How we both create and view art is being changed right before our very eyes. Along with artificial intelligence (AI), LG OLED displays are being used to change the very landscape of the art world. When one thinks about an art exhibit, the images of exquisite paintings hanging on walls come to mind. Artist Refix Anadol has taken a slightly different approach to his art in that he does not use paints or canvas to bring his art to life. Instead he employs the use of digital pigmentation and light through fluid solver algorithms with the aid of AI and then displays it on OLED screens. Anado's exhibition Machine Hallucinations: Nature Dreams is currently on display at the Konig Galerie in Germany.... Read more...
One often-posted work-around for enthusiasts' inability to locate new graphics cards is to purchase a pre-built gaming PC or a gaming laptop. In the past, hardcore system-building enthusiasts have sneered at gaming laptops, as their perceived gaming performance value was widely regarded to be inferior for in-place gaming. Given the exorbitant prices placed on performance graphics cards lately, they've become downright desirable. One perfect example of just such a machine is this Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED YD. Packing a Core i7-11800H CPU, 16GB of memory, and a GeForce RTX 3080 (mobile; 8GB GDDR6), this portable powerhouse should have no problem driving its 4K UHD AMOLED display to playable framerates.... The latest version of Dell's XPS 15 (9510) is not a drastic departure from last year's model (9500). In terms of the physical design it is actually no different at all, which is not a bad thing. Last year saw Dell tweak the XPS 15's composition with a handful of subtle refinements, like slimming down the bezels on the InfinityEdge display and endowing it with a much bigger touchpad. The culmination of those and other small changes was a polished laptop inside and out, and the same can be said for this year's revision -- except it's faster. That is to say, Dell retained everything we liked about last year's model and injected it with upgraded hardware for this year's refresh. It also added a gorgeous... Read more...
If you’re in the market for a high-quality. large-screen HDTV, Amazon is currently running some compelling deals on the Sony Bravia XR A80J Smart TV in 65-inch and 77-inch sizes. Now that the NFL regular season is upon us, now is perhaps as good a time as any to upgrade your viewing experience. As you might expect from a high-end TV, Sony throws in everything but the kitchen sink with the Bravia XR family. The TVs feature OLED display technology, a requisite 4K resolution (at up to 120Hz), Dolby Vision HDR (great for the new Xbox Series X/S update), and the Cognitive Processor XR chip (which helps deliver inky blacks, excellent contrast, and more natural colors). Given that these are Smart... Read more...
Earlier this year, Samsung Display gave us a status update on its efforts to develop high refresh rate OLED panels for the laptop market. Up until this point, OLED panels for notebooks have been stuck at 60Hz, while LCD panels have hit 144Hz, 240Hz, and beyond. This week, the South Korean electronics giant confirmed that its 90Hz laptop panels entered mass production for smoother on-screen action. Despite the perceived refresh rate deficit compared to a 120Hz LCD panel, Samsung Display says that the OLED panel will produce more natural-looking images, while blur length in videos is improved by 10 percent. In addition, the response time for the 90Hz panel is 10x faster than its 120Hz LCD counterparts,... Read more...
OLED displays have taken over the smartphone world, with most mid-range and flagship devices adopting the technology. However, it's been a slower transition on the laptop side for cost reasons. ASUS apparently didn't get the memo, as it just launched a comprehensive lineup of laptops that all feature OLED displays. These include members of the ProArt Studiobook Pro, Zenbook Pro, Vivobook Pro, and ExpertBook families. The ProArt Studiobook 16 and ProArt Studiobook 16 Pro are aimed squarely at the workstation market. The former is available with AMD Ryzen 5000 H-Series or 3rd generation Intel Xeon processors, while the latter is available with Ryzen 5000 H-Series or Intel Core i7 processors. Given... Read more...
Over the past few years, smartphone operating systems -- namely, Android and iOS -- have adopted Dark Mode options to reduce eye strain at night and help save battery life on devices with OLED displays. For that latter point, the general idea is that OLED-equipped smartphones don't need to power portions of the display with a black background, leading to power savings. However, researchers at Perdue University decided to question that perception about how much Dark Mode improves efficiency. "When the industry rushed to adopt dark mode, it didn't have the tools yet to accurately measure power draw by the pixels," said Purdue Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Charlie Hu. To test this... Read more...
