Kindle devices seemingly take a backseat to the Fire family of tablets when it comes to “flashiness,” but Amazon clearly hasn’t forgotten about its e-readers. Today, the company announced a major design overhaul for the Kindle Paperwhite, the first such update in three years. Amazon started its refresh with a larger e-ink display, which now measures 6.8 inches. The online retail giant claims that the display is now brighter than ever (10 percent uplift at maximum brightness levels compared to the previous generation) and is surrounded by smaller 10.2mm bezels. The display still provides 300 ppi for crisp text and is glare-free to improve legibility in a wide variety of lighting... Read more...

In the coming weeks, Amazon might introduce its own line of big screen televisions in the United States, perhaps under its Amazon Basics branding. This would be a significant move, and one that could potentially benefit consumers with aggressively priced alternatives to TVs offered by the usual suspects, including LG, Samsung, and Sony. While nothing has been announced, it wouldn't be surprising if this comes to fruition. The retailer already launched a line of Amazon Basics TVs in India last year, including 55-inch, 50-inch, and 43-inch models, all three of which boast a 4K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, speakers with Dolby Atmos, and smart functionality provided by Amazon's Fire TV operating... After conducting a series of tests and close examinations, EVGA believes it has discovered the reason why some of its GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards were giving up the ghost when running Amazon's New World MMORPG. What it boils down to, if EVGA's analysis is correct, is sloppy soldering on certain areas that would not necessarily be visible to the naked eye. For those who were affected, this had been a perplexing and frustrating issue. And to exacerbate the situation, not only is the GeForce RTX 3090 an expensive graphics card, it is also in short supply like practically every other GPU. Getting your hands on one means being very lucky with your timing (Best Buy had a couple of recent inventory... Read more...
Following call center company Teleperformance allegedly forcing employees to undergo AI camera surveillance, Amazon wants to monitor its own customer service employees. Soon, Amazon could use a system that captures all workers' keystrokes to run behavioral analysis and prevent malicious hackers or imposters from stealing data. In a confidential document acquired by Motherboard, Amazon reports that there have been several cases of customer data being accessed around the world. India ranks at the top of the list, with 120 security incidents, followed by the Philippines with just under 70, and the U.S. with approximately 40 security incidents. While each of these incidents are not explained,... Read more...
Amazon has secured a lucrative contract dubbed 'WildandStormy' to supply its Amazon Web Services (AWS) to the United States National Security Agency (NSA), in a deal that could be worth as much as $10 billion when all is said and done. However, it might be premature for Amazon to celebrate the contract win—it's under legal dispute by Microsoft. If this situation sounds familiar, it's because Amazon and Microsoft already fought over a similarly massive contract to supply their respective cloud services to the government. Back in 2019, the US Department of Justice awarded Microsoft Azure for its Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, with the JEDI contract having a ceiling of $10 billion... Read more...

If you thought Amazon wanting drivers to submit to biometric surveillance was bad, these recent revelations take the cake. Colombia-based call center workers, who perform outsourced customer services for some of the largest companies in the US, are now reportedly being pressured into signing a contract allowing their employer to install cameras in their homes to monitor work performance. Teleperformance is one of the world’s largest call center companies with nearly 400,000 employees and clientele, including Apple, Amazon, and Uber, among others. Now, in a new ground-breaking report from NBC, six workers for the Colombian company, even working on contracts for these companies, have come... Read more...

