Android users have long been concerned that OS security updates for many phones come far too infrequently. Even those who are lucky enough to receive them may not get them often enough, considering they're typically released on a monthly cadence. At Google I/O this past week, however, there was some good news announced in regards to this issue. There's still a lot we don't know about Google's upcoming Android P release, but thanks to an inadvertent leak on Google's own blog, speculation about certain minor details has now exploded. It looks like the Home button icon has turned into a pill, the back button into an outline, and the dialog boxes now have curved edges. In a blog post talking about network security improvements in Android P, a screenshot left in tact revealed all of the things mentioned above, as well as a couple of other aesthetic changes. Gamers in the Great White North got a surprise this week as without warning and with no fanfare, PUBG Mobile landed on the Google Play store in the country. This launch highlights the promise that the developer made to get the game on all major platforms. The game is an officially licensed mobile version and the soft launch is viewed as an early release to allow gamers to grab the game and beat on it for stability before a presumed larger rollout. PUBG did the same thing when it launched in early access form on Steam and stayed there for a long time before hitting an official release. As we discovered last week, Samsung's Galaxy S9+ is the new Android smartphone to beat in the flagship sector. It looks great, has a crisp screen, is fast, and has a camera capable of capturing some awesome slo-mo video.  Like clockwork, the folks over at iFixit have torn into the S9+ and revealed all we need to know about its repairability factor. On a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the "easiest to repair", the S9+ scores a lowly 4/10. If there's one thing that this year's Mobile World Congress taught us, it's that some companies are able to change their product designs really quickly according to changing market conditions. We're of course talking about the almighty notch that graced an incredible number of Android flagships shown off at the event. Samsung was one of the few to avoid the temptation, and the S9 and S9+ are probably much better for it. If you're an Android fan who hates the notch, chances are good that you've felt a bit of ire for Apple. Researchers at Purdue University and the University of Iowa have just exposed a list of LTE vulnerabilities that could create quite a headache for carriers (and consumers) if not fixed soon. Using a framework the researchers call LTEInspector, eight of the ten new vulnerabilities were tested as working on a testbed with SIMs from 4 different carriers. There's a lot to love about Mobile World Congress, including seeing how phone makers will improve upon their previous designs. Take LG's new V30S ThinQ, for example. When we took a look at the V30 a couple of months ago, we walked away impressed enough to label the phone an Editor's Choice. It might have been a little pricey, but pretty much everything else made up for it. While this phone is the first to carry the "ThinQ" moniker, it's going to be one that's shared by a great deal of LG's total portfolio in the future, including home appliances. Google has been testing a screenshot tool built straight into its Google app for nearly the past year, and soon, the feature is finally going to become available to a worldwide audience. With this new feature, Google doesn't take over a device's screenshot capabilities, but instead grabs on to the images captured by the OS, allowing you to quickly edit or share them.  It's important to note that this feature only works inside of the Google app, which includes the main screen and links you visit. With large numbers of people around the country ditching landlines and now only using mobile devices, getting fast and accurate location information from a mobile device for 911 services is a major concern. Google has been testing a system that aims to get your location data to 911 operators more quickly and with greater accuracy than the data mobile carriers offer. For the last few years, flagship smartphones have gotten thinner and sleeker and have dedicated a much larger percentage of their front surface to the screen. Back in 2011, for example, the front surface of a Samsung Galaxy S2 was 64% screen, whereas the front of today’s Galaxy S8 is 84% screen. There are many more examples of the same trend from other manufacturers and what they all have in common is that as screens have gotten larger and bezels have gotten smaller, there is less real estate to work with for things like cameras, buttons, and sensors. HP has announced updated EliteBook 800 notebooks and ZBook 14u/15u mobile workstations that have some slick features that mobile pros will love. The new workstations have some common features according to HP including support for the new Thunderbolt Dock G2, new displays, and robust security features. The machines are also rated to MIL-STD-810G. The new notebooks feature premium design language that was previously only available on the EliteBook 1000 series. A handful of Apple engineers fell from Cupertino's tree and into Google's hands earlier this year, and apparently 2017 wasn't about to end without another notable move taking place. Talented engineers commonly move around the industry, so many employer changes are uneventful, but when the person involved in a move is a top chip designer at a major player like Apple, things become a little more interesting. A group of Japanese scientists have made an accidental discovery that could have a huge impact on smartphones and other gadgets in the future. The scientists developed a new type of glass that can self-heal, fusing itself back together when it cracks. This could mean the end to shattered smartphone screens and costly repairs. The discovery was made at the University of Tokyo while the scientists were studying new adhesives. Though this isn't the first claim of self-healing materials for phones, this new breakthrough material does seem to have significant merit. We've been warned about the potential risks of cell phone use due to radiation for ages, but to date, there hasn't been definitive information published that would warrant some sort of formal government or industry action. Nothing changes with that today, but California's Department of Public Health has deemed the risks to be high enough to issue a warning so that perhaps some users won't use these devices as much, as well as get out of the habit of regularly keeping them close to our bodies. For the folks at Intel, all eyes are likely on Qualcomm today. While Intel has faced the toughest competition in recent years from AMD's Ryzen, Ryzen Threadripper, and EPYC family of processors, the company will soon be encountering a separate attack from Qualcomm. As we have reported multiple times, there is a new wave of Windows 10 PCs coming that will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835, ARM-based processors. This improbable feat is made possible by Microsoft's support for full x86 emulation in Windows 10, which is why Snapdragon 835 (and future ARM-based SoCs from Qualcomm) will be able to run the operating system. At its Google I/O conference held this past May, the search and technology giant unveiled a neat new feature which would first roll out to its own Pixel devices. Called Google Lens, this new feature pays a bit of an homage to Google Goggles, a rather popular tool that allowed people to get quick feedback on real-world objects. Take a picture of a statue outside of a sports stadium, for example, and Goggles could have told you who it was, and why it was deserved. Almost as fast as the rumors began, talks of a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile have been officially called off. T-Mobile has announced that discussions on a potential merger, rumors of which surfaced first in September, of the Uncarrier and Sprint have ended because the two companies were unable to find mutually agreeable terms. Even if the two mobile carriers had been able to come to agreeable terms, they certainly would have needed regulatory approval. After an almost mind-boggling number of security and privacy issues that have deluged into our lives over the past handful of years, you'd think that companies would begin to take their customers' private data seriously. Still, there are some who just don't seem to "get it", and apparently, OnePlus has proven to be one of these late bloomers. We are not trying to spark of war of words between iOS and Android users, but when it comes to platform fragmentation, it does not really exist in the iPhone community. What is equally remarkable, however, is how quickly iPhone owners adopt major iOS updates. According to the latest data from Mixpanel, iOS 11 has found its way onto around half of all iPhone (and presumably iPad) devices in less than a month.The data trend shows iOS 11 and iOS 10 both bouncing around the 44 percent, but at its peak earlier today, iOS 11 adoption reached 49.28 percent, versus 46.58 percent for iOS 10, and just 4.15 percent for all other versions of Apple's mobile operating system.