Although we're now in the year 2021, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will soon kick off. The COVID-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc across the world during 2020 was the reason for the delay, but things will officially get underway on July 23rd and run through August 8th. Many of us will be glued to our TV sets to watch the games on our big screen Smart TVs, complete with surround sound speaker systems. However, the games are being held in Japan, and there is a considerable time zone difference here in the United States. That means that we'll likely miss many critical events as they occur live, and even if we can catch live events (or have time to watch them on replay), we might not be sitting in front... The many rumors about Nintendo's updated Switch with an OLED display that pelted us over the past few months were accurate, but the timing of the announcement was a bit off. The company surprised us all this morning by announcing the new OLED model without any fanfare. As expected, the new display panel measures 7 inches diagonally versus 6.2 inches for the original Switch. While earlier rumors had indicated that the new Switch would support up to 4K resolutions, Nintendo brings us back down to earth by confirming that it only supports up to 1080p when docked. So, unfortunately, the hopes of gaming with the Nintendo Switch at 4K resolution with NVIDIA DLSS have gone up in smoke. Given that... Read more...
With mobile phone displays switching over to OLED panels, companies like Japan Display Inc., specializing in LCD screens, face the consequences. However, OLED panels are not perfect, nor can they do everything, such as displays in virtual and augmented reality headsets. The pixel density of LCDs simply cannot be matched with present technology or price, so that is what JDI is now focusing on in the fledgling VR and AR marketplace. Following the downturn in LCD sales to smartphone manufacturers, the Tokyo-based JDI believes that its display technology will become the standard for VR/AR as “it can achieve higher resolution than OLED while keeping costs reasonable,” as reported by Bloomberg.... While rollable and foldable displays are here, Samsung is constantly looking to the future to see where technology will lead. As such, many people look to the South Korean company for information, and what they have to offer is quite interesting. In the future, we could potentially see “free-form displays,” or stretchable screens, become the next big thing. This month, researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), a research and development facility, published research about making stretchable devices a reality. The study and research established that “stable performance in a stretchable device with high elongation,” could be achieved, which is a... Read more...
We reported last week that some 12.9-inch iPad Pro owners have been unhappy with the device's all-new Liquid Retina XDR Mini-LED display. Mini-LED brings contrast ratio and black levels that rival OLEDs while delivering an unmatched maximum brightness of 1,600 nits. However, every technology has its downsides, and with Mini-LED, it's display blooming. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro has 5.6 million pixels but only around 2,500 dimming zones. So instead of per-pixel control over backlighting, there can be a noticeable halo effect or "blooming" around text or other light-colored images on a screen. Not all iPad Pro users have complained about blooming, and it doesn't appear that all devices exhibit the... Read more...
Yesterday, we were presented with some new information on the upcoming [alleged] Nintendo Switch Pro, namely that it will be unveiled before E3 2021. Today, we're learning even more about Nintendo's "flagship" Switch, which could feature a $349 or higher price tag. The news comes to us from the Spanish website Vandel, which claims to have received information from Nintendo partners tasked with creating accessories for the Switch Pro. First of all, there's confirmation that the Switch Pro will feature a larger OLED display (rumored to measure 7 inches diagonally) with smaller bezels. The size of the console is reportedly a close match for the original [standard] Switch, and the detachable Joy-con... Read more...
We've always been big fans of the XPS 13 line of mobile devices (in both laptop and 2-in-1 form-factors), and now Dell is stepping up its game when it comes to displays. The XPS 13 was last refreshed in early 2020, and with that design switch-up came a shift to a 13.4-inch IPS 16:10 display panel available in 1920x1200 or 3840x2400 resolutions. Now, Dell is adding another display to the options sheet, and it's a beauty: a 13.4-inch Infinity Edge OLED touch panel with a resolution of 3456x2160. The company promises 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, 400-nit brightness rating, and a 100,000:1 contrast ratio to deliver inky blacks and "true-to-life color" in just about any scenario.... Tell us if you've heard this one before: Nintendo is working on a more powerful version of the Switch to maintain its brisk sales momentum while fending off the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Although the Japanese gaming giant has either denied or demurred on these rumors in the past, today marks the four-year anniversary of the console's original launch. With that anniversary comes a highly credible report alleging that the Switch is in for a significant display upgrade. The new Switch is not only getting a bump in size to 7 inches (at 720p), but it is shifting to OLED technology. Besides offering better contrast and faster response times than the displays on the current Switch and... Read more...