What is the lowest amount you would sell your personal palm print for to a third-party? Amazon is offering $10 in promotional credit to anyone who scans their palm at a checkout-free store and links it to their Amazon account. In late 2020, the company introduced “Amazon One” as a “free, contactless service that lets you use your palm to pay, enter, or identify yourself.” This works because palm prints are like fingerprints in that everyone’s print is unique. As such, the palm prints can be scanned using Amazon’s “proprietary imaging and computer vision algorithms” to capture an image that is then tied to a user’s Amazon account. While... Read more...
Legislators worldwide have had a microscope on Amazon for some time now, and it seems a weakness has been found. The European Union recently slapped the world’s largest e-tailer with the biggest-ever privacy violation fine of a whopping 746-million euro ($888 million). On July 16th, CNPD, or the Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection, handed down the fine after a decision that blamed Amazon for processing personal data in a way that did not comply with EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The imposed fine of “€746 million and corresponding practice revision” was subsequently reported in a recent SEC filing from Amazon, where it was also noted that the... Read more...
Do you own an older Amazon Kindle device? Depending on the model, and whether or not you still use it (or plan to again), you may want to make a list of e-books you want to download and hop to it while you still can. Starting in a few months, the ability to download e-books using the cellular functionality in certain models will disappear for good (owners of newer Kindles need not worry). This is not Amazon playing a cruel trick on digital bookworms. Instead, it is a result of mobile network operators (MNOs) in the United States getting ready to switch off older 3G and 2G cellular signals, as they move to make further inroads in 4G and 5G connectivity. Due to this, Amazon has been sending out... Read more...
Amazon’s New World beta has been open now for over a week. Many players have overall enjoyed fighting monsters, utilizing resources, and joining factions in the MMO, but some have found other ways to enjoy their time. One player adopted the online ID “AmazonOfficial” in New World and has spent their time telling others in the game about many of Amazon’s alleged offenses. The online ID was adopted by Lulu Chiba, a community director at video game developers Aggro Crab Games and Eggnut Games. She quickly discovered that “AmazonOfficial,” “AmazonSupport,” and other desirable names were available and nabbed “AmazonOfficial.” She then decided... Read more...
Just last week, Bitcoin crashed below $30,000, descending to its lowest point in a month, and dropping to less than half of its peak value from April of this year. And today? It is not only back above $30,000, it is fast approaching $40,000 on speculation that Amazon will soon begin accepting the volatile cryptocurrency for online purchases. At the time of this writing, Bitcoin is up nearly 13 percent in the past 24 hours, to $38,449. That's still well below its all-time high of $64,829, but for proponents of Bitcoin (and cryptocurrency in general), it is again trending in the right direction. It also highlights the wild swings that the world's most popular digital currency is prone to. It seems... Read more...
Amazon's game development team is now planning to issue a patch for the New World MMORPG that has made headlines this week for all the wrong reasons. Well, one wrong reason specifically—reports that it is somehow killing expensive GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards, possibly by cooking the memory chips (as one of the theories goes). Reports of issues with NVIDIA's top-tier graphics card surfaced after New World's closed beta went live on Tuesday morning. In multiple threads (on Reddit and New World's forums), users claimed the game was frying their GeForce RTX 3090 hardware, to the point where the cards were no longer functioning, necessitating a warranty replacement. That is never a pleasant... Read more...
Well, this is not good. There are multiple complaints from GeForce RTX 3090 owners who say their GPUs have gone belly-up after spending some time playing the closed beta for Amazon's New World MMORPG. Most of the reports are coming from people who say they own EVGA's GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra card, though not exclusively. The closed beta went live yesterday morning (or afternoon, depending on your time zone), with servers available in North America, Europe, Australia, and Brazil. It is set to launch to the public at large next month on August 31, after being delayed from its original May 2020 launch time frame. New World is one of three games Amazon Game Studios announced in 2016, the only... Read more...
In October of 2019, the Department of Defense awarded Microsoft the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract, which could have been worth upwards of $10 billion over the next decade. Afterward, Amazon, which lost the bid, filed a lawsuit with allegations that former President Donald Trump influenced the decision over his dislike for former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Now, in an incredible turn of events, the Pentagon has canceled the JEDI cloud contract with Microsoft after reporting it wanted to reconsider the contract last year. As reported by the Associated Press, the Pentagon has come out explaining that it is now canceling the JEDI contract to pursue a deal with both Microsoft... Read more...
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has officially relinquished the title of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the world's second largest retailer (behind only Walmart), a designation that now belongs to Andy Jassy, who himself founded and previously served as CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) from April 2016 until this month. We knew this day was coming, it just was not clear exactly when. Amazon disclosed what had been a pending change in leadership in February when sharing its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2021. "Amazon is announcing today that Jeff Bezos will transition to the role of Executive Chair in the third quarter of 2021 and Andy Jassy will become Chief Executive Officer at that... Read more...
At the Windows 11 reveal event, we got to see several new features, which are quite exciting. One of these new features is the ability to install and run Android apps on Windows 11, as if they were regular programs, via the Amazon Appstore. But what about cases where an app you need is not available for the Appstore? The Android apps feature coming to the Windows 11 is happening is thanks to a partnership between Amazon and Intel with its Intel Bridge Technology. This technology is the important part of the equation here, as it is a “runtime post-compiler that enables applications to run natively on x86-based devices, including running those applications on Windows.” In short, this...
