There's been plenty of doom and gloom surrounding PC shipments over the past few years, with many consumers and business opting to not upgrade their hardware on a regular basis. However, new numbers that are in from research firm Gartner suggests that PC sales actually saw a slight uptick for Q3 2019 compared to the year-ago period, continuing a trend we saw during the second quarter. According to Garner's figures, shipments actually increased by 1.1 percent during Q3 to 68.1 million units. This compares to 67.4 million units during Q3 2018. What's interesting is that there were a number of factors at play that could have had a negative impact on the quarterly numbers: namely warning signs... Read more...
AMD continues to add more server feathers to its cap courtesy of its Zen 2 CPU architecture, which is the driving force behind its 2nd generation EPYC "Rome" processors. One of those feathers is Dell—it announced five new PowerEdge platforms powered by EPYC, each one designed from the group-up and optimized to support features like PCI Express 4.0. Among the new offerings are two 1S racks (PowerEdge R6515 and R7515) and three 2S racks (R6525, R7525, and C6525). According to Dell, the EPYC-equipped PowerEdge C6525 delivers weather modeling results in half the time as previous generation EPYC servers, resulting in faster severe storm notifications. Dell also claims its newest server products... Read more...
Dell often rides the bleeding edge, as it wastes little time arming its laptops and desktops with the latest hardware platforms available. At minimum, this means yearly refreshes of its popular product categories. So, right on cue, Dell has begun rolling out updated variants of its XPS 15 laptop with some nifty upgrades compared to the version we reviewed last September. One of the biggest changes is the addition of an OLED display option. Just as we have been enamored by Samsung's display panels on its mobile phones, we hold Dell's InfinityEdge displays in similar regard, as being among the best around in the laptop space. An InfinityEdge panel is again on tap for the 2019 refresh, but... Read more...

Earlier this summer, Dell announced an all-new XPS 13 2-in-1 convertible running Intel's 10th generation 10nm Ice Lake processors. Today, Dell is giving its popular XPS 13 laptop an internal makeover with the addition of another 10th generation Intel processor -- in this case, Comet Lake. Intel officially announced the availability of Comet Lake this morning, and the XPS 13 will make use of four of those processors: Core i3-10110U Core i5-10210U Core i7-10510U Core i7-10710U The Core i7-10710U in particular is an intriguing option for customers, as it is Intel's first hexa-core U-Series processor. The new Comet Lake processors provide a healthy performance boost over... Read more...
Dell has just unveiled a rather intriguing new desktop that is incredibly modular in design. Meet the OptiPlex 7070 Ultra, which manages to house a fully functioning PC within its display stand in a zero-footprint design. Dell is billing this hybrid all-in-one as the "world's most flexible commercial desktop". So, why is Dell making this claim? For starters, both the display and the PC can be upgraded independently of one another. Up to three displays are supported with the system and they all can be swapped out at will. That also means that if for some unfortunate reason that you need to switch out a defective display, it's a simple affair that doesn't result in you having to ship the entire... Read more...
A week ago, we were able to give you a quick look at the performance of Intel's new 10th generation Core processors based on the 10nm process node. These processors have been a long time coming, as Intel has been overly reliant on its 14nm process node as it worked to overcome engineering challenges at 10nm. Now, one of the first machines packing these new Ice Lake-based processors is available to purchase, and it comes from Dell. The XPS 13 2-in-1 (7390) was first announced back at Computex, and represents a huge step up in performance compared to its predecessor.  Base systems come with the Core i3-1005G1, which is a dual-core, quad-thread processor with a base clock... The neat thing about being a tech head is there always seems to be some kind of sales event going on, or right around the corner. So it goes right now—Amazon will kick off its annual Prime Day extravaganza on Monday, and ahead of the big event, Dell has marked a whole bunch of products for sale for its Black Friday in July promotion that is going on right now. The deals stretch far and wide, covering everything from general purpose laptops and 2-in-1 devices, to enthusiast-grade XPS and Alienware systems. Some laptop and desktop consumers may want to double-check that they have recently updated their devices. It was discovered that millions of Dell PCs as well as other brands could be vulnerable to hackers. The security flaw was caused by a 3rd party software package and affected Dell’s SupportAssist software, as well other rebranded versions of this particular software that Dell and other brands employ. The Dell SupportAssist software is pre-installed on devices and is intended to “proactively checks the health of your system’s hardware and software.” Since SupportAssist runs health checks on a device, it has unfettered access to the system. SupportAssist is able... Read more...