Rumors have been swirling that Apple is working on a mixed reality or augmented reality headset, potentially with dual 8K resolution displays and eye-tracking technology. The simple act of Apple releasing an AR/VR product is a potential game changer for the category. Adding to that, it's now being reported that Apple has teamed up with TSMC to make micro OLED displays for its upcoming headset. Apple and TSMC already have a longstanding relationship, with the latter being a major chip supplier for the former, including its fancy M1 silicon. But as far as displays go, this is an interesting arrangement. Micro OLED is a different animal than a traditional LED or OLED displays—instead of being... Read more...
We’ve been hearing a lot on the display front from Samsung during the opening days of 2021. Just last week, Samsung revealed its vision for under-display webcams, which would allow laptops with OLED displays to have ultra-slim bezels all around (screen-to-body ration of 93 percent, versus around 85 percent on traditional laptop displays). Today, Samsung is talking up a new innovation with OLED displays for laptops, and this pertains to cranking the refresh rate up to 90Hz. OLED displays up until this point for laptops have featured a refresh rate of 60Hz, which is fine for general productivity work, but not exactly optimum for high FPS gaming. That’s where the 90Hz panels comes... Read more...
In an effort to facilitate even skinnier laptop design and blanket the laptop market with OLED screens, Samsung Display is getting ready to introduce new OLED panel for notebooks that are thinner than any US coin, be it a quarter, nickel, dime, penny, or anything else. Samsung is calling it the "Blade Bezel," and to achieve the extreme thinness, the company moved the webcam underneath the display. We don't mean the webcam sits at the bottom of the display, as Dell experimented with on some of its previous laptops, like the XPS 13 9370 in 2018—we were never big fans of that placement, because nobody needs a clear view of our nostrils (and fortunately Dell went back to putting the webcam... LG is a major force in the OLED TV market, and if you are a gamer who has researched your options, you undoubtedly have come across the company's offerings, the latest being its CX series. Believe it or not, however, LG has yet to release an OLED monitor for PCs. That is about to change—LG has announced its brand new UltraFine OLED Pro (32EP950) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today. While not aimed at gamers (unlike the 48-inch auto-bending OLED display that is coming), LG is looking to make a splash in the OLED monitor scene with a professional grade 31.5 panel sporting a 4K resolution (3840x2160) and accurate color reproduction. According to LG, its first OLED monitor boasts 99... Read more...
Mercedes-Benz, like a lot of other luxury cars makers out there, is in a race to one-up Tesla. Tesla really came into its own back in the early 2010s with its Model S, and then expanded its lineup over the years with its Model X, Model 3, and most recently the Model Y. Mercedes-Benz is looking to challenge Tesla for EV supremacy with its upcoming EQS EV. While the final production exterior design of the upcoming EQS has not been unveiled, Mercedes-Benz is more than willing to give us a glimpse at the vehicle's interior. The central focus of the interior is its next-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, which is highlighted by the Hyperscreen. If you thought that... Read more...
A staple of a premium laptop is an OLED display. Not all premium laptops leverage OLED, but the ones that do tend to stand out from the crowd, like Dell's XPS 13 we reviewed last year. Expect to see more laptops sporting OLED screens in 2021. Helping to make it happen, Samsung is planning to unveil more than half a dozen new OLED displays for laptops at CES 2021. From Samsung's vantage point, there is an expanded opportunity to shovel OLED displays into the laptop marketplace, due to rallying demand for laptops as more people find themselves working from home, engaging in online education, and of course gaming. "Just as Samsung’s OLED displays have outstripped LCDs in design elegance and... Read more...
LG Display has some big plans for its transparent OLED technology, and it extends beyond using it only on automatic sliding doors, as the company touted earlier this month. The display maker wants its see-through OLED screens to permeate multiple facets of everyday living, from sushi bars and other restaurants, to even your bedroom. Er, I mean your smart bedroom. "LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today brand-new Transparent OLED applications to be showcased at the upcoming all-digital CES 2021. The company has applied its cutting-edge transparent OLED displays to objects and situations that people encounter on a daily basis, thereby presenting... Read more...
