Disgruntled games who are not happy with the direction Electronic Arts has taken FIFA 18, the latest installment in the publisher's soccer simulation franchise, have banded together to organize a Black Friday boycott of in-game purchases. Fans of the soccer sim have a long list of grievances, among them a displeasure with how EA has been handling microtransactions, a sticky subject as of late. One of the things gamers are ticked off about is the drop-rate for top players in FIFA 18. While the drop-rate is not officially released, it is rare to get a top player. YouTuber Goran Popovic brought this to attention in a video and a Reddit post that outlines the many things he and others want EA to... Read more...
Electronic Arts has drawn immense criticism from the gaming community over so-called loot boxes and how they are implemented in Star Wars Battlefront II, but it is not just gamers who are speaking out. Belgium's Gaming Commission has determined that loot boxes are a form of gambling and is seeking a ban against them in Europe, and Rep. Chris Lee of hawaii is taking a similar in the United States. According to Lee, loot boxes are a form of gambling aimed at children and it is time to "draw the line." In a video showing Lee and others speak out against the current state of microtransactions, Lee calls to attention Battlefront II and the "predatory behavior" EA is engaging in. "It's a trap," he... At least one analyst has sided with Electronic Arts over its decision to include microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront II, and believe that the outrage by gamers is unwarranted. Furthermore, the analyst in question believes that, if anything, EA and other publishers should be charging more for their games. Say what!? "We view the negative reaction to Star Wars Battlefront II (and industry trading sympathy) as an opportunity to add to Electronic Arts, Take-Two, and Activision Blizzard positions. The handling of the SWBF2 launch by EA has been poor; despite this, we view the suspension of MTX [microtransactions] in the near term as a transitory risk," KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Evan Wingren... Retailers in the United Kingdom had high hopes for Star Wars Battlefront II, at least before the uproar over microtransactions. The expectation was that Battlefront II would sell more copies than Battlefield 1, making it one of the highlights of the holiday season. And maybe Electronic Arts can still pull it off. However, sales are down compared to the first Battlefront game, and by a significant margin. Keeping in mind that we are still talking about Battlefront II's performance in the UK, first week sales are down more than 50 percent compared to Battlefield 1, according to GamesIndustry.biz. Boxed sales figures are also down 61 percent compared to the first Battlefront game, released in 2015.... Read more...
The Internet community has been heard "loud and clear" in regards to microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront II, publisher Electronic Arts said in a statement. Of course, EA would either to be deaf or have its head stuck so far up its backside that all outside noise is effectively drowned out, to avoid hearing the uproar in-game purchases and the money (or time) required to unlock premium characters such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Regardless, EA heard the complaints, and has disabled micrtotransactions in Battlefront II as it scrambles to figure out an amicable compromise. "Our goal has always been to create the best possible game for all of you—devoted Star Wars fans and game players... Read more...
Ladies and gentlemen, StarCraft won the Internet on Tuesday, and perhaps for the entire week. Or more precisely, the social media person who is responsible for StarCraft's Twitter account won the Internet, with a series of savage tweets mocking the microtransaction madness surrounding Star Wars Battlefront II and the response by publisher Electronic Arts when the proverbial poo hit the fan. First, a little backstory. EA drew ire from gamers when it decided an obscenely high amount of "credits" to unlock premium characters, such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Initially, the price was set at 60,000 credits. As constructed, it would take the average gamer around 40 hours of gameplay to earn... Read more...
Game publishing titan Electronic Arts has gone out and acquired Respawn Entertainment, the development studio behind the Titanfall franchise, for $151 million in cash and up to $164 million in long-term equity in the form of restricted stock units to employees, vested over four years. EA also agreed to pay up to $140 million more if Respawn meets certain performance milestones related to future titles. In total, the buyout could be worth $455 million when all is said and done. "We’ve seen firsthand the world-class caliber of Respawn as a development studio with incredible vision, deep talent and an inspiring creative mindset," said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. "Our longtime partnership... Read more...

Electronic Arts has found itself in a giving mood lately (again). During the game publisher's EA Play event on Friday, EA boss Andre Wilson stepped on stage to announce that the company is providing a week of free gaming through its Origin Access and EA Access services for PC and Xbox One, respectively. And if you're a PlayStation 4 owner, you're also getting a free trial for some of EA's games on PS4.The free trial is EA's way of thanking gamers for participating in a recent Play to Give event in which players could complete in in-game challenges during June 2-4 to raise funds. Millions of gamers took part in the event en route to a $1 million donation from EA made in support of anti-bullying."All... Read more...
Although a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront II leaked a few days ago, Electronic Arts is today providing us with the real deal on the sequel to the original game, which launched two years ago. While Star Wars: Battlefront was multiplayer-only (and was roundly criticized because of that oversight), Battlefront II actually has a full single-player campaign for those that want it. In fact, the debut trailer for the game focuses primarily on the single-player mode, which introduces an all-new character: Iden Versio. As the official website for the Battlefront II explains, Iden is a “commander of Inferno Squad—an Imperial special forces unit equally lethal on the ground and in space. Encounter... Read more...
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is the greatest of all time (GOAT) at his position and it's not up for debate. Haters will hate and I'm fine with that. Deflategate was nothing more than a smear campaign by media outlets desperate for hits (I'm looking at you, ESPN), and a blatant power grab by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, otherwise known as Satan in New England. Pats nation will have an opportunity for revenge this Sunday and if EA's Madden NFL 17 simulation is any indication, there's going to be a lot of celebrating and partying throughout the Northeast US. After trailing 17-10 at the end of the first half, Madden NFL 17 has Brady connecting with wide receiver Julian Edelman for... Read more...

