Amazon’s public image has not been all that great lately, with biometric surveillance leaving delivery drivers stressed to the max and long-standing reports swirling of workers needing to urinate in bottles to meet internal performance metrics. It appears that Amazon is trying to fix its image by using community engagement tactics on Twitter, but it may invoked the Streisand effect. The ecommerce giant -- and second-largest employer in the United States -- really came under fire during the past week after a series of reports pointed out Amazon's seeming reluctance to let workers go to the bathroom without penalty. After Amazon directly denied a report alleging that some workers... Read more...
If you're in the market for a no-frills tablet that will handle all your media consumption duties (and more) but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, we have a great deal for you today.  The current-generation Fire HD 10 was launched back in 2019 and carries a retail price of $189.99. However, Amazon is currently selling the tablet with a 43 percent discount ($82 off), bringing it down to just $107.99. The latest Fire HD 10 has, as you might expect, a 10.1-inch Full HD+ display (1920x1200, 224 ppi). Powering the tablet is a 2GHz octa-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. The version on sale today comes with 64GB of onboard storage, although you can boost that capacity further... Read more...
Amazon delivery drivers will have a tough choice ahead if they want to continue working for the retail giant. Starting this week, Amazon is requiring delivery drivers to agree to a "biometric consent" form giving the company permission to use surveillance equipment installed onboard all its delivery vans to track activities (inside and outside the vehicle) and even their behavior while driving. This move comes after a February report confirmed that the surveillance system manufactured by Netradyne, called Driveri, is designed to "[improve] driver behavior" and monitor behavior such as speeding, making illegal U-turns, braking too hard, and failing to acknowledge stop signs. The system can... Read more...
Late last year, Amazon announced its Luna game streaming service to compete with Google Stadia and Microsoft Project xCloud. Previously, it was an invite-only “early access” program, but after months of feedback and improvement, the gaming platform will be available to new customers. Today, Amazon announced that Fire TV customers can download the Luna app and play games with a 7-day free trial to Luna+. After the trial is up, the subscription renews at $5.99/month during the early access period. Customers can also sign up for the $14.99/month Ubisoft+ channel to access both new and old Ubisoft titles on the platform. If you do not have a Fire TV, you can still sign up and request... Valentine's Day is upon us and if you're a procrastinator like some of us, then it's highly probable that you don't have a gift in hand for your significant other. If your “sweetie” is in to tech gadgets, and if they don't mind waiting until tomorrow or Tuesday to get their gift, Amazon has some deals that might be worth considering. Amazon Hardware Is Discounted By Up To $50 Right Now The fourth-generation Echo was launched in late 2020, and brought with it an all-new spherical shape, a built-in smart home hub, better sound, a digital microphone disconnect, and a low-power mode. The latest Echo is priced at $99, but Amazon is currently running a promotion where if you buy two, you... Read more...
Late in January, Amazon updated Alexa to control your home more autonomously if so desired. Continuing in the trend of greater and and more powerful home control, Amazon may be developing a wall-mounted Alexa-based smart home command center to manage all the smart devices you may have. Amazon’s hardware division, called Lab126, is designing the new Alexa device to be a digital command center for the smart home, with features such as “showing users upcoming calendar events, controlling accessories like lights and locks, and playing music and video.” According to the unnamed source, it would also feature microphones and a camera for video conferencing or likely managing Ring doorbells... Word on the web is that Microsoft is planning to heavily discount its dual-screen Surface Duo device in its online store this Friday, but its retail partners are not waiting around. Instead, you can pick one up now for up to $450 off with activation, or $400 if opting to activate later. Either way, you stand to save several hundred dollars. The Surface Duo debuted last year with some impressive hardware in tow. Obviously the dual OLED displays are the stars of the show. When folded, users are treated to a 5.6-inch screen with an 1800x1350 resolution (4:3 aspect ratio), and it can opened up to function as an 8.1-inch tablet with a 2700x1800 resolution (3:2 aspect ratio). Microsoft Surface Duo... Read more...
