Solid State Drives are a fabulous way to boost a system's performance, but for all their strong points, they aren't an easy upgrade for a lot of people. Performance can vary significantly between manufacturers, only the most expensive drives can replace the need for an HDD in an enthusiast / data-heavy system, and reinstalling a full... Read more...
LaCie's design instincts haven't changed much over the years, but that's certainly not a bad thing. This week, the company announced a new 2-bay network-attached storage solution aimed at small businesses and power users. The LaCie 2big NAS, design by Neil Poulton, is powered by a 2GHz processor and a bolstered file system. Just think about... Read more...
A few years back we attended an Intel IDF event in San Francisco and among other disclosures, behind closed doors, the company was showing off a PCI Express-based SSD with current generation Intel NAND Flash and based on an array of SandForce controllers.  As it turns out, that product never saw the light of day... A couple of years back we attended an IDF event in San Francisco, and among other disclosures, behind closed doors the company was showing off a PCI Express-based SSD with current generation Intel NAND Flash and based on an array of SandForce controllers.  As it turns out, that product never saw the light of day and was more of a demonstration... Smaller form factor 2.5-inch hard drives are finally getting their due in the desktop segment, and it's thanks to the rising popularity (and affordability) of all-in-one (AIO) systems. According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, worldwide shipments of 2.5-inch HDDs to all AIOs are forecast to reach about 1 million... Read more...
Intel has historically stuck with SATA-based solid state storage solutions, but today the company is taking a difference approach with its first PCI-Express solid state storage device. Like the SSD 710 family of products, the newly announced Intel SSD 910 is based on 25nm MLC NAND Flash. The two product families share a number of other low... Read more...

Right now, the "industry standard" for a laptop hard drive is 9.5mm. Some of the largest desktop replacements can use drives a few millimeters higher than that. But soon, 7mm may be the go-to size, as Ultrabooks become the norm and mobile becomes...more mobile. Today, Western Digital introduced a new 7.5mm 2.5" HDD in... Read more...
Are you starting to run low on storage space? Before you bite the bullet and pay an inflated price for another hard drive to store your expanding collection of lolcats or whatever else it is that's hogging your HDD, you might want to consider hanging tight for another month. If you can, you could end up saving as much... Read more...
Records are made to be broken, and that's exactly what Seagate is doing. The company has become the first hard drive maker to achieve the milestone storage density of 1 terabit (1 trillion bits) per square inch, producing a demonstration of the technology that promises to double the storage capacity of today’s hard drives upon its introduction... Yes, the Western Digital S25 SAS enterprise drives have been around for some time, but this generation is special. WD has just shipped the third-generation of the 2.5" SAS HDD family, serving the performance-optimized, mission-critical enterprise server and storage market. Shipping now, the new 2.5-inch, 10,000 RPM... Read more...
Toshiba and Western Digital announced a deal today in which the two companies will essentially swap some manufacturing equipment with each other -- though which is getting the better deal is debateable. Western Digital has agreed to sell Toshiba certain assets related to the production of 3.5" hard drives "to address... Read more...
Severe floods in Thailand in late 2011 left the hard drive industry in a bad spot. It's the place where manufacturers and component suppliers come together, and when flooding occurred, HDD manufacturing came to a near halt. As a result, there was a subsequent shortage of hard drives, which itself led to higher prices that still linger today.... Read more...
NAND Flash and SSDs have become the darling of enthusiasts in recent years, thanks to a potent combination of improved read/write performance, virtually no latency, and lower power consumption compared to hard drives. A new report from the University of California San Diego, however, casts doubt on the long-term scalability of the format.... Read more...
When it comes to adding a performance-enhancing upgrade to your system, a good SSD can’t be beat, but storage capacity is an ever-growing need as well. There was a time when a 1TB drive seemed grossly (deliciously?) excessive for the average user, but these days anything less than 500GB seems woefully undersized. Even casual users who... Seagate this week reported financial results for the quarter ended December 30, 2011, in which the company said it shipped 47 million disk drives and collected $3.2 billion in revenue. For the six months ended on the same day, Seagate says it collected revenue of $6 billion and returned $151 million to shareholders in the form of a dividend.... Read more...
Marvell is doing some magnificent things in the storage space lately. Hot on the heels of co-developing the "Kilimanjaro" native PCIe to NAND flash controller platform with OCZ (demonstrated via OCZ's new Z-Drive R5, which we covered the announcement here), Marvell on Monday unveiled its 88SE9230 6Gbps SATA controller... Thunderbolt clearly is the port to beat at this year's CES, and LaCie is announcing their latest peripherals at the show. There's the new 2big Thunderbolt Series and the eSATA Hub Thunderbolt series, the latter of which allows users to connect external eSATA drives to their Macs. With speeds up to three times faster... This isn't new news, and it shouldn't be a shock to historians, but every now and then, it's really good to reach back and grab some perspective. The SSD or HDD that you're probably using now will look like a relic in just a decade, but look at what a 5MB hard drive looked like in 1956. IBM's 305 RAMAC was considered... Read more...
And just like that, it's a done deal. Seagate has just concluded the acquisition of Samsung's hard disk drive business, only days before the new year. The agreement includes extensive supply and cross-licensing arrangements, which are said to now be "fully operational." Under the terms of the transaction, Seagate has gained select elements... Word around the Web is that some hard drive makers are cutting down their warranty terms, the timing of which couldn't be any worse (we'll get to that in a minute). Western Digital is dropping the distribution warranty period for Caviar Blue, Caviar Green, and Scorpio Blue drives from 3 years to 2 years (Caviar Black... Read more...