Yesterday morning, we got our hands on some leaked benchmarks for Intel’s upcoming Core i7-1065 G7 processor. This is a 10nm Ice Lake-U part that features a total of four cores (8 threads), a base clock of 1.3GHz, an all-core boost clock of 3.5GHz, a single-core boost of 3.9GHz, and a max TDP of 15 watts. To go along with the PassMark benches that we reported on in that article, we also provided Geekbench scores dated May 28th of a Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 convertible. Those benchmarks showed the system putting up impressive single- and multi-core scores of 5234 and 17330 respectively. Today, we’ve got a fresh set of Geekbench scores, and they’re more recent,... Another day, another device vulnerability. It was recently discovered that hackers are able to remotely execute code with admin privileges through a Dell SupportAssist utility vulnerability. It is believed that a “high number” of users could be impacted. American security researcher Bill Demirkapi discovered the vulnerability. The vulnerability affects users who use non-updated versions of the Dell SupportAssist tool. This tool comes pre-installed on Dell devices alongside Windows OS. The hackers use a ARP Spoofing and a DNS Spoofing attack. The attackers lead users to a subdomain of dell.com. Once users have reached the site, the DNS Spoofing attack will return an “incorrect”... Give Dell credit, the bulk system builder has not shied away from Linux, and for several years has offered certain PCs with Ubuntu installed instead of Windows. That includes its Precision 7000 tower and rack workstations, and of course the XPS 13 Developer Edition.. Now you can order a more affordable Precision 3540 or 3541 mobile workstation with Ubuntu installed, if that is your desire. Dell is not making a huge deal about this, though it is a notable option. As far as Dell is concerned, the new Precision 3540 workstations are notable because they put in the hands of creators a "budget-friendly" solution capable of 2D and 3D CAD design, heavy Excel workbook crunching, and so forth. "Ideal... Read more...

It's not uncommon for OEM system builders to refresh their products the moment new GPUs or CPUs are announced. Intel's recently announced 9th Gen Core mobile processor additions and NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1650 launch provided an opportunity to do that very thing, and Dell responded in kind by retooling its G5 and G7 series of gaming laptops. The even better news is, an overhauled XPS 15 is in now tow as well. The new G5 and G7 configurations are available right now. They boast part selections from Intel's latest Core i9 processors, up to a Core i7-9750H. That particular SKU is a burly mobile processor with 6 cores and 12 threads clocked at 2.6GHz to 4.5GHz. "This newest generation of Intel Core... Read more...
As far as gaming laptops go, Dell's Alienware brand has historically been synonymous with some of the most powerful configurations on the market. And where the trend lately has been toward ever thinner and lighter versions of these otherwise traditional desktop replacement machines, even Dell's recently released Alienware m15 eschews trimming every bit of mass from its design in order to keep from cutting too deeply into its performance-optimized, muscular build. And then there's Alienware's all-new Area-51m that we're looking at here. Although you wouldn't know it at first glance, the Area-51m is nearly a complete departure from traditional gaming laptop platforms, and one that's... Read more...
If you've been following the gaming hardware scene, it's likely that you're somewhat familiar with Dell's incredibly slick Alienware Area-51m, which is an absolute beast desktop replacement gaming laptop. This machine was unveiled at CES 2019 and packs inside the sort of hardware that most desktop gamers would envy, nevermind a portable platform. Something that really sets the Alienware Area-51m apart from the laptop masses is how easily the components can be replaced for upgrades or repair. HotHardware has put together a video that shows a teardown of the Alienware notebook and gives you a look at what buyers can expect to find once the bottom lid is taken off the machine. One of the simple,... Read more...
Back at the CES show in January, we toured Dell's refreshed Alienware Area-51m notebok, a true desktop replacement machine in every sense. Fast forward a couple of months and we now have one of these fully loaded beast systems in-house. We're working on the full review but in the meantime, we wanted to give you a preview of what this machine uniquely-built laptop brings to the table. The Alienware Area-51m sports a new design and is being billed as the "most powerful gaming laptop" around. Dell backs that claim by injecting the laptop with up to a 9th generation Intel Core i9-9900K processor, making this Dell's first notebook to support 8-core CPUs. That alone is noteworthy, though it is... Read more...
When you think of Dell or its Alienware brand, the first thing that comes to mind is probably a PCs and not a peripheral. Be that as it may, Dell is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the peripheral market as part of a larger play, one in which it can sell gamers on a unified ecosystem through its Alienware division. You could, for example, buy an Alienware desktop and plug it into an Alienware monitor (even a giant 55-inch OLED display, if you have the bankroll), and then surround it with Alienware peripherals. Talk about an invasion! Whether you would want to is another question, and to help answer that, Dell sent us its AW988 Wireless Gaming Headset and AW959 Elite Gaming Mouse. We're already... Dell is one of the biggest computer manufacturers in the world and has designed some impressive laptops and 2-in-1 devices to its credit. Recently, we put the all-new 2019 XPS 13 in the slick Frost White color through its paces and came away impressed by the premium ultra-portable notebook. Dell makes all sorts of laptop and desktop computers, and over the years one of the more interesting accessories for its laptops is the Dell Power Bank with the Dell Hybrid Power Adapter. Combined those products allowed users to power their laptop computer both at and away from a power outlet. The Hybrid Power adapter is removable from the Dell Power Bank by pressing a pair of tabs.