Mass Effect fans will have to stay sharp and focused if they are to have any hope of surviving the brutal landscape in Bioware's upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda game. Bioware recently posted a 4K trailer of the third-person shooter that shows off lots of actual gameplay footage, and there is plenty to look for, including a barrage of enemies that don't take kindly to the protagonist's presence. The game's producer, Michael Gamble, took to Twitter to encourage fans to dissect the nearly five-minute long trailer. "Pick it apart. The whole thing. There's TONS in there. :) Powers, weapons, locations. New friends...and enemies," Gamble said. In a followup Twitter post, he added that he and his team... Read more...
Are you a huge Gears of War 4 fan? Well, no matter if you enjoy the game on a high-end Windows 10 PC or on an Xbox One console, you’ll be able to partake in cross-platform gaming sessions starting tomorrow, December 2nd. That’s right, the “elite” PC gaming class will be going head-to-head against “lowly” console gamers. According to The Coalition team, the game’s developers, this test is being used as a way to expand past crossplay Private Matches to full-on Versus experiences. “The purpose of this weekend is to give crossplay a trial run in a public playlist,” writes The Coalition. “We care deeply about players on both platforms and we’ve heard you, so our goal is to use this event to bring... There's a new user interface in the works, one that's currently rolling out in beta form to a small audience playing Battlefield 4 before being made available to Battlefield 1 and Battlefield Hardline as well. The new UI is supposed to make playing with friends easier. You'll be able to create a squad before you even enter a game, along with have the ability to switch between Battlefield titles. The revamped UI will also help ensure that you're able to spawn on your buddies as soon as you're in game, saving you... Read more...
We learned this morning that Mass Effect: Andromeda is being delayed until 2017, but it looks as though Electronic Arts its right on track for a 2016 debut for Titanfall 2. The mech-infused game is scheduled to land during fiscal Q3 according to EA CEO Andrew Wilson, which means that it should blast onto B&M and digital store shelves somewhere between October and the end of December (barring any last-minute hiccups). Interestingly enough, the launch timeframe will put Titanfall 2 right up against Battlefield 1, which will launch on October 21st. But Wilson isn’t worried about cannibalization and indicates that there is plenty of room in the $4.5 billion first-person shooter category for both... Read more...
Fans of the Mass Effect franchise are going to have to wait just a little bit longer for the fourth title in BioWare's third-person sci-fi shooter, Mass Effect: Andromeda, which the developer confirmed has been delayed until "early 2017." In the meantime, BioWare promises another update at the EA Play conference on June 12. The delay isn't a total surprise. Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen hinted that things were slightly off schedule during a recent earnings call. He said at the time that Mass Effect: Andromeda would release in EA's fourth fiscal quarter, which works out to the first quarter of 2017 for the rest of us. BioWare's subsequent announcement is a confirmation of what many had already... Read more...
Brace yourself, Battlefield 5's world premier is coming. In the meantime, go ahead and grab your detective cap, you're going to need it. In anticipation of today's world premier, which is scheduled for 4PM Eastern (1PM Pacific), DICE and Electronic Arts have taken to social media to tease eager gamers with clues about the Battlefield 5, including an extremely short video. The clip is less than 10 seconds long and you have to look very closely for subtle hints. All you see is the neck up of a rendered soldier with detailed facial features, including dirt and the pits of his skin. It's an impressive visual, one that's labeled as "game engine footage," not to be confused with in-game footage. Take... Read more...
Titanfall fans, rejoice! EA and Respawn Entertainment have today announced that Titanfall 2 is coming. We're not being given much information about the game right now, but apparently we'll learn a lot more at EA's Play event on June 12. At this point, all of the information available is tied to the forthcoming game trailer below, which shows a fallen space capsule while a mech quickly approaches, and the voiceover utters some point-blank wisdom: "The problem with being a hero is, you have to be willing to die for what you believe in." While much of what will make Titanfall 2 interesting is being kept a secret for now, one thing we do know is that PlayStation 4 gamers are going to be able to get... Read more...
Get out your driving gloves and buckle up folks, the newest Need for Speed title from developer Ghost Games and publisher Electronic Arts is burning rubber to PCs next month with a few new fancy features in tow. One of those is a 4K resolution option with uncapped framerates. If you have the necessary horsepower to drive a 4K gaming experience, you'll be treated to some sweet visuals. Ghost Games also added manual transmission support to the forthcoming PC release. This was one of the notable omissions when the Need for Speed reboot launched to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 back in early November of last year, and while console gamers will also be getting this amenity at some point, it's not known... Sorry, not sorry Denver Broncos fans, but your battered team led by Satan Manning is going to lose the Super Bowl. Yes, that's a prediction of a bitter New England Patriots fan (me), but also that of Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 16 simulation. Before you dismiss it as just a video game, consider that there are plenty of reasons why you should take the prediction seriously. EA's Madden franchise has a favorable history in predicting the Super Bowl winner. How favorable? Try 9 out of 12. That's right, out of 12 attempts at predicting a Super Bowl winner by way of a game simulation, EA's Madden titles have gotten it right all but three times. If you're a gambling man or woman, a 75 percent success... Read more...
