Apple's iPhone 13 is expected to slightly refresh the exterior and add significant changes under the hood compared to the current-generation iPhone 12 family. In addition to an expected A15 Bionic SoC, doubled internal storage across the board, and a faster 5G modem, highly reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo alleges that the family will bring a significant boost in connectivity. We've all come across situations where we've hit low-signal areas that disrupt 4G/5G connectivity on our smartphones. When this happens, making phone calls, sending texts, and surfing the internet either become frustrating slow/unstable, or doesn't work at all. However, Kuo says that the iPhone 13 family will feature... Read more...
Late last month, during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Apple's popular M1-powered MacBook Air fell to a low $749 versus an MSRP of $999. Today, that deal is back on for a limited time for those that missed out on the first round. As before, the MacBook Air is on sale for $849.99, which represents an already sweet $150 discount. However, signing up for Best Buy's Student Hub (free for anyone to join by clicking here) unearths another $100 discount. At that price, the MacBook Air is a smoking hot deal for anyone looking for a lightweight notebook for productivity tasks. Customers have the choice of purchasing the MacBook Air in Space Gray, Gold, and Silver with free shipping or for in-store/curbside... Read more...
If this latest leak is accurate, we’re less than a month away from the launch of Apple’s new iPhone 13 family. The newest leak alleges that all four iPhone 13 models will launch on Friday, September 17th. If we go backward from that date, Apple’s iPhone keynote would most likely occur on Tuesday, September 7th, based on previous launches. The September 17th launch date also lines up with speculation from Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives according to Mac Rumors. With that said, the iPhone 13 family won’t represent a dramatic departure from the current-generation iPhone 12 and will continue with four separate models: iPhone 13 mini (5.4-inch) iPhone 13 (6.1-inch) iPhone 13 Pro... It’s rumored that Apple will hold multiple keynote events this fall to launch new smartphones, tablets, and Macs. The first event will likely see the arrival of the iPhone 13 family and AirPods 3. The second event will reportedly showcase the M1X-powered MacBook Pros and new iPads. Hardware leaker dylandkt took to Twitter to give us some insight into what to expect with the upcoming MacBook Pro laptops, which will feature the brawnier M1X SoC. According to dylandkt, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will offer the same performance options across the board. This is a considerable departure from previous MacBook Pro generations. The 13-inch MacBook Pro has always played second fiddle since... Read more...
Apple first announced its intention to shift from Intel processors to its homegrown Apple Silicon in Spring 2020, and the first models launched last fall (Mac mini, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air). Since then, Apple Silicon (M1) has found its way to the entry-level iMac and even the iPad Pro. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is claiming that Apple will launch a new “high-end, M1X Mac mini” within “the next several months.” While last year’s M1 refresh of the Mac mini took care of the entry-level and mid-range SKUs, it still offered higher-end models powered by up to an 8th generation Core i7 processor with up to 64GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the current M1 Mac minis... Read more...
As we fast approach the month of September, we must prepare ourselves for a flood of leaked information on the next-generation iPhone family. The iPhone 12 launch was delayed during the global shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the iPhone 13 seems poised for an as-scheduled launch next month. In addition, Apple's flagship phone family will be joined by an all-new Apple Watch Series 7 lineup. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro: An "S" Style Refresh According to a new report, the iPhone 13 Pro will top out 1TB, which doubles the maximum storage on the iPhone 12 Pro. 1TB would become a new high watermark for smartphone storage and beneficial to heavy photo/video users since iPhones have news supported... There seems to be no end in sight for how low Microsoft’s Surface Duo will go. The dual-screen smartphone initially launched with a $1,399 price tag and was quickly discounted due to poor sales. In May, the price fell to $599, and it hit a low of $409.99 in early July. Today, BuyDig is selling the unlocked Surface Duo (128GB) in Glacier White for $389.99, which is a $20 price drop compared to the previous hot deal. If you’d like more storage, the 256GB model is just $80 more at $469.99. Unfortunately, the smartphones are locked to AT&T’s network, so keep that in mind. However, as we detailed in our previous article, you can reach out to AT&T directly to remove the carrier... Read more...