Two and a half decades after founding the company and serving at its chief executive officer ever since, Jeff Bezos has announced that he is stepping out of the role. The move will come during the third quarter of 2021, when he will transition to become executive chair of Amazon. It has been announced that Andy Jassy will become the new CEO of Amazon at the time. Jassy currently oversees the company's booming Amazon Web Services (AWS) division. Bezos says that he will be leaving Amazon in good hands as Andy is "well known inside the company" and has been a part of the Amazon family for "almost as long as I have." But what everyone is probably wondering is why exactly would Bezos want to step... Read more...
It looks as though Amazon is feeling a bit of pressure when it comes to popular lineup of Video Doorbells produced by its Ring subsidiary. The Ring Video Doorbell, which was last updated in 2020, is priced at $99.99. While that may be cheap for a device from Ring, there are competitors out there that are far cheaper. To get to an even lower price point, Ring today announced the Video Doorbell Wired. This is an all-new device with a slimmer profile, while retaining most of the features of its more expensive siblings. The biggest omission, however, is that this model doesn't have a battery. The lack of a battery accounts for most of the cost savings that you'll find with the Video... Read more...
Amazon has long been working on trying to make users’ lives more convenient with connected devices. They initially introduced the concept of “Hunches” in 2018. This allowed Alexa to inform a user when something was not quite right with their connected device and offer to fix the issue if possible. The company has recently taken Hunches to the next level by enabling Alexa to proactively complete tasks based on the user’s habits without asking for permission beforehand. Alexa is now able to interact with various smart devices without needing to inform users about their actions. These devices include lights, plugs, smart locks, thermostats, and vacuums. According to... Read more...
It appears that Corsair is trying to up its game in the SSD space soon with a Pro-level successor to the current Corsair MP600 SSD. The Corsair MP600 Pro leaked on Amazon yesterday and boasts a whopping 7,000MB/S (7GB/s) read and 6,850 MB/s (6.85GB/s) write speeds. This sort of performance would put Corsair in the same ballpark as, if not beating out, competitors such as Samsung or Sabrent. Thanks to keen-eyed momomo_us on Twitter, we get to see the Corsair 1TB MP600 Pro on the German Amazon website. According to the listing, the high-performance SSD uses a x4 PCIe 4 NVME M.2 interface, which allows the read and write speeds marketed. Inside, the SSD uses “high-density 3D TLC NAND,”... If people trust their information with businesses tasked with keeping them safe, those companies should at least try to take security seriously. It seems that is not necessarily the case, as a flaw in an app created by Ring was exposing precise location data of customers who posted to the app, when it should have been hiding it. Ring is a smart doorbell and IoT company that created the Neighbors app in 2018, around the same time Amazon completed its acquisition of the company. The Neighbors app was something of a social app where Ring doorbell owners could anonymously share videos that show crime. Think along the lines of a digital neighborhood watch with video footage. Vulnerable Data On Neighbors... Read more...
We're not sure who needs to hear this at Amazon, be it Jeff Bezos or a warehouse manager, or someone in the shipping logistics group, but for the love of everything that is holy, can you PLEASE stop skimping on shipping materials when sending out AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors that cost several hundred dollars? Pretty please, with a Raspberry Pi on top? Look, we get it—over packaging items is both wasteful and an annoyance. You know, like when ordering a stick of lip balm and it gets shipped out in a box that would have been big enough to hold 100 sticks of lip balm, and could have just as easily been sent in a soft-pack mailer -- like the ones you folks for some reason are also using... The situation surrounding the latest generation PC gaming hardware is both frustrating and annoying—certain desirable items are in short supply, and scripted bots only exacerbate things. So imagine finally getting your hands on a Ryzen 5000 series CPU, only for it to arrive damaged, as if Ace Ventura was the delivery person. Unfortunately for an unlucky chap on Reddit, no imagination is needed. After waiting two months to get their hands on a Ryzen 5000 series CPU—any Zen 3 CPU—they finally scored one, a Ryzen 5 5600X. Normally that would be cause for elation, but any good feelings quickly turned sour when the thing arrived, sent out in a soft pack mailer. The result is what... Read more...
At a time when 3.5mm jacks have been a rarity on today's smartphones, it should come as no surprise that wireless earbuds have exploded in popularity. While there are popular options like the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live and Apple AirPods Pro, those devices are typically on sale for around $140 and $200 respectively. Not everyone wants to spend that amount of dough on wireless earbuds, so we've got a few examples below that should offer good sound at a more affordable price point. The Samsung Galaxy Buds nestle neatly within your ears, and have been tuned by AKG. They offer up to six hours of battery life, and come with a charging case which can be recharged wirelessly and provides an additional... Read more...
