If people trust their information with businesses tasked with keeping them safe, those companies should at least try to take security seriously. It seems that is not necessarily the case, as a flaw in an app created by Ring was exposing precise location data of customers who posted to the app, when it should have been hiding it. Ring is a smart doorbell and IoT company that created the Neighbors app in 2018, around the same time Amazon completed its acquisition of the company. The Neighbors app was something of a social app where Ring doorbell owners could anonymously share videos that show crime. Think along the lines of a digital neighborhood watch with video footage. Vulnerable Data On Neighbors... Read more...
We're not sure who needs to hear this at Amazon, be it Jeff Bezos or a warehouse manager, or someone in the shipping logistics group, but for the love of everything that is holy, can you PLEASE stop skimping on shipping materials when sending out AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors that cost several hundred dollars? Pretty please, with a Raspberry Pi on top? Look, we get it—over packaging items is both wasteful and an annoyance. You know, like when ordering a stick of lip balm and it gets shipped out in a box that would have been big enough to hold 100 sticks of lip balm, and could have just as easily been sent in a soft-pack mailer -- like the ones you folks for some reason are also using... The situation surrounding the latest generation PC gaming hardware is both frustrating and annoying—certain desirable items are in short supply, and scripted bots only exacerbate things. So imagine finally getting your hands on a Ryzen 5000 series CPU, only for it to arrive damaged, as if Ace Ventura was the delivery person. Unfortunately for an unlucky chap on Reddit, no imagination is needed. After waiting two months to get their hands on a Ryzen 5000 series CPU—any Zen 3 CPU—they finally scored one, a Ryzen 5 5600X. Normally that would be cause for elation, but any good feelings quickly turned sour when the thing arrived, sent out in a soft pack mailer. The result is what... Read more...
At a time when 3.5mm jacks have been a rarity on today's smartphones, it should come as no surprise that wireless earbuds have exploded in popularity. While there are popular options like the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live and Apple AirPods Pro, those devices are typically on sale for around $140 and $200 respectively. Not everyone wants to spend that amount of dough on wireless earbuds, so we've got a few examples below that should offer good sound at a more affordable price point. The Samsung Galaxy Buds nestle neatly within your ears, and have been tuned by AKG. They offer up to six hours of battery life, and come with a charging case which can be recharged wirelessly and provides an additional... Read more...
As we close out the year 2020, discounts are starting to pile up on Amazon-branded hardware for those that want to expand their "smart home" using their new acquired Christmas cash. The discounts abound on a wide variety of hardware from Echo smart speakers, to Fire TV Edition televisions to wireless ear buds, so sit back and take a look at what Amazon has to offer. Echo Smart Speakers Amazon recently redesigned its most popular speaker: the Echo Dot. The fourth-generation model now has an all-new spherical shape, which is a drastic departure from the previous hockey puck designs. Despite the new design, not much has changed with respect to features or sound quality (for better or worse). The... Read more...
This year, the supply of various technology items has been struggling to meet the incredible demand from consumers. People are generally stuck inside with money to burn and time to kill, and a new console or PC is just the ticket to keeping busy for a while. A reddit user who goes by the name McChickenBorn decided it was time to upgrade his PC with a hard to obtain AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU. However, when it arrived, the CPU box was absolutely mangled due to it being shipped in a soft-pack envelope, oops! Getting new bits for a computer can be incredibly exciting unless it comes damaged, which is a significant letdown. Moreover, it is incredibly disappointing when it is hard to get your hands... Earlier this year, Amazon bought Zoox, a relatively unknown company, who was working toward autonomous vehicles. At the time, Amazon consumer business CEO Jeff Wilke stated that “Zoox is working to imagine, invent, and design a world-class autonomous ride-hailing experience,” and now they have something to share. Today, Zoox posted on Twitter the first look at its all-electric ride service vehicle. After playing Cyberpunk 2077 and then seeing this video, it feels like we are taking one step closer to that future. The Zoox vehicle is setup for up to four passengers facing each other on cloth bench-style seats. Inside, riders will find touch screen displays to customize your ride by... Read more...