Apple is deep into damage control mode to clarify its messaging on its plan to protect children from online predators. Earlier this month, the company announced several features to stop the spread of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). While well-intentioned, this move sparked a lot of backlash from the online community over customer privacy. One such feature involves communications involving children through iMessage. Apple said it uses on-device machine learning to determine whether images sent or received on a child's device contain sexually explicit photographs. When enabled, parents would receive a notification if such images trigger the Apple filter. For children under the age of 17, CSAM... Read more...
We're roughly a month away from Apple's yearly iPhone keynote, and some last-minute rumors are starting to hit the internet. Thankfully, this latest information is coming from a reputable member of the leak community, Mark Gurman, and his reporting hints at some significant updates for users who shoot videos. The first new feature heading to the iPhone 13 family, according to Gurman, is the inclusion of the Portrait Mode video. Of course, Apple already includes Portrait Mode for photos with its iPhones, which use computational models to add bokeh effects in the background of an image. So, bringing that feature to videos is the next logical step for Apple, and we're surprised that it took this... Read more...
Amazon is cranking out some excellent discounts on its Echo family of hardware and an insanely good deal on Apple's entry-level AirPods. We've rounded the deals up for you here, so let's dig in, shall we? The Echo Show 5 is currently discounted by $30, which takes its price from $84.99 down to $54.99. The Echo Show has a 5.5-inch display with a 960x480 resolution. This is the second-generation model that launched this year, which means that the onboard camera has been upgraded to 2MP (from 1MP), and it includes a physical privacy shutter. Amazon Echo Show 5 Alternatively, you can grab the Echo Show 5 Kids for $64.99, which is discounted by $30. As its name implies, the Kids edition includes parental... Read more...
If you thought Amazon wanting drivers to submit to biometric surveillance was bad, these recent revelations take the cake. Colombia-based call center workers, who perform outsourced customer services for some of the largest companies in the US, are now reportedly being pressured into signing a contract allowing their employer to install cameras in their homes to monitor work performance. Teleperformance is one of the world’s largest call center companies with nearly 400,000 employees and clientele, including Apple, Amazon, and Uber, among others. Now, in a new ground-breaking report from NBC, six workers for the Colombian company, even working on contracts for these companies, have come... Read more...
Late last week, we covered Apple’s new plan to screen text messages for explicit images and files uploaded to iCloud for child sexual abuse material. The announcement, however, garnered quite a bit of attention and concern rather quickly, contrary to what Apple likely wanted. Now, the Cupertino-based company has published a frequently asked questions document to hopefully quell concerns. On August 5th, Apple announced that it would be scanning images for sexually explicit material sent to children. These photos would then be blurred, and a warning about the image’s content would be shown to the child. If the child decided to view the content, their parent would be alerted if they... Apple first introduced the 12-inch MacBook in 2015, and the device was marketed as a thin and light notebook for the consumer market. However, the machine was highly compromised due to its pokey entry-level Intel processors (which often throttled due to the fanless design), just one USB-C port, and the poorly received butterfly keyboard. After updates in 2016 and 2017 (along with some price cuts along the way, which chipped away at its original $1,299 starting price), Apple eventually discontinued the device in 2019. However, Apple is allegedly testing the waters for reintroducing the 12-inch MacBook. According to MacRumors, the survey asked prospective customers to weigh on the size of the laptop... Read more...
Yesterday, Apple previewed new child safety features to protect children from predators and limit the spread of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). While these features, which were developed in conjunction with child safety experts, sound great, they also open the door to future privacy issues. The first major part of the child safety updates regards communication in Messages, Apple's popular messaging app. For example, when there is receipt of sexually explicit photos, "the photo will be blurred and the child will be warned, presented with helpful resources, and reassured it is okay if they do not want to view this photo." If the child decides to view the content, their parents will then be... Read more...
As we watch the Epic Games versus Apple fight continue from the sidelines, a new contender has entered the ring, it seems. Yesterday, billionaire and space mogul Elon Musk surprisingly sided with Epic Games on App Store fees on Twitter. Nearly a year ago, Apple kicked Fortnite off the App Store after Epic Games moved to circumvent Apple’s fees through a new storefront within the battle royale game. Google quickly followed suit after Epic Games tried to pull the same stunt on the Play Store with little success. Since then, there has been a back-and-forth legal battle both in and out of court between Epic Games, Apple, and Google, who all have quite a bit of funding to throw at the fight.... Read more...
