Microsoft's Laptop Hunters ads are making an impact on the perception of Windows computers vs. Apple computers in terms of value, according to BrandIndex. That's been the key point in Microsoft's ads, that there are more choices and lower prices among Windows PCs. The data from BrandIndex shows that Apple's value score among the key 18 - 34 segment dropping since late winter to about 12.4 today. Meanwhile, Microsoft has risen from near zero in early February to a value-perception score of 46.2. Ted Marzilli, global managing director for BrandIndex at consumer polling service YouGov said: "Apple had a pretty big advantage, historically, when we look at our data. Apple did a great job of putting... Read more...
We know what you're thinking. You're thinking that this is just another netbook by yet another manufacturer trying to ride the wave of popularity -- and at a glance, we'd say you're right. Upon further investigation, however, you'll find that OCZ Technology's Neutrino is actually a horse of a different color, so to speak. Design-wise, it's a perfectly average netbook, and if you check out the basic specifications, you'll see more of what you're used to. But if you read a little further, you'll notice a few key omissions. And unlike most machines, it's what the Neutrino lacks that differentiates it from the pack. Somehow or another, OCZ has managed to deliver a unique netbook well over a year... Read more...
Back in April of 2008, Toshiba proclaimed that the notebook's future was in flash and SSD. Looks like it's making good on its own prophecy, doesn't it? Just months after announcing a half-terabyte sized solid state drive for 2009, the company has just unveiled its first (and the world's first, so it claims) notebook with a 512GB SSD within. Impressive, no matter how you slice it. More specifically, it's the planet's first laptop configured with an eSATA second generation 512GB solid state drive, and it's the Portégé R600-ST4203 doing the honors. The ultraportable machine weighs just 2.4 pounds and measures only 0.77" thick, and Toshiba points out that it has gone from offering laptops with 32GB... Read more...
Well, has it only been since October since the last high-profile recall of laptop batteries? Indeed it has. On Thursday, HP announced a recall of 70,000 laptop batteries due to overheating issues. In fact, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission's announcement, there are two reports of batteries that overheated and ruptured, resulting in fire. No injuries, though, so that's a positive. Dell has pushed out quite a few new machines of late, and it's not showing any signs whatsoever of slowing down. This week, the company has expanded its iconic Inspiron line by adding in a new netbook, a few new slim and mini-tower desktops and six new colors for the Inspiron 15 lineup.Starting with the smallest of the bunch, we've got the Mini 10v. Naturally, it's not all that different than the existing Mini 10, but it's actually a lower-cost version that makes getting a netbook an even more affordable venture. The machine is launching in seven colors and starting at just $299, which gets you a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, a 10.1" widescreen display (1024 x 576 resolution), 120GB 5400RPM hard... Read more...
If you prefer to ingest your notebook news in bite-sized pieces, you won't enjoy the feast that Asus just laid out one bit. Answering MSI's ultra-sleek X-Slim family is Asus' U Series, a rather attractive line of new machines aimed to be lightweight and highly fashionable, not to mention useful. In Asus' words, these provide both form and function, not one or the other. The lineup includes no fewer than seven machines, all of which are powered by Intel's Core 2 Duo or Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processors. You'll also find LED-backlit widescreen displays, NVIDIA GPUs, Altec Lansing speakers featuring SRS Premium Sound and the company's Express Gate instant-on operating system. For the longest while, Dell seemed perfectly content to continue producing notebooks with a minimalist design. Sure, they were perfectly up to snuff internally, but externally they lacked the more agressive lines and personality captured in some of the high-fashion machines from the likes of Alienware, HP and a few other boutique notebook makers. And then, the Studio line was born. As we saw last fall with the company's Studio Hybrid small form factor desktop, Dell's Studio line of products is a breath of fresh air to anyone who remembers the company's tendency toward "beige boxes" from days gone by. The hip, modern look embodied by the Studio moniker has rubbed... Read more...

Hey, kids -- how would you feel about taking your next round of end-of-quarter exams without even having to pick up a pencil? No, we're not talking about telepathy (though, we kind of like the idea!), we're talking about laptop testing. In a move that we can only hope spreads encouragement to classrooms around the world, about 6,000 students in the nation of Norway are being allowed to complete examinations on their laptops in a trial run that could soon be rolled out across the country.Every single 16 to 19-year old in Nord-Trondelag county in Norway has been involved in the notebook-based system, and it's no surprise to see officials testing things out on the oldest, most "mature" students... For a long time geek like me, who got his start in computing by spending countless hours in front of a Commodore 64, Ben Heck's latest mod is about as cool as it gets. Using the original parts from a working C64, Ben crafted a fully functional laptop, complete with a custom enclosure and 15" LCD screen."This project somehow has the distinction of being both the longest and fastest portable electronics project I have ever done. I originally started making a C64 laptop in the fall of 2006, and kept pecking away at it every so often. Finally, a few weeks ago, I said “screw it” and started over.I redid everything in a week and a half - the shortest project ever. (The previous record hold was the... Read more...
