OnePlus today confirmed that one of its long-held practices regarding its smartphones won’t continue for 2021. As has typically been the case with OnePlus, it launches a new flagship smartphone during the first half of the year, then follows up with an enhanced “T” version during the second half. We’ve seen in recent years this with the OnePlus 6/6T, OnePlus 7/7T, and the OnePlus 8/8T. However, the company says that there won’t be a OnePlus 9T follow-up for the OnePlus 9. This is effectively the latest fallout from the integration of OnePlus with another BBK Electronics subsidiary, Oppo. With all the changes that are happening, OnePlus founder Pete Lau posted a blog... Read more...
OnePlus is over-the-moon excited to announce a new over-the-air (OTA) update for OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 owners. The update is being pushed out with OxygenOS 11.2.9.9 and, in addition to "multiple regular system optimizations," OnePlus it "greatly improved the camera performance," which is notable because we already found the photo-taking capabilities of both handsets to generally be very good, but with room for improvement. You can (and should!) check out our OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro review for our full analysis and a bunch of sample photos. To the point, though, we found the Hasselblad partnership to be more than a branding exercise. We were, however, left wanting a bit more. And at least on paper,... Read more...
After releasing the excellent $79 half in-ear OnePlus Buds last summer (now just $59), followed by the decent $49 full in-ear OnePlus Buds Z last fall, OnePlus just launched its most stylish and expensive TWS (true wireless stereo) earbuds to date, the $149 full in-ear OnePlus Buds Pro, which crank things up a notch by adding ANC (active noise cancellation) and wireless charging to the standard feature list. While OnePlus is clearly targeting Apple's $249 AirPods Pro (currently $179 on sale) and Samsung’s brand new $149 Galaxy Buds2, it’s also competing with more affordable, yet quite capable, TWS earbuds with ANC and wireless charging, like Nothing’s $99 ear (1) and TCL’s... We guess it's better late than never, but OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T owners are finally gaining access to Android 11. The OnePlus 6 initially launched in early 2018 with Android 8.1 installed, while the OnePlus 6T debuted later that year with Android 9. OnePlus only released the third beta of its Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 earlier this week, but the final public software update is now available. Since Android 11 first launched in September 2020 and Android 12 is just weeks away, OnePlus sure did take its sweet time to update these older devices. OxygenOS 11, of course, brings updated visuals throughout the user interface and plenty of optimizations compared to OxygenOS 10. However, OnePlus warns... Read more...
It's no secret that Samsung plans to launch its new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphone later today. The devices have been making the rounds in leaked form for months and are highly anticipated by smartphone enthusiasts. However, OnePlus is apparently looking to make some waves of its own with a folding smartphone, as witnessed by emails and posts that went out yesterday. In a video teaser posted to Instagram, we see OnePlus' take on folding smartphones, which appears to take a page from LG's playbook. However, it seems as though OnePlus is using a OnePlus 9 Pro (or perhaps a garden variety OnePlus 9) with an accessory case that adds a second display. So, in essence, we're looking... Read more...
Late last month, the OnePlus Nord 2 was announced as a feature-packed mid-range phone with a compelling price tag. The smartphone features a MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC, a 6.43-inch Full HD OLED 90Hz display, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. Also in the mix is a 4,500 mAh battery that supports Warp Charge 65 fast charging. Unfortunately, it's the battery that is causing issues for one unlucky new OnePlus Nord 2 owner. According to Ankur Sharma's post on Twitter, his wife was out for a bike ride carrying her 5-day-old Nord 2 in a sling. Then, out of nowhere, the phone seemingly exploded, and smoke started billowing from the sling. Sharma posted images of the charred smartphone to Twitter,... Read more...
