NAND Flash and SSDs have become the darling of enthusiasts in recent years, thanks to a potent combination of improved read/write performance, virtually no latency, and lower power consumption compared to hard drives. A new report from the University of California San Diego, however, casts doubt on the long-term scalability of the format.... Read more...
When it comes to adding a performance-enhancing upgrade to your system, a good SSD can’t be beat, but storage capacity is an ever-growing need as well. There was a time when a 1TB drive seemed grossly (deliciously?) excessive for the average user, but these days anything less than 500GB seems woefully undersized. Even casual users who... Marvell is doing some magnificent things in the storage space lately. Hot on the heels of co-developing the "Kilimanjaro" native PCIe to NAND flash controller platform with OCZ (demonstrated via OCZ's new Z-Drive R5, which we covered the announcement here), Marvell on Monday unveiled its 88SE9230 6Gbps SATA controller... Thunderbolt clearly is the port to beat at this year's CES, and LaCie is announcing their latest peripherals at the show. There's the new 2big Thunderbolt Series and the eSATA Hub Thunderbolt series, the latter of which allows users to connect external eSATA drives to their Macs. With speeds up to three times faster... This isn't new news, and it shouldn't be a shock to historians, but every now and then, it's really good to reach back and grab some perspective. The SSD or HDD that you're probably using now will look like a relic in just a decade, but look at what a 5MB hard drive looked like in 1956. IBM's 305 RAMAC was considered... Read more...
And just like that, it's a done deal. Seagate has just concluded the acquisition of Samsung's hard disk drive business, only days before the new year. The agreement includes extensive supply and cross-licensing arrangements, which are said to now be "fully operational." Under the terms of the transaction, Seagate has gained select elements... Word around the Web is that some hard drive makers are cutting down their warranty terms, the timing of which couldn't be any worse (we'll get to that in a minute). Western Digital is dropping the distribution warranty period for Caviar Blue, Caviar Green, and Scorpio Blue drives from 3 years to 2 years (Caviar Black... Read more...
Word to the wise -- if you find a killer deal on a mechanical hard drive and you need more storage, go ahead and pounce. As you're probably well aware by now, recent flooding in Thailand hit the hard drive industry pretty hard, and that's been resulting in higher prices all around. It's also causing a shortage of... If you're trying to configure an iMac system to arrive in time for the holiday season, you'll have to cap your storage at 1TB. Next day shipping is available on iMacs with a 1TB mechanical hard drive, 256GB solid state drive, or 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD from the Apple Store, but if you choose one of the 2TB HDD options, you'll have to wait 5-7... Multiple motherboard manufacturers are warning that precipitously rising HDD prices will impact their sales. Gigabyte has issued guidance that it now expects Q4 shipments to fall by 20 -25 percent, while Asustek predicts a much smaller decline of ~five percent. Analysts believe Asus is underestimating the impact of... Read more...

Both analysts and Apple are warning that the price of hard drives, which has already been creeping upwards the past few weeks, could jump significantly in Q4 due to catastrophic floods taking place in Thailand. During Apple's conference call this week, CEO Tim Cook said: ""Like many others, we source many components... Read more...
We'd sprinkle salt on ice cream if we thought it would improve the flavor the way it does with almost everything else on the planet. The fact that table salt isn't a food group does nothing to diminish our affection for this essential ingredient (sorry, doc), but did you know it also makes hard drives better? As trippy as that sounds, Dr.... Read more...
Seagate on Wednesday provided an update on its operations in Thailand following severe flooding that has ravaged the region. The hard drive maker said all of its factories in Thailand are operational and there aren't any logistical issues with employees getting to work, but it's not business as usual. "The hard disk... Outside of Hollywood, lasers mounted on sharks is a technology that may never be realized. But in hard drives? The mad scientists at TDK on working on this very thing, and once completed, it has the potential to more than double the capacity of today's hard drives. This isn't a theoretical technology that's still years or decades away, but... Read more...

We've been big fans of innovation in storage for, well, ever. It's usually the bottleneck in modern day systems, and with the advent of NAND / SSD / DRAM, things have been moving in the right direction. But coming up with the perfect solution using what's on the market today is still tough; options are somewhat... Read more...