When Apple first introduced its custom Arm-based M1 processor late last year, the MacBook Air was one of the first devices to take the plunge. Emboldened with excellent performance and stellar battery life in a lightweight/fanless chassis, the refreshed MacBook Air remains a hot seller for Apple. With a starting price of $999, the MacBook Air isn't exactly cheap, but it's Apple's most affordable laptop. However, a new deal from Best Buy is slashing that price by a whopping $250. First, you'll want to make sure that you sign up for a free My Best Buy account. Then, today's offer is available by signing in to the Best Buy Student Hub, which is also free for anyone to join. The MacBook Air is currently... Read more...
Apple is eager to leave Intel behind as the supplier of CPUs for its Mac lineup, but bear in mind that this transition to using Arm-based silicon based on custom home brewed designs in place of Intel's x86 CPUs is not an overnight thing—Apple last year said it would take a couple of years to complete the transition. As such, rumors of a next-gen Mac Pro powered by another Xeon processor are at least plausible. Let's take a step back for a moment. Apple's pending wholesale switch to custom Arm designs is a seismic shift of sorts. The partnership between Apple and Intel dates back to 2006, when the former moved away from PowerPC hardware to the latter's x86 Core processors. But going forward,... Read more...
Apple first brought biometric authentication to its smartphone family with the iPhone 5s in 2013, courtesy of Touch ID. Over the next several years, Apple would refine Touch ID to make it faster and more secure until it launched its successor, Face ID, with the iPhone X in 2017. Today, Apple tablets and smartphones either use Face ID or Touch ID, but not both. However, a new patent shows how Apple could incorporate both biometric authentication technologies into future iPhones, perhaps as early as the iPhone 14 in 2022. Touch ID in the display is probably the least surprising development for the iPhone, as Android phones have long included the ability to scan your fingerprint using this method.... Read more...
We're always on the lookout for hot deals on Apple's AirPods Pro, as they are among the best wireless earbuds on the market with active noise cancellation. The main problem with the AirPods Pro is that they launched at a relatively hefty $249. The wireless headsets regularly go on sale for $199, but Staples is taking things even further today with a price tag of just $179, although there's a catch which we'll get to later. At $179, this is the lowest price that we've seen yet for the AirPods Pro. As we mentioned, this price gets you active noise cancellation in addition to 3D spatial audio with supported streaming services. Apple also recently added spatial audio support for its Apple Music service... Read more...
Passengers on a recent United Airlines flight departing from San Francisco, California and bound for Orlando, Florida, had to exit the plane and be re-screened because of an ill-advised iPhone prank. A teenager on board the aircraft had used Apple's AirDrop feature to send an unsolicited photo of an airsoft gun to other passengers on board the plane. In today's climate, that is a big no-no. While some may see the de-boarding and re-screening as an overreaction, an abundance of caution is to be expected when taking to the skies on a commercial airline. The boneheaded teen who sent the photo was likely not born yet during the terrorist events of 9-11, or if they were, they would have been less... Read more...
Apple has already embraced mini LED technology on its 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which touts what the company calls a Liquid Retina XDR display. Portions of the screen can get as bright as 1,600 nits (full-screen brightness checks in at 1,000 nits). Looking ahead, Apple has plans of expanding mini LED displays to more products, including the MacBook Air and iPad mini. Mini LED technology is exactly what it sounds like—it uses much smaller LEDs than a conventional LED display. This in turn allows for many more dimming zones as part of the full array backlight configuration, to ultimately provide brighter images with less of a halo effect (where light spills out from an object or subject), and deeper... Sony today announced a new promotion that gives PlayStation 5 owners six months free of the Apple TV+ streaming service. Apple is really pushing its service and expanding its availability to more platforms as it seeks to compete with popular entrenched players like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. If you currently own a PlayStation 5, you have from now until July 22nd, 2022 to redeem the Sony offer. The trial lasts for six months, after which the plan renews at the cost of $4.99 per month (until you decide to cancel it). Unlike typical offers, this "extended trial" is also available for those currently taking part in a free trial for Apple TV+. In that case, this new offer will tack... Read more...