As would be expected after abandoning the smartphone business earlier this year, LG's share of the handset market in the United States has taken a major hit—the latest data shows LG's smartphone share plummeted 35 percent in the first half of 2021, compared to a year ago. Meanwhile, OnePlus is doing gangbusters with its smartphone business. Interestingly enough, LG exited the smartphone business right as the push for 5G technologies began to drive more shipments overall. This is evidenced in the latest data corralled by Counterpoint Research—it shows that the US smartphone market saw a 27 percent year-over-year increase during the first half of this year, and attributed the gain to... Earlier this month, OnePlus was busted for throttling the performance of its OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro smartphones in a wide variety of Android applications. The revelation was only brought to light by extensive research by AnandTech, after which OnePlus came clean to the tech community. The incident led to Geekbench delisting OnePlus devices from its popular benchmark, while OnePlus tried to explain that it took these actions to improve battery life for customers. "Our R&D team has been working over the past few months to optimize the devices' performance when using 300 of the most popular apps, including Chrome, by matching the app's processor requirements with the most appropriate power," said... Earlier this month, OnePlus officially confirmed the impending launch of the Nord 2 5G, the latest in its evolution of mid-range smartphones for consumers. At the time, the company was light on details, only indicating that it would ship with a MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI 5G SoC. Today, OnePlus is getting official with the Nord 2 5G, and it looks pretty impressive, at least on paper. In addition to the aforementioned Dimensity 1200-AI SoC, you'll find 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in base systems. In comparison, an optional configuration will get you 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. You'll be interacting with the device primarily through its 6.43-inch Full HD OLED display with a 90Hz... Read more...
The OnePlus Buds were introduced roughly a year ago, and we were generally impressed with their audio performance and features, especially for the price. While these wireless earbuds didn't offer active noise cancellation like its pricier rivals, it was hard to argue with the $79 price tag. Now, it appears that OnePlus is looking to offer a more premium version of its wireless earbuds, and they are aptly called OnePlus Buds Pro. In addition, OnePlus' The Lab is currently accepting applications for testers for two products: the Nord 2 5G smartphone that we talked about earlier this week and the Buds Pro Edition. OnePlus doesn't give us any information on specifications for the Buds Pro, but you... Read more...
The OnePlus 8 is again on sale for those looking for [last year's] flagship performance at a reasonable price. The OnePlus 8 debuted initially with a $699 price tag, which has been on a steady decline ever since the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 9 family arrived. The phone is being sold directly from OnePlus today for $369 after applying a coupon at checkout (SUMMEROP8). Enter the code -- without the parentheses -- in the Voucher tab at checkout, which drops the price from $399 to $369. This isn't the lowest price we've seen for the phone -- it hit $349 during Prime Day -- but Amazon is currently selling the device at $460.14. So, this is the current low for the smartphone. OnePlus' behavior with its smartphones running OxygenOS came under scrutiny earlier this week. According to a new report, the company's flagship OnePlus 9 Pro has its performance throttled – on purpose – in hundreds of popular Android apps. AnandTech performed an exhaustive investigation into the throttling behavior on the OnePlus 9 and found that OxygenOS – OnePlus's flavor of Android 11 – includes a special blacklist of apps that are forbidden from using its fastest "Prime" core or can only use it with a much lower clock speed. As a result, performance takes a noticeable nosedive on the OnePlus 9 Pro compared to other flagship Android devices using the Qualcomm Snapdragon... Read more...
No longer a rumor, OnePlus has confirmed it is launching a Nord 2 smartphone with 5G connectivity, though it will not be rocking a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset like the first iteration. Instead, this will be the first OnePlus device to feature a MediaTek system-on-chip (SoC). Perhaps equally surprising, OnePlus is billing the MediaTek-powered Nord 2 as a "flagship killer." We have seen that designation from OnePlus before, though it was in the company's earlier days when it aggressively sought to shake up the smartphone landscape. The OnePlus 2 was deemed such a phone—a flagship killer with premium features and high-end capabilities, at a delightfully much lower price than what a typical... Read more...
At present, OnePlus is a company best known for its smartphones, and to a lesser extent, its wireless earbuds and smart televisions (in certain markets). However, a new trademark filing shows that OnePlus might be looking to expand into a segment that many Android makers have long abandoned: tablets. This information comes to us from a listing with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Not much can be gleaned from the listing other than the fact that the new device is called the OnePlus Pad. The name would lead us to believe that OnePlus wants to establish itself in the market that the Apple iPad dominates. There are other competitors in this segment, including Amazon with... When it comes to flagship smartphones sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, the OnePlus 9 is among the cheapest available. The smartphone has a suggested retail price of $729 versus $799 for the Samsung Galaxy S21. While the Galaxy S21 is frequently on sale (often at $699, as is the case currently at Amazon), the OnePlus 9 hasn't been so lucky. However, things are changing today since multiple stores presently carry the OnePlus 9 with an $80 discount, bringing its price down to just $649. That's bargain-basement pricing for a Snapdragon 888 smartphone and might just be enough to persuade some customers that have been sitting on the sidelines to jump in the game. If you’re looking for a 5G smartphone that has stellar performance for not a lot of money, you’ll want to jet over to Amazon… immediately. Prime Day discounts have been showering down on us all day, but this latest deal on last year’s OnePlus 8 5G is almost too good to ignore. The original MSRP for the OnePlus 8 5G was $699 when it debuted during the first half of 2020 (as the COVID-19 pandemic was kicking into high gear), but today it’s on sale for 50 percent off at Amazon. However, we must caution that this deal is only available for Amazon Prime subscribers, but these days, it seems as though the “Prime” bug has bitten most everyone. That means your... Read more...