Amazon’s Fire TV experience is an all-in-one way to watch television shows, movies, and more. The platform is getting better, with a user interface update coming today. The update, announced back in September, brings a redesigned home screen, a new search experience, and user profiles to make life easier. First and foremost is the redesigned home screen, which takes the cake as the best part of this update. Amazon described it as “the single destination for you to access all of your fave content.” From here, you can bounce between TV shows or movies over to the main menu that has options such as “Find, Live, Library” and pinned apps that you want easy access. The... Read more...
The calendar lies! By that I mean, it shows Black Friday and Cyber Monday having already passed, but then how do you explain a $500 discount on an OLED TV that is primed for gaming on next-gen GPUs and consoles? Oh yeah, it's because this has become an entire season of sales, which means you need not fret if you missed out on the barrage of bargains last week. As for that hefty discount, it applies to LG's 55-inch CX-Series OLED TV, which is on sale for $1,496.99 at Amazon (Save $500 - 25% Off). It got a little lower during Black Friday, but the current discount is still a big one, and for one of the most desirable TVs on the market right now. And not just because it is an OLED panel—which... Read more...
Back in late November, we brought you news of Amazon Sidewalk, which is a new initiative from the company that allows smart devices that would typically be on the edge of Wi-Fi range limits (or completely out of range) to piggyback off a nearby, internet-connected device. As a result, a neighbor's Echo Dot or Ring Spotlight Cam could provide internet connectivity for the Ring Floodlight Cam that you want to install on the exterior of your backyard shed. What Is Amazon Sidewalk? “Sidewalk-enabled devices connect to Sidewalk Bridges to access the network," Amazon explained at the time. "Customers with a Sidewalk Bridge can contribute a small portion of their internet bandwidth, which... Read more...
As we get closer to the Christmas holiday, the frequency of delivery trucks coursing through your neighborhood has no doubt spiked. If Amazon's own Prime delivery trucks aren't wheeling down the streets stopping at every other house, there's bound to be frequent activity from USPS, FedEx and UPS trucks as well. Walmart is attempting to battle the dominant Amazon Prime service during the lead-up to Christmas, and it is doing by dropping the $35 order minimum for Walmart+ subscribers on its website starting December 4th. With the $35 minimum now gone, you can purchase as little or as much as you want and get free next-day or two-day shipping on your items. This compares favorably... Read more...
When it comes to development, if you want to make sure your program runs on all hardware with as many operating systems as possible, you need to do testing across all platforms. This can be an incredibly daunting task, but development can be cheaper and easier than ever with cloud-based solutions. Amazon is now offering AWS EC2 Mac instances for anyone to create and test Apple apps with ease. Amazon Web Service’s (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2, is an easy and secure way to deploy “resizable compute capacity in the cloud.” There are many compute components with Amazon EC2, which now includes Apple hardware and software. Inside each Mac instance, you will get an actual Mac... Read more...
If you are trying to get some work done, relax, or just block the world out for a moment, some decent headphones or earbuds could be just the trick. Right now, Amazon has some excellent deals on audio gear that you do not want to miss this Cyber Monday. Bose QuietComfort 35 II Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Bose is one of the brands to beat when it comes to headphones, and these are sure to please. The most significant feature is the three levels of noise cancellation that this headset offers, so you can tailor your level of silence to your situation. Another nifty trick is that the QuietComfort 35 II is Alexa-enabled, so you can go from jamming out to getting questions answered in an instant... Read more...
Any of the Amazon Fire series tablets could make an excellent gift for yourself or others this holiday season. You can use them to read books, watch movies, play some games, or catch up on shows such as the Mandalorian on Disney+. If you want to pick one up, Amazon has them on sale for Cyber Monday a little early, so get one now while you can. The Amazon Fire tablets are Amazon’s foray into the tablet market, and they are undoubtedly bang-for-buck devices. All the Fire tablets have at least a quad-core processor and 16GB of expandable storage, if not more. Also, with displays at 7” or greater, they could be great for reading a book or letting your kids watch YouTube. If this sounds... Read more...
