still new, there is already talk about what Zen 4 will bring to the table. AMD held its Financial Analyst Day today and the company offered up a broad overview of what we should expect in terms of roadmap technologies execution over the next few years. Some of the topics that were touched on included next-generation RDNA 2 Navi GPU architectures, completely new CDNA GPUs optimized for the data center, along with the planned roll-out of Zen 3 and Zen 4 processor families. AMD just announced today a design win in conjunction with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), in which it will be providing the hardware powering the El Capitan exascale-class supercomputer. What caught our eye about this announcement was not the compute performance -- which will be enormous at 2 exaflops double precision -- but the CPUs and GPUs that will be inside. AMD is riding high on its Zen 2 CPU architecture, both on the desktop and in the server sector, and has managed to steal some market share from Intel because of its recent success. Lest anyone think AMD will now rest on its laurels, the company put that notion to rest during a recent HPC-AI Advisory Council conference in the UK. It was there that AMD revealed some interesting details about its future plans for its EPYC server chips.