Last summer we reviewed the eponymous OnePlus Nord, and came away impressed. It never made it to North America, but its successor -- the $300 OnePlus Nord N10 5G -- did, and while the price was on point, we found that it simply cut too many corners to really hit the sweet spot. Most importantly, it seemed to lack that signature combination of OnePlus design and performance magic and the company's special attention to detail. We were somewhat disappointed, but it still flew off the shelves. Enter the $240 OnePlus Nord N200 5G, an attractive looking Snapdragon 480-equipped 5G phone which brings OnePlus even closer to budget territory. We just spent a few days testing it, and while the lower price... Read more...
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are currently the flagships of OnePlus' smartphone family and come packing the mighty Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. However, the OnePlus 9 starts at $729, while the OnePlus 9 Pro is squarely in rarified air with a starting price of $1,069 in its 12GB/256GB configuration. For those that still want a lot of flagship-worthy performance without breaking the back, OnePlus is currently offering a $200 discount on its popular flagship from last year: the OnePlus 8T. The phone carries an MSRP of $749, but today's deal brings it down to a more palatable $549. This pricing applies to both the Aquamarine Green and Lunar Silver edition of the OnePlus 8T. Last month, OnePlus launched its OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro flagships, which we recently reviewed. At the same time, it also announced the OnePlus 9R (a reworked Snapdragon 870-equipped OnePlus 8T for India and China) and the $159 OnePlus Watch. This didn’t come as much of a surprise considering rumors of a OnePlus smartwatch have been swirling for years. It even looks similar to the Watch RX that its partner company Oppo teased last year. Before we dive into reviewing the OnePlus Watch, we have to set clear expectations. This device doesn’t compete directly with the Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Fitbit, and Wear OS smartwatches. It’s in a category of wearables that look like watches... Read more...
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro were first announced just over a week ago, and we followed up with our review of both smartphones. Today, however, marks the flagship Snapdragon 888 devices' official launch, and here's where you can purchase them in both unlocked and carrier-locked form. You can get the base OnePlus 9 unlocked direct from OnePlus, or you can choose to go with Amazon or Best Buy. Amazon only offers the OnePlus 9 in Winter Mist, while both OnePlus and Best Buy offer Winter Mist and Astral Black. The price at each store is $729.99, which is value-priced for a Snapdragon 888-powered flagship smartphone. OnePlus 9 $729.99 8GB RAM 128GB Unlocked @ Amazon OnePlus 9 $729.99 8GB RAM 128GB... When the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro were first announced last week, it was confirmed that the smartphones would support 4G LTE across all three major U.S. networks: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. However, when it came to 5G support, things were definitely more limited. When announced, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro only supported 5G connectivity on T-Mobile. At the time, OnePlus said that 5G support on Verizon's wireless network would be coming at a later date. Well, Verizon announced late last week that both smartphones are now certified to work on its "Nationwide 5G" network. Nationwide 5G in Verizon parlance refers to its sub-6GHz 5G network, in case you were wondering. Since I’m... Read more...
OnePlus is very late to the smartwatch game, but the company is looking to hit its competitors where it matters regarding features and pricing. The new OnePlus Watch looks to be a compelling entry with a 46mm casing and a 1.39-inch circular OLED display (326 ppi). One important thing to mention about the display is that it is covered not with Gorilla Glass but with highly scratch-resistant sapphire glass.  Although OnePlus isn't disclosing what SoC is inside its new smartwatch, it will come with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Likewise, there's requisite Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS support built-in. One thing that you won't find -- at least not with the first generation of... Read more...