With all the hubbub surrounding Dell's growing Inspiron Mini family and the flashy new Adamo, we had practically forgotten about the all-business Vostro line. Seeing that these are aimed at corporate-class customers, Dell has also stepped up the data reliability and protection by bringing... Read more...
One of the ways AMD is able to test and qualify ATI Mobility Radeon GPUs, without having to design and build numerous mobile reference cards that fit in multiple notebook form factors, is to produce fully-loaded, custom reference cards that'll fit into standard PCI Express x16 slots. The cards won't be used in any actual retail product, but they allow AMD to test all of the various features and functionality, and experiment with clock speeds and voltages to fine tune and balance performance, thermal output, and power consumption. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series What you see pictured here is just such a card. The item pictured below is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670, PCI Express-based... Read more...
Perhaps as an effort to counter what Apple achieved with the MacBook Air, Dell is introducing the new Adamo. Touted as the world’s thinnest laptop, the Adamo features a visually striking thin profile and three-toned outer finish. Adamo, pronounced "A-dahm-o," means "to fall in love with" in Latin. Dell is certainly hoping you’ll fall in love with this notebook’s looks as well as its functionality. The Adamo’s chassis is milled from a single piece of aluminum and features precision detailing with a scalloped backlit keyboard. Even the fan holes, which are punched out squares, have an attractive modern design. An edge-to-edge glass display adds to the Adamo’s striking appearance. The Adamo features... Read more...
Another weekday, another MSI notebook. After detailing a new line of gaming and multimedia laptops at CeBIT this month, the company seems to be trickling out even more as the month of March marches on. Yesterday it was the bargain-minded VX600; today it's the stylish and nimble VR430.MSI's latest (for now, anyway) notebook features a decorative ocean wave lid, the company's own ECO Engine for saving power whenever possible and a slim, sleek overall build. Sitting just between the realms of ultraportables and full size notebooks, the VR430 includes a 14.1" LCD with a 1280 x 800 resolution, a DVD drive, 1.3-megapixel camera (for video calling, video chatting, etc.), a 4-in-1 card reader and three... MSI definitely didn't infringe on the iMac too much with its NetOn AP1900 all-in-one PC, but some might say the company's new X-Slim notebooks bear a strong (maybe too strong) resemblance to Apple's MacBook Air. Of course, we'd argue that the X340 and X600 both have a look of their own, but there's no doubt that some similarities exist. output, What's definitely different, however, is the processor, the color, the ports and of course, the operating system. Both computers are loaded with Intel's ultra-low voltage (ULV) architecture, and the X340 in particular includes a Centrino Mobile platform, a 13 inch LED-backlit display, a maximum thickness of just 1.98 centimeters, an HDMIBlu-ray support,... Over the past few months, you may have noticed that we've been participating in a collaborative initiative with Asus and Intel in an effort to bring the end user online community (you!) together with Asus design engineering and marketing teams to envision, innovate, design, and ultimately create the world's first "crowd-sourced" notebook product.  Without question this was a lofty goal, however, it wasn't necessarily surprising in terms of the outcome that we can share with you today.  When a group of creative, tech-mind individuals get together, the sky is usually the limit.Although the initial result of the collaborative effort is still very much a concept, Asus has begun showing... Wow, talk about a power play. Asus is pulling out all the stops at CeBIT this year, introducing a flood of new motherboards and now, a flood of new notebooks. The most notable newcomer that will be showcased this week is the LAMBORGHINI VX5, a 16 inch speed demon of a laptop that was inspired by the limited edition Lamborghini Reventón. The machine will get powered by a potent Intel Core 2 Quad processor and will feature 4GB of memory, a 1TB SSD (yes, 1TB!), a Full High Definition LCD, NVIDIA's 1GB (GDDR3) GeForce GT 130M and an illuminated "Chiclet" style keyboard that will likely feel much like that of the Eee PC 1000HE's keyboard (just bigger, of course). Furthermore, Asus is giving this machine... Read more...
The Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds is a rather unique product, targeted squarely at mobile professionals who require the power, features, and performance of workstation-class machine on the go. We previously evaluated the standard ThinkPad W700 and praised the system for its performance and stand-out integrated features, like a Wacom Digitizer Tablet and X-Rite Color Calibrator. The ThinkPad W700ds takes all of the features offered by the W700 and ads a secondary, slide-out display, which increases monitor real-estate by 39%. The machine we received for evaluation was outfitted with 4GB of RAM, a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300, an NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M 1GB GPU, and dual Hitachi hard drives running... Read more...