As we close out the year 2020, discounts are starting to pile up on Amazon-branded hardware for those that want to expand their "smart home" using their new acquired Christmas cash. The discounts abound on a wide variety of hardware from Echo smart speakers, to Fire TV Edition televisions to wireless ear buds, so sit back and take a look at what Amazon has to offer. Echo Smart Speakers Amazon recently redesigned its most popular speaker: the Echo Dot. The fourth-generation model now has an all-new spherical shape, which is a drastic departure from the previous hockey puck designs. Despite the new design, not much has changed with respect to features or sound quality (for better or worse). The... Read more...
This year, the supply of various technology items has been struggling to meet the incredible demand from consumers. People are generally stuck inside with money to burn and time to kill, and a new console or PC is just the ticket to keeping busy for a while. A reddit user who goes by the name McChickenBorn decided it was time to upgrade his PC with a hard to obtain AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU. However, when it arrived, the CPU box was absolutely mangled due to it being shipped in a soft-pack envelope, oops! Getting new bits for a computer can be incredibly exciting unless it comes damaged, which is a significant letdown. Moreover, it is incredibly disappointing when it is hard to get your hands... Earlier this year, Amazon bought Zoox, a relatively unknown company, who was working toward autonomous vehicles. At the time, Amazon consumer business CEO Jeff Wilke stated that “Zoox is working to imagine, invent, and design a world-class autonomous ride-hailing experience,” and now they have something to share. Today, Zoox posted on Twitter the first look at its all-electric ride service vehicle. After playing Cyberpunk 2077 and then seeing this video, it feels like we are taking one step closer to that future. The Zoox vehicle is setup for up to four passengers facing each other on cloth bench-style seats. Inside, riders will find touch screen displays to customize your ride by... Read more...
Amazon’s Fire TV experience is an all-in-one way to watch television shows, movies, and more. The platform is getting better, with a user interface update coming today. The update, announced back in September, brings a redesigned home screen, a new search experience, and user profiles to make life easier. First and foremost is the redesigned home screen, which takes the cake as the best part of this update. Amazon described it as “the single destination for you to access all of your fave content.” From here, you can bounce between TV shows or movies over to the main menu that has options such as “Find, Live, Library” and pinned apps that you want easy access. The calendar lies! By that I mean, it shows Black Friday and Cyber Monday having already passed, but then how do you explain a $500 discount on an OLED TV that is primed for gaming on next-gen GPUs and consoles? Oh yeah, it's because this has become an entire season of sales, which means you need not fret if you missed out on the barrage of bargains last week. As for that hefty discount, it applies to LG's 55-inch CX-Series OLED TV, which is on sale for $1,496.99 at Amazon (Save $500 - 25% Off). It got a little lower during Black Friday, but the current discount is still a big one, and for one of the most desirable TVs on the market right now. And not just because it is an OLED panel—which... Read more...
Back in late November, we brought you news of Amazon Sidewalk, which is a new initiative from the company that allows smart devices that would typically be on the edge of Wi-Fi range limits (or completely out of range) to piggyback off a nearby, internet-connected device. As a result, a neighbor's Echo Dot or Ring Spotlight Cam could provide internet connectivity for the Ring Floodlight Cam that you want to install on the exterior of your backyard shed. What Is Amazon Sidewalk? “Sidewalk-enabled devices connect to Sidewalk Bridges to access the network," Amazon explained at the time. "Customers with a Sidewalk Bridge can contribute a small portion of their internet bandwidth, which... Read more...
As we get closer to the Christmas holiday, the frequency of delivery trucks coursing through your neighborhood has no doubt spiked. If Amazon's own Prime delivery trucks aren't wheeling down the streets stopping at every other house, there's bound to be frequent activity from USPS, FedEx and UPS trucks as well. Walmart is attempting to battle the dominant Amazon Prime service during the lead-up to Christmas, and it is doing by dropping the $35 order minimum for Walmart+ subscribers on its website starting December 4th. With the $35 minimum now gone, you can purchase as little or as much as you want and get free next-day or two-day shipping on your items. This compares favorably... Read more...