Black Friday has officially come and gone, but there are still many Amazon Black Friday deals around. Samsung, Beats, Logitech, and other big brands are offering discounts on various items from headsets and earbuds to computer mice. To top it all off, all of these deals qualify for Prime Shipping and many include free returns. Here are some of the best Black Friday tech deals you can still grab on Amazon right now. This year there appears to be quite a few discounts on earbuds. The Samsung Galaxy Buds+ Plus are on sale in black, white, red, and blue. A single charge provides up to 11 hours of music, while three minutes of charging will get you an hour of listening time. They are $109.99 USD.... Read more...
Thank the stars above that prices on solid state drives (SSDs) are no longer stratospheric, having plummeted down to earth. Granted, the price-per-gigabyte ratio is still better on mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) storage, but SSDs are fast and attainable on a budget. Especially now—with Cyber Monday in view, Samsung's incredibly fast 970 Evo Plus and 980 Pro SSDs are on sale at Amazon. As we noted in our review of the 970 Evo Plus, this SSD line is optimized for speed in a big way. It is a worthy upgrade over the regular Evo line (read: non-Plus), with much faster write speeds—up to 3,300MB/s, versus 2,500MB/s. Rated sequential reads did not change, but were already blazing fast... Read more...
Generally speaking, the two very best times of the year to shop for a new TV are Black Friday weekend (which pivots into Cyber Monday) and the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. That is when the deepest discounts normally apply. Super Bowl Sunday is not yet in view, but we are into Black Friday weekend, and you can save some hard earned cash on LG's NanoCell 85 series 4K smart TVs. These can generally be considered mid-range in the realm of big screen TVs, offering a nice balance of features, image quality, and price. They are also really good for using with a PC or console to play video games because of the low input lag. That is not always the case when buying a less expensive model, so kudos... Read more...
Now that you are stuffed with turkey and all the fixings, it is time to pivot into shedding whatever extra padding you might have accumulated over Thanksgiving (or maybe that's just me). A great place to start is with a good set of earbuds. To that end, I can personally recommend Apple's AirPods Pro, which are both excellent and deeply discounted right now. You can score the AirPods Pro for $169.99 at Amazon, which amounts to a sizeable $79.01 discount (32 percent) over the list price. This Black Friday bargain beats the previous low price, when these earbuds were marked down to $194 earlier this month. At $169.99, this is lowest price they have ever been, and are worth every penny. The big upgrade... Read more...

They also provide up to 36 hours... Read more...
Smart home appliances and internet of things (IoT) devices are becoming part of daily life for many. You may even have one of these devices near you right now and it's likely connected to the internet in some way. While the product category may offer some innovative solutions, some products on the market currently fail horribly when it comes to security. UK publication Which? bought 11 different smart doorbells from Amazon and eBay and found that they all failed simple security tests. This means if you have one of these devices, you could be at risk for attacks from nefarious intruders. You would think (and would want) the thing securing your home to be secure over the network, but that just... Read more...
Here we go, folks. Black Friday week is upon us, which means the deals are kicking up a notch. You can expect a steady stream of bargains throughout the week (and beyond), and as usual, Amazon is on the front line with deals galore. In this roundup, we have a bunch of discounted Echo and Ring Video security devices to share. Shown above is the Echo Show 8, on sale for $64.99 (down from $129.99). As the model name suggests, it sports an 8-inch display with an HD resolution (1820x800) for making video calls (or use it to see who is standing in front of your Ring Video Doorbell). It also features a 1MP camera with an on/off switch for the camera shutter, volume controls, and four integrated microphones.... Read more...
Staying at home all the time can get pretty boring, especially if you are streaming TV shows and videos from online services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and every other provider that has thrown their hat into the streaming ring. If the lack of a streaming stick is holding you back, let's fix that. Ahead of what is actually supposed to be Black Friday, there are deals to be had on a whole bunch of options. Shown above is one of the cheapest options—it is Amazon's Fire TV Stick Lite with Alexa Remote Lite, on sale for $17.99 (save 40 percent). It is a quick, simple, and effective solution to get streaming. This stick is powered by a quad-core processor and can pull and display content in... Read more...
